I was raised next door to a PA Durch family (not Mennonite or Amish but lifestyle) She made everything from scratch and she swore I could tell from a 1/4 mile away when she opened the Hoosier cabinet to bake bread or make noodles. She would dump about (guessing here ) 5 lbs of flour on her kitchen table (enamel topped) make a well in the middle and have no idea how many eggs went in the middle. I would sit at one of the chairs on my knees to watch. She made squares for the biggest pot of Slippery Pot Pie you've ever seen. That meant the their preacher would be coming that Sunday after church and I was invited also. Homemade bread and home grown green beans. I loved her so much, she was the only adult who made me feel like I was loved.

@@HazelJuanitaMillanHoffman Actually I can go back about 3 generations of her family and they were all Church of God. Kind of sad - her niece that I played with died this week and it leaves only one of Melva's family left the youngest niece. I will say the boy I dated in high school was Brethern, his mother wore the little cap. She didn't like me because (or I thought so) was an Episcopalian. As hard as I worked on that farm for them - I couldn't win her over.

I was lucky enough to be invited to my Amish friends quilting (I just visited with the ladies while they quilted). The younger girls don't enjoy quilting, so they were put to work making noodles. They used 96 egg yolks and I don't know how much flour, but their process was just like yours including the ironing of the dough - which was new to me. It was a wonderful, relaxing day filled with visiting and sharing of stories and I enjoyed it so much. My friend ended up with two and a half five gallon buckets of dried noodles and I came home with a full cookie sheet of noodles which I finished drying. Memories to treasure. Thanks so much for sharing!

I’ve made noodles before, but I never heard of ironing them! I grew up in a community with a lot of Holdemann Mennonite people, so I wonder if it’s part of their tradition. I don’t have a pasta machine, so I roll my noodles out by hand, and cut them with a large chef’s knife. I also use the same dough to make egg roll wrappers, and have even made fried hand pies with it!
I enjoyed watching the boys’ antics, especially the flour facial hair! I love Hadassah’s name. I wish the book of Esther had been named Hadassah instead, since that was her real name! I hope your Hadassah is as courageous and steadfast as her namesake!

The chicken tasted like chicken (not cardboard) and the noodles were amazing with just enough flour from the noodles to thicken the soup perfectly! Oh and the home-made hot bread fresh from my Grandmother’s oven - she cut off one end & slathered it with butter & honey for me… oh gosh… now I’m hungry & lonely!

Luckily, homemade play dough is fron ingredients found in the cupboard, just like making dough, so no issue, just food coloring added, and cream of tar tar I believe. Yes:
      1 cup all-purpose flour
      1 cup water
      2 teaspoons cream of tartar
      1/3 cup salt
      1 tablespoon vegetable oil
      food coloring
My mom would let us each pick our color. On rainy days It kept the 5 of us busy... loved those days with warm soft playdough...

Liked your term "harvested" no explanation needed. I grew up on what would be called today as farmette. Parents were both brought up on farms (dairy). My mom was raised Mennonite, Pennsylvania Dutch, not related to amish or old order as yourself. Dad was first German generation born in the United States. Parents had chickens and harvested them too. Lots of crops, regular garden and a patch garden that was near the house. Fruit trees... many different types of apples, pears, peaches, plums. Blueberries and raspberries. Nut trees pecan, almond and hazelnut. Lots of canning and freezing. Myself and siblings were all expected to pull the weeds. Truly nice to see you bringing up your children with establishing skills to provide for themselves and generosity to share with others. I truly wish I could have brought my own up as I myself was. Too many of us just take it all for granted, never feeling that accomplishment.

No better legacy could you leave them with. I truly enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing ❤

Wow that’s a cool tip with ironing the dough! I never knew that it needed to dry first before being cut. Always thought it was such a pain to make because of the cutting process and how sticky it would get. I’ll have to give it a try and fry it out first. ❤

Thanks for sharing this. I love how you get your littles involved in the prep and preparing of food. Love the kiddos antics with the flour and I see my boys aren't the only ones who can't keep their hands out of bowl of flour...lol. Another thing, Playdough in the pasta roller/cutter. I thought my pasta cutter was the only one that has had playdough crusted into it until the next round of noodles went through. Thank you for sharing real life and not editing those things out.
