The main reason why the PS2 Ratchet Games are difficult to emulate is due to the fact they use a a higher render distance and a form of mipmapping that is harder to emulate on modern hardware, Size Matters didn't do this due to being on PSP and Insomniac not working on it so it was consiterably easier to emulate.
They're also abundant with low-level tricks and optimizations to squeeze every last inch of power out of the PS2. Formatting the disks of Up Your Arsenal required a ton of trial-and-error, trying out all sorts of positions for where the data physically was on the disk, just so they could swap textures on the Tyhrranoids the moment Dr. Nefarious set off the Biobliterator, or utilizing a security vulnerability on the EULA screen to include patches _on a PS2 game._ Now, take these low-level tricks, all designed around the PS2, and then try to run it on a system that _wasn't_ a PS2. Kinda tough!
Yet all three of the games are on PS Vita. Modern Hardware is sad. Publisher and Devs only want maximum profit with minimum effort. They are lazy and greedy nowadays.
You may not know this, but when you buy a classic, you also get all versions of the game too. By changing your console language, you will have access to that version of the game. So for example, if you change your console language to Japanese, you will get access to the Japanese version of Sly and Size Matters. Important to specify also, that if the title has PAL/NTSC swapping via emu menu, then you need to change that in the emu settings itself to access the correct version after changing the language. This is why all classics seem to have large file sizes. It's simply because they come with all versions. So for example, for Sly, changing your language to say... French, it won't change Sly to the PAL version because it has the NTSC/PAL swapping, but it will change the Sly console icon to the PAL art. But then in the case of Ratchet, since it doesnt have that swapping in the emu menu, the game's played version is dictated by the language setting on the console

Having played most of the R&C games now, it'll be interesting to see what my thoughts on Size Matters will be. I've watched all the cutscenes of Size Matters but I never played it, but I can say the lack of the one cutscene missing from the Ps2 version doesn't really impact the story at all, in that cutscene Qwark is about to tell the duo who his "father" is and Ratchet cuts him off and leaves before he can tell them anything, the scene is also brief; only lasting 25 seconds so Ps2 players aren't missing anything at all for not playing the PSP version. Been wanting that Daxter PSP game for a long time now, but never had a PSP to get it, so it's nice that's available on modern systems, it's the one Jak and Daxter game I don't have in my collection and I'm looking forward to getting that when I can.

It doesn't suck, the problem is that you're playing it through modern lenses. I hate that whole "rose tinted glasses" thing. @@dapperfan44 It was decent at the time, but the awful camera controls and short length with no new game plus made me much prefer the previous four games, Deadlocked included. They're probably taking so long with Ratchet because they finally want to release a version of Deadlocked that doesn't have the camera clip into Ratchet's head in the very first cutscenes.

One major loss from porting the PSP version over PS2 is multiplayer. Both the PSP and PS2 versions of Size Matters have multiplayer, with PSP even having online. Unfortunately, PSP games on PS4/5 patch out all multiplayer modes.
One thing I would like to point out that was not mentioned is the fact that you didn't mention any of the PS4 exclusive issues relating to these releases. Sly Cooper on PS4 suffers from the game running at 1.2x speed due to a compatibility issue relating to Sony's emulator on PS4 that they claim that they are addressing which caused sly to suffer from some rendering issues and introducing some bugs not present on prior releases, and PSP titles like Daxter and R&C Size Matters suffer from desynchronization issues relating to the PS4 version of that emulator and causing audio to desynchronize and glitch out during pre-rendered cutscenes and general gameplay with audio typically lagging just enough to be noticeable during gameplay and quite a bit during cutscenes. You should probably review both versions of these types of titles going forward to help illustrate these emulator issues as they do exist and Sony doesn't seem to be doing much about them yet (aside from Sly PS4 getting a 200 mb patch and Daxter getting a 170 mb patch, both of which didn't seem to fix anything).
1:58 probably speedrunners? I know collision changed on some things between versions and so some glitches aren't possible anymore. For example, when you Hyper Strike with the Shock Crystal armor set, it creates a crystal sticking out of the ground. You can stand on this on PSP, but not PS2.
The PS5 version of this game has definitely improved things...only because of the rewind feature. The game still isn't all that good. I think it's almost good at best and just quite frustrating at worst. I've played worse games, but (to put it nicely) this is definitely one of the weakest Ratchet & Clank games.
only way to get ratchet and clank emulation working at least around 60fps is to use the latest nightly build of PCSX2 and even then I only checked the original game I dont even know if the others are gonna run as good as it does, really hope they somehow manage to put it on PS+
Got a 1660ti and a ryzen 5 5600x can handle any ps2 games I throw at it and can almost emulate rpcs3 ratchet games with some slowdown, the new zen 5 CPU'S are better equipped to handle ps3 emulation
different file size (this is babble for a lot, but I thought I would say it): Ps5 has kraken compression. It also has a dedicated chip that can decompress the data while it's being read from the SSD so the APU (CPU + GPU) doesn't have to waste resources decompressing it. The PS4 doesn't have a dedicated chip to handle this type of decompression, so the actual APU would have to do it, but that would use resources and make the system slower and not be able to run games as smoothly.
@@LasagaMan More like it has a special minibrain that can focus on unzipping while the other brains focus on big boy stuff. Or maybe it runs paid WinRar, who knows the power that contains
Not gonna lie, I don’t care which version of these trilogies gets the port, as long as it’s functional And like you said, if they do it with the ps3 versions then they could just as easily make the entire ratchet and clank series accessible on modern consoles (which following how rift apart went and the fact it was made at all I’d say is worth it)
So far i played almost all Ratchet and clanks and i did the platinum trophys on oll of them if possible. I never had an psp so i missed out on Size matters. You made me not even gonna tr it now that i could lol
If you're into PlayStation emulation just stick with PPSSPP & PCSX2 far better visuals and accessibility. and for size matters I'd choose the PS2 version as it has a more zoomed out FOV and it also utilizes the right anolog stick. The PSP version has better audio quality during it's cutscenes and the loading screens are better as well as the extra cutscene but I'd stick with the PS2 version as size matters in challenge mode is hard AF and with the more zoomed out FOV and extra anolog stick on the PS2 makes playing this game more controllable and easier. Plus the texture quality is a bit better on the PS2 port and it also has DualShock 2 support.
Yeah those bosses are cheap. The PS2 Ratchet and Clank games always had a bit of a tendency for enemies and bosses to track your movement but it is on full display with Luna and Otto holy shit. After several tries against the latter I found that he couldn't really even touch me if I circled on the outside of the arena. He is a massive sponge though, you will run out of bullets in the middle of fighting him. The Agents of Doom kind of helped with his shield phases. Thank god for the PDA. I think the reason the difficulty spikes so suddenly at the end is due to how condensed it is as a PSP game. Never played Secret Agent Clank but I will have to for that full series platinum trophy I have going right now.
I don't know why Sony just don't use a modified PC emulator for PS2 and PS3 games and boost all games to either 1440p or 1080p. For stability - would make sense. If a RTX 3050 can run theses games in 4K and a PS5 is equal to a RTX 4070TI. What is the problem?
I don't subscribe to premium and probably never will... but I appreciate these re-releases honouring previous purchases where applicable. I bought this and Daxter digitally years ago, so it's nice that I can replay them again this way.

I'd say this is now the best Ratchet game available on modern hardware. The story, side activities, and levels are much more than you make them out to be, more than enough to make up for the rough difficulty balancing. Had way more of a blast running through this again than Rift Apart back when it came out.
@@Jdb63 I genuinely do not get the appeal of the future games when it comes to anything besides the gameplay. I know this is TECHNICALLY not the same thing, rather it's the general topic of these PSP ports, but I find it REALLY funny how the lost frontier, a game which people don't know exists or absolutely despise, got a port RIGHT BEFORE Daxter. Like Daxter is neat, the only reason less people played it was exactly because it never got a PS2 port back in the day, so I find it funny how they ported even the bottom of the barrel of Jak games before it. Quite odd how they decided to do that now as well, considering the honestly absurd mediocrity of Jak ports since the PS4. Like the whole "just dump an emulator and upload it to the store" mentality really seems negligent when there was an actual port for the PS3 (also the basis for the hilariously shit Vita release), and the OpenGOAL project has essentially made even that obsolete (i.e. it's the only port with true widescreen, not to mention just an absolute technical marvel). I might just be cynical when it comes to rereleases in general, honestly, at some point it gets a little petty.
I have Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction and A Crack In Time on digital PS3. But I wish they were ported to PS5 as a Remaster. What do you think?
the thing i don't like in this game is the camera, i feel it's way to close to ratchet? now i will say it's been a long time that i played the og versions so don't know if that's how it always was.
Considering emulators are legally considered competition, I rather they try to one up them by making actual remasters and ports. Since if it's literally just PCSX2, why not just sell us the iso and allow us to use it? Yknow...like how a product should be sold? The digital era has REALLY made us forget what ownership is.

Im a huge jak fan but daxter was just boring. Even lost frontier is more interesting than this game.
@@Sneaky_racoon_sly I don't know if interesting is the right word to describe The Lost Frontier (TLF had a Ps2 port which is how I played it), I liked that game as a kid but nowadays I think it's mediocre, but that's just me personally, if anyone loves The Lost Frontier then more power to them.
@@TheMasterJay nobody loves the lost frontier even i dont but daxter was just so mid and boring that i take a slightly shitty game any day than a game that makes me sleep
Also the ps2 version has more skins
PS2 Size Matters is the second R&C game I played after the first one, and was my favorite for a super long time. I was surprised when I learned that most people hated it lmao
the only ratched and clank game I've played, and I played it through atleast 10 times no kidding, I loved it.
Take a shot everytime J makes a video about a game that’s titled: “Does X Suck?! Well..” because these review are GUARANTEED to say that the game indeed sucks or not good. Easiest way to avoid these reviews
Lol
even if i disagree with people’s opinions i like hearing them, i dunno it can be neat hearing where other people’s thoughts on something come from
i wouldn’t say you should definitely avoid these or anything
@@swr.nezumi he was right on the money tho, the video was worthless as his opinions didnt change, he coulda ended it at the save state bonus feature, then the rest of the video was whining about subjective skill issues
not true, sly 1 also had "well..." in the title
"easiest way to avoid these reviews" he says as he actively doesn't listen to his own advice and in fact chooses to engage with the review anyways
I love when they upscale PSP games to look nicer on TV displays. I especially like it when they utilize the right stick for the camera whenever possible.
Does anyone else do the thing where you buy the game first and then watch the video later?😂
But it's free
@@TheGingiGamer for you maybe
@@slayerBO2EPC You had to pay for it? I'm not even a PS Plus member and it was free for me. Is it a region thing?
4:42 thx so much for showing psp images
I loved secret agent clank as a kid I don’t understand the hate it gets it even holds up today and I still enjoy it on my psp from time to time
I don't care what anyone says, I thoroughly loved this game in all 3 of my playthroughs
Ngl I LOVE remasters like this just upscale the game to run comfortably at 4k 60fps and put it out! ❤❤❤
They couldn't have ported Ratchet and Clank 2,3, or 4 on here?
Man, Ratchet 4 is exactly what Ratchet ? :D
@@Michalus-iu7sg Ratchet Deadlocked
imagine thinking size matters sucks
Bro, you are breaking my heart, I loved this game as a kid and coming back to it as an Adult made me realise how much it sucked.
It doesn't suck, the problem is that you're playing it through modern lenses. I hate that whole "rose tinted glasses" thing. Even if the game isn't good to you anymore, it was a good game at the time. Everything seems good when it's new. The flaws are only exposed with age and improvements in other products.
@@dapperfan44
It was decent at the time, but the awful camera controls and short length with no new game plus made me much prefer the previous four games, Deadlocked included. Just felt like a filler game. One of the more skippable entries. And I get it, a smaller game on a handheld, but I cannot fucking stand how spongy the enemies are with the weakest weapons and it makes the final boss a pain in the fucking ass. It felt more like an endurance round rather than a climactic showdown
It was the weakest Ratchet and Clank game at the time and it hasnt aged the best so.... meh 🤷♂️
it doesn't suck, this guy sucks.
Daxter and size matters were my first and fav games on the psp, cant wait to buy it
They're probably taking so long with Ratchet because they finally want to release a version of Deadlocked that doesn't have the camera clip into Ratchet's head in the very first cutscenes.
I never had a ps3, but I bought a ps4 in 2015 when the ratchet 2016 was announced. I was sure they’d release all the ps2/3 games one day and I used to check the classic catalogue every week when I got home from school. Now I’m in my late 20s and can’t believe they released my least favourite one first…
Appreciate them for giving this trophy support
Size matters will always be one of my favorite games just for it getting me into PlayStation
This was my first ratchet and clank game I ever played I miss the PSP days
One major loss from porting the PSP version over PS2 is multiplayer. Both the PSP and PS2 versions of Size Matters have multiplayer, with PSP even having online. Unfortunately, PSP games on PS4/5 patch out all multiplayer modes.
Ps2 actually had atmosphere and was more than 180p 15fps, kinda sad with how it looks significantly more empty abd dull
When this game got announced I was really excited because It needs the savestates. I hope jak 2 gets a relaunch.
Ratchets head is way bigger as i remember
No idea what Sonic project you are talking about, but seeing as Sonic is my Sly Cooper, my ears perked up when you said that 🤣😂🤣. Love your content!
This game it’s alright short game but the ryno fucking 999900 bolts OMG the trophy list it’s not bad
Speak for yourself, Secret Agent Clank is awesome. Super excited to play that one again.
All i want is the FUTURE GAMES
I already shelled out 54 dollars for the Og trilogy on ps3
J's Reviews coming back talk about Size Matters again: "Aw shit.. here we go again."
different file size (this is babble for a lot, but I thought I would say it): Ps5 has kraken compression. It also has a dedicated chip that can decompress the data while it's being read from the SSD so the APU (CPU + GPU) doesn't have to waste resources decompressing it. The PS4 doesn't have a dedicated chip to handle this type of decompression, so the actual APU would have to do it, but that would use resources and make the system slower and not be able to run games as smoothly.
ps5 can compress more because it has a fancy chip that runs winzip really fast
@@MisterPuggles so you're saying It runs Winzip as opposed to WinRar or 7Zip?
@@LasagaMan More like it has a special minibrain that can focus on unzipping while the other brains focus on big boy stuff. Or maybe it runs paid WinRar, who knows the power that contains
I'm always going to enjoy Ratchet and Clank so Size Matters is instant buy for me, especially with up-rendering, rewind, and trophies
Imagine if they added Secret Agent Clank with the platinum trophy requirement of getting all the skill points 😆
Not gonna lie, I don’t care which version of these trilogies gets the port, as long as it’s functional
And like you said, if they do it with the ps3 versions then they could just as easily make the entire ratchet and clank series accessible on modern consoles (which following how rift apart went and the fact it was made at all I’d say is worth it)
Size Matters was my first Ratchet and Clank game on the PSP. Jak and Daxter the Lost Frontier was a game only played the demo
Honestly just want the OG trilogy, those games where crazy good
Looking forward to finding out what that Sonic project is about
So far i played almost all Ratchet and clanks and i did the platinum trophys on oll of them if possible.
I never had an psp so i missed out on Size matters.
You made me not even gonna tr it now that i could lol
As a die-hard ratchet fan I am absolutely playing this on the ps2 again
Oooh hang on, if I can buy this and keep it without needing PS plus I'm getting it as soon as possible. I had this on PSP as a kid and loved it.
Have a platinum in them all, not including PSP, will probably give this one a whirl. Never played them before 2012.
I really loved size matters, it got me into the series tbh😭
0:45 Actually they had almost everything from deadlocked to into the nexus.
5gb is "large" 😂😂😂 what's "small" 100kb?
UMD discs could only hold 1.3gb of data
I don't know why Sony just don't use a modified PC emulator for PS2 and PS3 games and boost all games to either 1440p or 1080p. For stability - would make sense. If a RTX 3050 can run theses games in 4K and a PS5 is equal to a RTX 4070TI. What is the problem?
Hell no, that game just isn't that good at all.
I don’t see the hate for secret agent clank or size matters, i enjoyed them both they are really fun platfromers for the psp back then
[Cue pictures of J huging akwardly High Impact Games, or Sanzaroo]
I don't subscribe to premium and probably never will... but I appreciate these re-releases honouring previous purchases where applicable. I bought this and Daxter digitally years ago, so it's nice that I can replay them again this way.
You can just buy the games outright. You don't need Premium.
@@WllKiedSnake Yeah I know, that's what I was getting at. It's why I've ended up with it for free from my previous purchase from years ago.
I recently purchased Sly Cooper too 👍
@Petronious When PS3 emulation comes along I'm gonna get so many free games. I own a lot of digital PS3 games. I have a lot of PS1,PS2 and PSP games digital also, so have been getting a few of the PS classics for free. I bought Sly Racoon also. It's recent patch improved image quality. Same for Tomb Raider Legends. They both look 986p now.
Would have liked it if they fixed the framerate and speed so it could work at 60fps but I guess that is too much effort for what this is.
Sly 2 might release on September 14 because its gonna be the 20th anniversary of the game
I'd say this is now the best Ratchet game available on modern hardware. The story, side activities, and levels are much more than you make them out to be, more than enough to make up for the rough difficulty balancing. Had way more of a blast running through this again than Rift Apart back when it came out.
Old classic Ratchet just can't be beat. They don't even feel like the same characters in the newer games
@@Jdb63 Hard agree!
@@Jdb63 I genuinely do not get the appeal of the future games when it comes to anything besides the gameplay. I mean it feels less bad knowing Deadlocked wraps up the entire thematic plot of the series, but it IS pretty silly how after Deadlocked the series basically became the subject of it's own previous mockery.
Also the insane mental gymnastics done to avoid Angela...existing.
@@Screedawg77size matters had thé best story in thé whole séries in my opinion
Never cared about this specific game, and I'm still waiting for official PC ports of the mainline series to show up. Emulators just feel so... *wrong.*
Great video 🎉
This might be a dumb question, but why are comments disabled on some of your older videos like “Quest for Booty” ? I picked up the game recently and remembered you did a video on it. I started watching it and noticed the comment section is disabled.
There sure are a lot of positive fans on Twitter.
I just desperately desire the PS3 Games since a PS2 is atleast cheap and lacks a CMOS Glitch
I noticed that they have jak&daxter precusor legacey i think that i'll buy that and sly cooper and is daxter any good?
Loved the game so much - also favourite game series
I am having trouble with the controls, and I have no idea how to do a long jump... the game is also zoomed in, and the camera is all over the place...
It can’t be that hard for the PS2 games to be emulated, given that a Xbox Series S emulates the game in 1440p 60fps
If you own them digital on PS3 and they get added to PS5. Then you should just get them for free.
the thing i don't like in this game is the camera, i feel it's way to close to ratchet? now i will say it's been a long time that i played the og versions so don't know if that's how it always was.
Ngl they should have released Up Your Arsenal or Deadlocked since those were my favorites growing up 😢
what were they thinking
This game is my childhood
I wish these companies would just license the actually good emulators like PCSX2 and RPCS3.
Considering emulators are legally considered competition, I rather they try to one up them by making actual remasters and ports.
Since if it's literally just PCSX2, why not just sell us the iso and allow us to use it? Yknow...like how a product should be sold? The digital era has REALLY made us forget what ownership is.
better controls and a few neat settings here and there doesn't fix all the other game's problems
exactly
Skill issue
But it does help.
I actually had fun, i rember the game to be really hard but it only died like 6 times it was fine exept the clank sections wich are too numerous.
