7:57-8:05 I can tell what game series you've been replaying as of late. Also, it's funny how you bring up your own history with the game, but completely neglect the RoR episode you did with Exo.
@@dakotaisgreat Given it's not on the same hardware (SNES instead of PS1 & Saturn) that probably wouldn't make sense. Honestly neither would have 8.5, which would have fallen into the same "sequel on lower hardware" hole that the video mentioned.
As a kid I always dreamed of playing as Bass in MM8 with his moveset from this game. He would likely be beyond broken, and it would be very difficult to program even now, but still.
Mega Man & Bass being on the SNES is fitting considering Mega Man is known for pleasing an audience of people who are were too poor to get the new console or had it as a hand-me-down with high quality games. One thing I like about the Mega Man games is how they help the little guy
This is one of the best megaman games and freaking nes ugly fans can shove it. Megaman 7 with 8 sprite rom hack, megaman and bass and megaman 8 are the best classic megaman games period and nes megaman sucks!
@@dominosnostradamus2415that has nothing to do with what I said. I haven’t even played Mega Man & Bass, so I can’t even speak on it’s quality However, the 3 or 4 of the NES games are better than Mega Man 8, sorry dude.
Not a bad review, but you forgot to mention one thing: There's a database of robot masters that can be filled out by collecting discs from the 8 stages as both Mega Man and Bass. It features all robot masters from Mega Man 1 to this game, and includes the Genesis unit, Stardroids and Mega Man killers. It just shows blurbs and facts about them like like Burst Man hating parties. Things like that.
It even has pretty cool things like how it says Dr Light enjoys the Internet. Low and behold, the Battle Network timeline sees Dr Light having his desire to focus on Internet expansions approved rather than robotics.
Probably because the database while a cool idea, is kinda underwhelming. While the collection of characters throughout the main games and spinoffs is cool and has some decent info on the characters though I will say some things are odd like some of their likes and dislikes (also Dr. Light is "Douchie") and characters like Dr. Cossack didn't get a bio. But I can't hate on it compared to some of the challenges to acquiring the discs like in the final Mole sequence in Ground Man's stage or trying to get Quick Man's disc.
@@shanegiorgio4713 I'm aware it's some kind of mistranslation or something buuut it's in the game so Thomas Light is a Douche confirmed. Starting to think Albert Wily was about as right as Magneto was with humanity. LOL
@@dnmstarsi maybe after the board of directors from the backstory cutscene in Mega Man 11 approved Light's work over Wily's, Light tried to console Wily about the situation but he came off as kinda rude and thus the series we know came to be.
One detail I really like about this game's intro stage is that since it's the robot museum, the level is made up of homages to older robot master stages. (The fireballs from Fire Man's stage, the drills from Metal Man's stage, the rain from Toad Man's stage, and the rising ship from Blizzard Man's stage.)
I appreciate the thought of Inafune making the game meant for kids with an outdated console tough as nails. That way they'd be able to spend more time on it.
THIS GUY GETS IT. Accounting for inflation, SNES games were around $120 each. We got 2-3 games a year if we were lucky. So a game that can be beaten in a weekend, or even a week, was a rental game. That's why older gamers prefer harder games.. they were the ones we actually could chew on for weeks or months on end.
@@NetBattler I'd settle for more Mega Man in general, even if they keep up the constant asset re-use... Anything to get the series back up and running...
My favorite factoid about this game is that it's the closest the Capcom crew worked with the tie-in mangaka of the various Mega Man magna imprints. Hitoshi Ariga, the mangaka for Megamix not only did promo art for the game, but designed Burnerman and Dynamo Man Koji Izuki, who penned the MM8 and MM&B manga, designed Coldman and Pirateman Iwamoto Yoshihiro, the man behind the X series manga, designed Groundman and Magicman.
Funny story I played the GBA version of this game back in highschool on an emulator that somehow wasn't blocked by the school, back then I still didn't know it was the hardest Megaman and just thought all Megaman games were just that way. I got up to about King stage 1 or 2 and then played some other Megaman games, and then found out about this games reputation, I played the SNES version as both characters, beat it and enjoyed it. This game was advanced Megaman training for me in a way, as it made every other game easier
i still feel like the really hard parts of the game are the final stage. but overall, most of the stages are not that much more than other games in the franchise. 1 has ALOT of bullshitery as well. and its also fair to point out that the weapons in M&B are far more usable than most other megaman games, specially something like 5, which has the worst selection by far.
@@marcosdheleno Everything except for the final stage(s) is really not that bad, especially as Bass. Idk why everyone is calling it the "hardest Mega Man game" or anything like that. I remember other Mega Man games being way harder. But yeah the King's Fortress stages suck asssssssssss.
25:36 you're not screwed as megaman, you have to use the lightning attack to stay in midair and potentially save yourself with a different platform, i've done it a few times and it feels awesome and once again another clever way of using your tools
Yeah, i basically figured that out on my own and basjcally ended up using different wepons depending on the attack he was using. Also when using lightning before he launches the attack it destroys the hand from even touching the platform.
You can slide over the platform gaps too, this helps close the distance before the platform gets destroyed. Ice wall can be jumped off of mid-air if you're out of lightning, but the timing is strict Kind of like Mega ball in 8
Yeah I also found out by accident when I ran out of Copy Vision and Spread Drill (my go to weapons for the boss) and just testing what other weapons worked
As a matter of fact I knew he's enjoyed this game for years ever since his combined review of it with Exo on the latter's channel (Remake or Rebreak Mega Man & Bass)
It was this gameboy game’s cartridge that fell under my car seat and couldn’t find until we slid the seat forward and accidentally crushed it. It was unplayable until my dad took the time to open it up and took apart the cartridge and then FIXED IT. Cartridge looked rough and the art sticker was gone but it worked again! Thank you, dad! Also, this game kicked my @$$. But I sunk so many hours looking through the gallery section and art. Love this game. Always chose Bass cuz I needed that sweet double jump and directional aim.
Well you're not going to find it in this game. Which is the major problem with it, if you ask me. If they had just added E-tanks, I don't think it would be thought of so negatively.
It's funny to think back on how retro gaming used to say any classic MM games beyond 3 were bad because the difficulty was dumbed down and the games themselves became formulaic and predictable, so here's a game that kind of addresses that reputation as a whole, and now it gets called bad because it is somehow _too_ difficult and _too_ different.
The franchise has a long history going back and forth about difficulty. The most blatant moment was probably after the mid 90s from MM8 to MM&B, and MMX4 to X5 to X6. MMZ and MMBN also had that back and forth but kind of more subtle.
I really like that speech you did in the end. It's true that you can sometimes enjoy things that are widely considered "bad" and you may not like things that are considered to be "good". And that's ok. It's always a good idea to try things for yourself if they seem interesting to you. It took me a while to learn that, as I was a lot into online reviewers and took their word as gospel for a long time.
Yeah, I had to come to terms with that too. I enjoy stuff like Sonic Origins despite that collection having a lot of issues, and for other games like Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, I understand why people love it and at one point I loved playing Lego Star Wars 2. But nowadays, it just doesn't click with me. But if other people legitimately enjoy it to this day, then I'm happy for them.
@@DADA-yt1pt Complete Saga I have plenty of nostalgia for (mostly coming from the DS version), but, seeing as Skywalker Saga essentially improves upon in every aspect, I get why it wouldn't click for players today. And, also, for as limiting as the Star Engine's physics can be at times, and, while I think the last 3 Sonic 3 Zones should've just used the actual demos instead of remixed ones that sound remarkably inferior (or, the best case scenario, SEGA could've made an agreement with the Jackson estate to use the tracks that appear in the final release of the original Sonic 3K as a toggle with the demos), Sonic Origins is a pretty good port of 3 pretty good remakes, while also finally being able to release Sonic 3K as it's *own* remake to give new players and chance to experience the Classic Tetralogy.
Yeah I agree I always wanted to play pizza tower as everyone said it was good and that stuff just to waste my money on a game that I consider to hate the player The thing I hate the most is when the game will massively punish the player for simple mistakes Looking at you oregano desert secret 1 entrance
i don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Akari Kaida is one of the composers for this game. she also worked on breath of fire 3 which also seems to have a jazz influence on the music. also my favorite megaman soundtrack, it's so unique and the chords are lovely.
I think one thing that deserves to be mentioned but wasn't was the CD collection. It's kind of a love letter to all megaman games before it. At the time of the game release, I don't know it there was any book published (in Japanese or in English) that was an encyclopedia of all the megaman bosses. It includes their personality, their likes and dislikes (no, seriously) and is nice to look through. And when I say all the megaman games, I mean it. It has art for all of them INCLUDING the GB games. I remember looking through them and going "Mars? Who the fuck is Mars?" It's also worth mentioning that, at the time of release (at least here in Taiwan) there was considerable hype around it. The reception here seems to be that it was a good game. I didn't even know people hated it. The last thing I want to mention is that, with the complaints about the weapon energy, that's mitigated by the damage absorber, the energy saver, and the auto recover (megaman only). The first will absorb damage as weapon energy, the second will lower the weapon cost and the last, while standing still, can recover your health. Combine all of these and you can refill our energy just be getting hit then waiting. I personally think this is why the game is so hard for many. Combined with needing patience, a lot of people, I think, didn't bother to replay the stages and/or farm for the upgrades. When you get them all, Megaman can be a beast.
This absolutely should have been included in the Mega Man Legacy Collection 2. It was referenced in MM9's ending! They already had a built-in SNES emulator, so it would have made perfect sense. I think the only reason it wasn't was because there was no official translation of it, aside from the GBA version which has some real problems.
I've always thought of the Mega Man series like this: Classic Mega Man was made for all ages but mostly for children with the way the art direction moved towards. Mega Man X was made for teens and adults with how serious the story is and even the art style that was used. Mega Man Legends was made so Capcom could jump on the hype train that was exploration games like Zelda and stuff. Mega Man Battle Network was made because card games like Yu Gi Oh or the Pokemon TCG had become popular and Capcom wanted to also cash in on that market but they wanted to bring their own spin to it. Mega Man Zero was made to follow up on the X story and to add a true Mega Man X style game experience to portable handhelds, as the Xtreme games on GBC were very hit or miss in comparison to the Mega Man GB experience . Mega Man ZX and Star Force exist, because the Battle Network and Zero series were fairly popular, and Capcom wanted to milk Mega Man dry by that point. Its crazy how much Capcom has been milking Mega Man since the 1980s, by basically releasing games at almost a non stop pace, considering the fact that they considered Megaman 1 a failure and didn't really believe in it, but after the devs dedication to make Mega Man 2 on their free time in between other projects paid off, because Mega Man 2 was very popular and successful, Capcom basically tried putting Mega Man everywhere, because even his spin offs series had spin offs, and they even followed the trend that Mario and Sonic were doing by basically making sports games like Mega Man soccer, or even the very clunky Mega Man Battle and Chase kart game. But somehow between all of that mess, Mega Man & Bass was made as a personal challenge from Inafume and his staff, to see who were the true Mega Man veterans, because unlike most of the other games, there is no hand holding whatsoever in this SNES game, and the only people that praise it are the ones who beat that challenge, very similar to how Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels in the US) was basically Nintendo's game to challenge the experts at playing Mario, and the people that call Mega Man & Bass a bad game just didn't fully experience it, and they just gave up after getting wrecked a couple of times, and that to me is just unfortunate because the game truly is a satisfying experience.
The franchise is totally saturated (well it already was by the 90s) and most importantly it lacks a proper vision of management for the future because the main devs had nothing in mind but milk it cheaply like you said, with zero creative energy. Then the market and the public changed and became more demanding and less tolerant about repetitive MM sequels at some point in the 90s. By that time the market was witnessing all franchises developing and going beyond, so it was harder to respect a game that is stuck to a formula invented in the Nes era and with very repetitive and frequent sequels. Not that MM needed to grow like Zelda, but sticking to the exact same Nes formula is quite debatable. But the dev team continued showing out of touch tendencies and never did anything to truly grow the franchise. Instead of start making a creative effort they decided to appeal with challenge. Like, MM&B as a kind of response to 8, and it was the same with X6 as a response to X5. Of course it wasn't going to work well... after all it's the same oversaturated and repetitive formula but clearly very challenge.
I can still remember when you and ExoParadigmGamer did a Remake or Rebreak on this game (can't believe it's been almost seven years ever since), and that video made me reflect on MM&B a lot. While I didn't hate the game like most people did then, I wasn't the biggest fan either, but after completing it with both characters with what you two showed, I started loving it, and even now, it's still my favourite in the classic series.
This video really comes full circle for me. I actually started watching ur content after the Remake or Rebreak video of EPG and yours, and seeing you actually cover Megaman and Bass is really poetic
Came back to this video worried it was footage that would be problematic this week (it isn't, not typing the E word out)... ... but man is awesome that you went and commissioned artwork from an artist and gave them a shoutout instead of the many other options on the table. Kudos for that level of integrity and community support.
Mega Man and Bass was the first Mega Man game I ever emulated as a kid. Hearing the music beats gave me such a wave of combined nostalgia and PTSD from this game XD. Glad to find someone who enjoys it as much as I do
This game is amazing but from my memory of last playing 20 years ago: Do NOT play as Bass first. I made that mistake, and consequently couldn’t play as Megaman. Going from a double jumping, multi-directional machine gun buster enjoyer, to a guy who shoots one shot at a time only left and right, I found trying to use Megaman without those extra features to be an absolute pain and very very clunky. Bass spoiled me with Chocolate Cake while Megaman was like chewing raw celery in comparison. You don’t have this issue playing as MM first because you don’t know any different. Bass is just that amazing.
I think there's something to be said for doing it first with Bass to learn how the bosses and levels work. It's kind of like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. If you beat the game with Maria first then you get a heads up on the levels and boss battles for when you tackle the game a second time as Richter.
This is game is in no way a bad game . Never listen to the mass and try things for yourself . I’m an og blue bomber fan and Rockman & bass always been one of the best out there . Every Megaman head wanted to play as bass back then .
@@dsshocktrooper7523 it's a downgrade from the snes one in every way. If you can play the snes version there's no reason why you'd choose a dogcrap port

5:50 I beat the game on GBA and personally the screen crunch wasn’t that big of an issue for me, but it was still definitely annoying in some parts and there were a couple of times where it caused a bit of frustration
fun fact, J: if you shoot the copy vision at veeeery top of dynamo man's boss room when he does his recharge move, the shots will take out the first wall, go over his head, and hit the 2nd one on the other side, eliminating the need to jump on both sides to take it out. It can be done by both characters.
It's incredible to think that when this game came out for the SNES the sixth generation of consoles was already on its way with the Dreamcast, I love how long the Super Nintendo supported it even more so because I had one for a long time, it's a shame that this game was never released outside of Japan. Another thing I love about it is how it gives you a taste of "MegaMan Next Gen" using the sprites and artistic style of MegaMan 8 on the PS1/Sega Saturn and being the only MegaMan on the SNES to use saves instead of a password, I really I admire Capcom for this. And in the end, I think the game is really fun, a little frustrating due to the difficulty, but fun, it's really worth giving it a try.
Megaman and bass is one of my more favorite megaman games. After one playthrough it’s pretty fun though the initial playthrough isn’t to bad either I think Snes
I'm not a big fan of "Mega Man and Bass", but kudos to you for enjoying it. I only have two issues with it, but they're substantial enough to make me not enjoy the game much. The game skips out a lot on Setups. Enemies are often introduced in inappropriate or unsafe environments, making the difficulty curve flat with lots of beginner's traps. More importantly, enemies are reused frequently, so the actual designs quickly become repetitive and unimaginative after a while. The game lacks flow and inspiration, thus I don't enjoy it as much as other instalments (my favourites being 4 and 9).
I love the way you point out both things you like, and dislike in your reviews. Even if you like or dislike something, you gotta give credit where it's due, and not where it isn't
The fact that devs wanted to make this game "tough as nails" is the reason why this game is so good. It's a hardcore Megaman challenger's game that's difficult but still fair. Whoever said it was designed only for Bass isn't thinking clearly because if it was that way then you shouldn't even be able to clear the game with Megaman.
Hmmm I wouldn't be so sure. I just finished beating the game twice in one sitting (first with Bass, then with Mega Man) about ten minutes ago and came to this video to check out other people's experiences. In my opinion, the game plays MUCH more smoothly with Bass. It really does feel like the game was designed for him, making the Mega Man sections way more clunky and frustrating. I do love the game but I only love it as Bass. As Mega Man I only "kinda like" it.
Thank you for this video. After watching this I remembered that I had this game on my Super Nintendo and never beat it as a kid. Went back to play it the last few days and finally beat it as Megaman. Now to beat it with Bass
this is the mega man game i could play on a touch screen emulator and beat competently with both characters. Especially megaman, with the MADE FOR TOUCH SCREEN AUTO CHARGE! They were thinking ahead of their times, bros.
I begged it parents for an entire summer to import this game, even after having already beat it via emulation. Didn't start collecting all the cds until I owned the cart. Some of my favorite memories was trying to collect them all with my brother's before school everyday.
I really loved Megaman & Bass. I played an untranslated ROM back in the day, and got the GBA version when it came out. Yeah the GBA version was a bit cheap because of the window size, but everything was still there and it was still a good time. Playing through as both characters was extremely rewarding. It would get hard and I'd try the other character, which is where I discovered that the stages are easier as Bass and the bosses are easier as Megaman, which is a fascinating way to balance the game. It's not like, say, Castlevania Rondo of Blood where one character is the easy mode. I wound up going through both versions at the same time, rather than playing as just one, and it made it so interesting and engaging to switch back and forth, identifying challenges, and working out strategies for one character while playing as the other. Truly a unique experience. I also rather liked the way you unlocked stages on a map screen; it gave a real sense of accomplishment. Granted, it meant there was far less mystery about "who is weak to this weapon" which was one of my favorite things about a new Megaman game, but it's not one of the main-line games so I'm fine with it, let's experiment and try something fun! My only complaint was that it used the Megaman 8 art style instead of the Megaman 7 art style.
I don’t know if you want to be reminded of it due to you seeming to disown that video, but I felt this was a way more nuanced review than the Remake or Rebreak review. I haven’t played the game personally, but it’s cool to see and I commend you for improving as a critic.
I don’t have any strong feelings for the ROR one way or another, I haven’t watched it in almost seven years, after all. The only thing I could say I have against it is that me from seven years ago was in it, because he’s a silly fellow. I only glossed over the ROR just because people were expecting me to pay massive tribute to that video in this one, so I figured I’d subvert expectations. But, glad you enjoyed this one.
It's been one of my favorites since I first played it on SNES many years ago. Challenging, some good secrets and extras to find, fantastic art style and soundtrack.
Mega Man X6 is nowhere near as challenging as Mega Man & Bass. Although that's not saying MM&B is extremely difficult; it's very manageable, even as Mega Man, if people just learn to play it differently. X6, though, is just tedious and drawn-out; there are plenty of checkpoints, including before the boss and getting a game over goes right back to those checkpoints, all weapon energy gets refilled on each respawn, and all the "difficult" parts are handled either by attrition or doing something that's simple but poorly explained by the game.
@@carlosaugusto9821 What is this even supposed to mean? First, what are you implying MM&B is a response to? Second, X5 is arguably more difficult than X6, so that point doesn't even make sense
25:35 Megaman can actually destroy the fist before it breaks the platform by using the drill, or you can air stall with lightning to easily clear the gap.
For the longest time I didn't even know this game had a GBA port, I just played it on the Super Nintendo emulator and the patch. Always liked how in that era of Mega Man games they were looking for ways to use the side characters, made the games feel more lively. The Transceiver was a neat way to incorporate Roll into the game even though they didn't make her playable. And the thing about the special crystal stage is that you don't need to do it all at once right before the Castle Stages, you can go there as soon you beat a stage from the second wave of Robot Masters.
I imported the original SFC game back in the day when it first came out. My brother and I loved it. I was so hyped when it came out on GBA cuz it'd finally be in English, but I couldn't beat it cuz it was borderline unplayable. My brother got a repro cart for the SNES a few years ago, and that's the only way I play it now. It's not my favorite game, but I always liked it a lot, and I loved the fan service of the CD collecting with the robot master info. Definitely an underrated classic Mega Man game.
8 and MM&B are two of my favs, any game where you can upgrade rock into an unkillable monster alongside good weapons gets an A+ in my book (maybe it’s the power fantasy idk) regardless of how unpopular an opinion it is 😅
i still find ironic how the most brutal and hardcore megaman game ever exist has the most relaxing and serene soundtrack of the franchise heavily underrated by internet opinion and gba port, easily one of the best classic megaman game, all weapons are useful and fun to play without falling in the broken category like metal blade or jewel satellite, ice wall must be the most well designed weapon in the entire franchise, there so much fun using it stages doesn't feel unfair or bad designed (king stage 2 sucks, nobody gonna denied that) and both characters are fun to use
No joke, I LOVE MM & Bass out of all the original Megaman games (Next to MM7). i like the art-style, I love the soundtrack, I enjoy the challenge, and I definitely prefer playing as Bass more. Double-jumping, multi-directional shooting, AND being able to fly with your Treble Robodog Mech-suit upgrade? I'd take THAT over having a charge shot, sliding and I kinda don't like MM's floppy-looking rubbery animation lol xD If the game ever got a remaster, like Maverick Hunter X on PSP, I'd be pretty happy :)
3:45 Megaman and Bass was always thought of as a spin off game. That's why they recognized the existence of handheld games and Wily Tower. It wasn't until Megaman 9 that they decided to canonize it, but it seems to me that they quickly regretted it, because since the collections were released, his existence has hardly been mentioned.
Always thought it was weird that this game got so much hate, I know back then most were exposed to the GBA version but if you're playing it now you're definitely playing it on SNES lol, I saw a weird comparison to this game and X6 but this game was meant to be one of the hardest Mega Man games and was for hardcore Mega Man fans while X6 wasn't it was just poorly made.
@MitoRequiem Imagine if EarthwormJim 2,Sonic The Hedgehog,Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3,Doom II and Tales of Phantasia had their legacies based on their terrible GBA ports. Megaman and Bass got done dirty.
Both are very poorly designed so theres not a whole lot of difference. This is probably a bit worse since enemies are HP bloated to a degree and theres no checkpoint abuse unlike X6
@@Jrdotan I don't see how you can consider this game's design poor, especially when you look at all the issues seen in Mega Man X6 and consider that none of those are present here. This game is considered by most to be very difficult, sure. That's just how the levels and combat were designed. What makes any of that "poorly designed"?
@@josephwj7199 In a platformer, good design means a lot of things mainly, some rules are gold standards and need to be followed such as the introduction of gimmicky elements in safe enviroments so the player can experiment with said gimmick and be prepared to when the game use it as a challenge, the difficulty have to be a consistent difficulty curve that usually starts easy and then it ramps up as the player progresses, having its hardest and most brutal challenges at the very end of a stage (better yet if after said challenge you get a reward such as a life or something like that), the stages have thematics and as such enemies have to be properly placed to make it come to life. How many of these MM&Bass follows? Take burner man stage as an example. it introduces the spear gimmick to the player and the lava rain in a safe enviroment? or just damage you/kill you and expect you to learn from that? None of the stages is particularly well designed, they feel like bandaid stages that has enemies and assets of multiple other stages from other games tied together without care or proper analysis.

Looove me some Rockman & Forte. Bass' control is just so much fun to play around with. Double-jumping out of a dash is so much fun, it should be illegal. Great review, buddy!
As a kid I was obsessed with Megaman 7. When I got in middle school my father bought me Megaman & Bass on GBA knowing I would explode of excitement at the idea of playing as Bass. Which I did. But after my first playing session I had a reality check. The game's difficulty was brutal for 11 yo me 😂 But it didn't matter at the time. I enjoyed the game nontheless and got good enough to complete it. It was hard and unfair but man I had fun ❤
I agree with most of this video, except, one thing, DEI sucks it makes games worse because they focus on "The message" rather than the game. Sincerely some guy from South America.
Many people tend to complain about this game because of SomeCallMeJohnny. It's a very solid game with a respectable amount of challenge. If you want a Megaman game that is absurdly unfair and unforgivable as far as level design and checkpoints, try Megaman Unlimited. For example, the Plane boss in King Stage 2 was critiqued as "Death is certain if you play as Megaman if he uses the fist attack", but you can very easily negate that because Lightnig Bolt holds you in the air, I think people like SomeCallMeJohnny have a serious skill issue.
Nah comparing the Snes fight with the gba fight shows a devious change, on GBA he shoots the first far more often [Or if its not that then the lowrer resolution keeps him from going up too much and ends up making him crack multiple platforms in 1 fist launch] which creates pits more often
Tbh i was kinda disappointed with his Zero review cuz I knew he was gonna talk about the popular issues other people talked about especially with the Star system, Cyber elves, and Zero 1’s Retry chips (which that part should be universally hated) and sadly no mention of the Hit Priority System that Top Zero Players preformed very well especially Magus Zero
Regarding each video just being the creator's opinion, you do a good job of explaining yours. It's true not every opinion or preference can be explained, but for example I like revisiting the bosses. But I understand why you don't beyond just "you don't like that" because you explained it well. Also, shame on me for being surprised who the final boss was even after the "big reveal..."
Mega Man & Bass (GBA) was the only classic game I ever owned growing up. Despite the screen crunch and difficulty I really liked it. And yes I did beat it as both characters
I have to say that this was a very balanced observation on Mega Man & Bass. I was inspired to try it a few weeks ago after stumbling upon a few videos related on the subject. From my experience, I did quickly grow to like it, but I knew very early in that there were a lot of small yet potent issues which dragged the adventure down for me. MM&Bass was trying its absolute best to be a good game with what it had, and to some extent, it did succeed in that regard. But, for everything it tried to do differently, it always fell a little short one way or another. I actually really enjoyed the 8 robot-master stages and Dynamo & Burner man were actually fun fights. However, I won't deny that the King stages definitely soured it for me. It's certainly a bittersweet game for sure.
It would have been the best Mega Man game ever in my opinion if they just scrapped and redid the King stages. The core stages, bosses, and special weapons are the best the franchise has ever seen in my opinion. But then those crappy King stages.... Talk about fumbling at the goal line! 😭
I liked this one quite a lot, but that is because, since the beginning, I wanted to play this one because of Bass, which I was found to be really cool (even cooler than Zero). So when I got the game I went straight to Bass and never even bothered with Mega Man. The fact Bass more like the X saga was a even bigger plus, as I much prefer X over classic. And Bass weakness, the gun, honestly was only weaker against enemies that have invincibility frames, cause all the others would go down fast with the shooting barrage. Being able to angle was also super helpful in some fights, and since I would never hold back from using weapon weakness, to me it looked like Bass had only advantages over Mega Man, which for me was fine, cause as I said before, I was in for Bass. His fused form in this game is badass, and overall, I had fun with the game. Hope to see playable Bass in the future.
Happy to see this one getting some much needed love. I grew with Mega Man, the second game was an early NES rental for me and I became a life long fan playing the games at release starting with 3. When the fan translation scene first started gaining momentum in the late 90s this game was one my friends and I considered one of the later SNES gems that never came to America (which for the most part are JRPGs) so always held it in high regards. I didn't even realize it wasn't well liked until like 2015 or so, like 15 years after I first played it. It really is astonishing how they pulled this off on 16 bit hardware.
I loved playing Mega Man & Bass on the GBA. But never got to finish it due to my cousins kept deleting my save files. When Timewalk games made a reproduction of the SNES version with an English translation, I got it and was able to finish what I started long time ago. I have to say, the music on SNES version sound some much better than GBA version.
Love the rant at the end! That's a weird lesson that people on the Internet need to learn - in all, these are just people's thoughts on a game and doesn't affect how they feel. It's so strange that people get so angry at other's opinions when that's all they are... opinions. Thanks for the awesome video! Always enjoy your take on these old games i grew up with! 7:57-8:05 I can tell what game series you've been replaying as of late.
Also, it's funny how you bring up your own history with the game, but completely neglect the RoR episode you did with Exo.
I think this is one of the first times I heard you say lgbt mabye you said it in a last of us video
Fun Fact: Looking internally at the rom, people found that this game actually was labeled "Rockman 8.5" by the dev team.
Imagine if we could have had "MegaMan 8 & Bass" just like Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Would have been amazing
@@dakotaisgreat Given it's not on the same hardware (SNES instead of PS1 & Saturn) that probably wouldn't make sense. Honestly neither would have 8.5, which would have fallen into the same "sequel on lower hardware" hole that the video mentioned.
@@dakotaisgreat that wouldn't work at all lol
As a kid I always dreamed of playing as Bass in MM8 with his moveset from this game. He would likely be beyond broken, and it would be very difficult to program even now, but still.
Hobbs & Shaw = Fast & Furious 8.5?
Mega Man & Bass = Mega Man 8.5?
Mega Man & Bass being on the SNES is fitting considering Mega Man is known for pleasing an audience of people who are were too poor to get the new console or had it as a hand-me-down with high quality games. One thing I like about the Mega Man games is how they help the little guy
That sounds sad and sweet at the same time
So that's why they kept making games for Gameboy color in the 2000s

This is one of the best megaman games and freaking nes ugly fans can shove it. Megaman 7 with 8 sprite rom hack, megaman and bass and megaman 8 are the best classic megaman games period and nes megaman sucks!
@@dominosnostradamus2415that has nothing to do with what I said. I haven’t even played Mega Man & Bass, so I can’t even speak on it’s quality
However, the 3 or 4 of the NES games are better than Mega Man 8, sorry dude.
@@dnmstarsi from what I've heard, the odd bit in Dr. Light's bio seems to have been a mistranslation from the GBA version.
God, why did I not notice this?
It's cool, but mega man 7 already has a level like this so I wasn't as impressed the second time
So, they put the re-used assets right in your face from the start. The Museum OST is top tier.
As well as the dog enemies from Wood Man’s stage as background frames in the boss room
Oh wow, checked and it's actually $150.
I really hope Capcom could make more of this and dont listen to the people complaining the game is too hard
@bluedistortions I was stunned when I realized my parents spent the equivalent of $140 on Earthbound for my sister and I.
Hitoshi Ariga, the mangaka for Megamix not only did promo art for the game, but designed Burnerman and Dynamo Man
Koji Izuki, who penned the MM8 and MM&B manga, designed Coldman and Pirateman
Iwamoto Yoshihiro, the man behind the X series manga, designed Groundman and Magicman.
3:17 that was a pretty good Black Doom impression
Funny story
I played the GBA version of this game back in highschool on an emulator that somehow wasn't blocked by the school, back then I still didn't know it was the hardest Megaman and just thought all Megaman games were just that way. I got up to about King stage 1 or 2 and then played some other Megaman games, and then found out about this games reputation, I played the SNES version as both characters, beat it and enjoyed it. This game was advanced Megaman training for me in a way, as it made every other game easier
This game being someone's first megaman is insane to me
Heck I've always been terrible at classic MegaMan games, it's just that I never beat _any_ Master in this one
@TamNguyen-hm2lj I played other Megaman games before this, but it was the first one I played seriously
i still feel like the really hard parts of the game are the final stage. but overall, most of the stages are not that much more than other games in the franchise.
Ice wall can be jumped off of mid-air if you're out of lightning, but the timing is strict
Kind of like Mega ball in 8
Yeah that feels epic ngl
Yeah I also found out by accident when I ran out of Copy Vision and Spread Drill (my go to weapons for the boss) and just testing what other weapons worked
I wouldn't have been surprised if this video was called "Learning To Love Mega Man & Bass"

MegaMan and Bass is one of those games where you have to GET GOOD at.
Exactly! 💯
Less so GET GOOD and more so ADJUST.
I agree, it's something you need to get good at to appreciate it
It was this gameboy game’s cartridge that fell under my car seat and couldn’t find until we slid the seat forward and accidentally crushed it.
Oof. That segway hurt so bad that I need an E-Tank
Agreed
The franchise has a long history going back and forth about difficulty. The most blatant moment was probably after the mid 90s from MM8 to MM&B, and MMX4 to X5 to X6. MMZ and MMBN also had that back and forth but kind of more subtle.
Megaman 9 reminds you of the good ol' days, Megaman and Bass reminds you that Megaman is supposed to be challenging by removing your safety nets.
I didn't even know Megaman and Bass was considered bad. I thought it was great, my only issue was double tapping to dash.
I'm pretty sure the R button also dashes. Dash controls are the same as Mega Man X
Megaman and Bass are my Favourite megaman Ever, I didnt knew people hate it .. must be cause of gba version
I loved it too, tough as nails , slick and cool. Can't believe its disliked as a whole.
Same here. I loved this game. The qualms about the lower GBA res reducing visibility and making it a more difficult game are spot on.
Yeah. Who even uses double tap to dash? I always found this feature annoying, but it's been here since MMX1.
Everyone should always form their own opinion on things, rather than parroting other opinions.
Nothing can replace real experience
Yeah I agree
I always wanted to play pizza tower as everyone said it was good and that stuff just to waste my money on a game that I consider to hate the player
The thing I hate the most is when the game will massively punish the player for simple mistakes
Looking at you oregano desert secret 1 entrance
i don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Akari Kaida is one of the composers for this game. she also worked on breath of fire 3 which also seems to have a jazz influence on the music. also my favorite megaman soundtrack, it's so unique and the chords are lovely.
Who the fuck is Mars?"
It's also worth mentioning that, at the time of release (at least here in Taiwan) there was considerable hype around it.
I love this game, no matter how much time I spent failing at it when I was younger. It’s such a blast to speed through nowadays.
The X6 music playing in the background when closing in on Megaman talking about how it's the hardest game ever was just *chefs kiss* 😂
Honestly I prefer Mega Man & Bass over Mega Man 8
Fistbump
This absolutely should have been included in the Mega Man Legacy Collection 2. It was referenced in MM9's ending! They already had a built-in SNES emulator, so it would have made perfect sense. I think the only reason it wasn't was because there was no official translation of it, aside from the GBA version which has some real problems.
I've always thought of the Mega Man series like this:
Classic Mega Man was made for all ages but mostly for children with the way the art direction moved towards.
I loved MegaMan & bass as it's kinda an 8.5 in between 8 and the long awaited actually MegaMan 9 but that's another story lol
Not even "kinda". The name of the ROM header is literally "ʀᴏᴄᴋᴍᴀɴ 8.5".

I can still remember when you and ExoParadigmGamer did a Remake or Rebreak on this game (can't believe it's been almost seven years ever since), and that video made me reflect on MM&B a lot.

The Bass part to let his buster shoot through walls is also very good.

Those aren’t really “two gripes” then
I love the way you point out both things you like, and dislike in your reviews.

Well that defines my MegaMan experience I'll just have to practice.

I got recommended one of your videos the other day and binged all your classic Mega Man reviews last night; you do great work!
i was shit talking this game to some friends 30 minutes ago, you have great timing

For me Mega man & bass is the equivalent of megaman x6, yet i enjoy playing both
Mega Man X6 is nowhere near as challenging as Mega Man & Bass.
@@josephwj7199 X6 is a response to X5 in difficulty so the guy's comparison works in that sense
8 and MM&B are two of my favs, any game where you can upgrade rock into an unkillable monster alongside good weapons gets an A+ in my book (maybe it’s the power fantasy idk) regardless of how unpopular an opinion it is 😅
Agreed on the soundtrack. The MM&B music has this great vibe to it-like you’ve unearthed a long-lost treasure. It gives me the feels.
i still find ironic how the most brutal and hardcore megaman game ever exist has the most relaxing and serene soundtrack of the franchise
heavily underrated by internet opinion and gba port, easily one of the best classic megaman game, all weapons are useful and fun to play without falling in the broken category like metal blade or jewel satellite, ice wall must be the most well designed weapon in the entire franchise, there so much fun using it
stages doesn't feel unfair or bad designed (king stage 2 sucks, nobody gonna denied that) and both characters are fun to use
Look who’s back to believing that internet opinions determine everything. Stop assuming that’s what determines anything🤦♂️
7:51 omg. It’s beautiful!! Thank you for making this a reality.
I'd take THAT over having a charge shot, sliding and I kinda don't like MM's floppy-looking rubbery animation lol xD
If the game ever got a remaster, like Maverick Hunter X on PSP, I'd be pretty happy :)
The hottest take of all time
This was the very first Mega Man game I was able to beat back when I was getting into the series. I love this game
Finally, someone defending this absolute banger of a game!
@MitoRequiem
Imagine if EarthwormJim 2,Sonic The Hedgehog,Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3,Doom II and Tales of Phantasia had their legacies based on their terrible GBA ports.
@@josephwj7199 In a platformer, good design means a lot of things
mainly, some rules are gold standards and need to be followed such as the introduction of gimmicky elements in safe enviroments so the player can experiment with said gimmick and be prepared to when the game use it as a challenge, the difficulty have to be a consistent difficulty curve that usually starts easy and then it ramps up as the player progresses, having its hardest and most brutal challenges at the very end of a stage (better yet if after said challenge you get a reward such as a life or something like that), the stages have thematics and as such enemies have to be properly placed to make it come to life.
How many of these MM&Bass follows?
Take burner man stage as an example. it introduces the spear gimmick to the player and the lava rain in a safe enviroment? or just damage you/kill you and expect you to learn from that?
How many enemies do represent the fire themed stage? Rhynos? golems? electric robots? none of them have anything to do with the fire theme.
and so on and so fourth.

J’s contrarianism is second to none.
As a kid I was obsessed with Megaman 7. When I got in middle school my father bought me Megaman & Bass on GBA knowing I would explode of excitement at the idea of playing as Bass. Which I did.
But after my first playing session I had a reality check. The game's difficulty was brutal for 11 yo me 😂
But it didn't matter at the time. I enjoyed the game nontheless and got good enough to complete it. It was hard and unfair but man I had fun ❤
I was expecting a defense of this game from you because I remember your collab review with Exoparadigmgamer.
And…?
I may have played this more times on the SNES than you have, but it's because I absolutely love this game!
I agree with most of this video, except, one thing, DEI sucks it makes games worse because they focus on "The message" rather than the game. Sincerely some guy from South America.
This game had a sequel for the Wonderswan, a Japan only console.
Megaman and Bass is my favorite classic megaman game by far.
The Museum song is probably my favorite mega man song of all time
I liked this one quite a lot, but that is because, since the beginning, I wanted to play this one because of Bass, which I was found to be really cool (even cooler than Zero).
I did not have a PSX this was my MegaMaxX4 in home I had. And I liked it
Happy to see this one getting some much needed love.
I really liked that game as a kid. The music, the graphics, great!
I genuinely like this game too. I find the challenge satisfying to beat.
14:01 Yeah, I can't lie, first thing I did when playing this game was change the dash mapping lol
I played this game on the GBA, I remember linking it a lot, never heard about people disliking it until recently.
(Though i didn't grow up with this particular one lol)
This video series is really making me wanna get into the megaman series, so i thank you for that love you're work, btw
