I Love this Television Special. It's magical even now...I wonder if they knew how it would stand up to the test of time. I've watched a few times. It's a Wonderful time capsule...Never gets old!
From Australia,I was obsessed with the Cowsills, had all their records...very special&I had the hugest girl crush on Susan,Barry was also very cute,we are were blessed to have that musical family, share their wonderful gifts.
Oh my gosh! The Cowsills are still around! I just loved them back in the 60’s when I was a teenager. I got to attend a live concert and had front row seats! It is very exciting to have them take part in the Mr. Rogers tribute.
Back when the Cowsills were popping out the hit songs, I confess my world was The Beatles so I never really followed the Cowsills except for loving what I heard on the radio. Now, I have recently rediscovered The Cowsills through UA-cam videos of old shows like this and interviews, and through their current music, interviews, videos, and even John playing for The Beach Boys! I never realized just how talented they all were...and are. Is it too late to have a crush on John, he's only two years older than me? 😊
Even though ,me being born in 1968, i still remeber watching reruns of these episodes . And now still today, as i watch them over, i am reminded of why i always loved and adorded this family as i still do ❤
I love The Cowsills then and now and listened to them in the 60s ! Im 3 years older than Susan . She has a very pretty voice I hear on all their videos then and more now !
I watched a documentary on Showtime about the Cowsill's that painted a darker picture of this family, each one of the kids told about how thier father was abusive and ruined them after taking over as manager and even went on to tell about what they thought were millions of dollars made that they never saw one cent of and have no idea where it went,it was just sad what these kids went through you would just have to watch it and see it for yourself, and they aren't the only child stars who endured that kind of stuff the Jackson's went through the same thing as I'm sure many others have they appear on these tv specials and look all happy but we have no clue as to what thier lives are like behind the scenes.
That was Family Band, and incredibly sad. I barely recognized Billy, and it was so sad when they found out Billy passed away just as they were having Barry's service.
Barry Cowsill was tragically killed in Hurricane Katrina. The Cowsills were the inspiration for another TV family, The Partridge Family. The Cowsills also sang the theme song for the very popular show “Love American Style”.
I just looked that up after seeing your comment- and for some weird reason the singers behind the Partridge Family 'singing' did the theme after the first season. 🤨
They were so talented. It's a shame their dad was such a nightmare. Besides the mental and physical abuse, apparently he lashed out at the producers of the Ed Sullivan show after their first appearance. The rest of their appearances on the show were cancelled after that.
Richard was shipped off to serve two tours in Vietnam and came back a broken man. They had four draft-age sons in 1968. Richard seems to have been the sacrificial lamb.
I think my brothers turned the Chanel when they came on!LOL! I sure would have watched them!! our dresses were so short back then!! you could see our underwear!!
Amazing and unforgettable just like our one and only beloved "flower girl". With the Beverly Hills and "wild frontier" experienced host. Stay safe everyone!
I am familiar with some of the Cowsills' songs, but honestly never really took notice of this 'family' unit until recently, thanks to UA-cam. However, I am old enough that I should have known more of this family group; that I was born in '67. While I do not know this at a fact, but it would seem that the Partridge Family show was modeled in part from the Cowsills... I could be wrong, but that's my guess.
It was. They were supposed to star in it until They actually met the producers, who realised that some of them probably couldn't act. And when the mother was replaced by Shirley Jones, the father vetoed the whole idea, even though their mother suffered from severe stage fright and didn't want to be there.
How tragically ironic at 5:50, Ebsen gave that speech about their "father" Bud, when he was directly responsible for their break-up in '72, and the tragedy the family endured later.
The Cowsills (actual musicians) were originally slated to be TVs “The Partridge Family” (not actual musicians.) Some Hollywood producer wanted Jack Cassidy’s Son (David) and the others. His excuse was the Cowsills “had bad teeth!”
I read that the Cowsill mother was not wanted because she was too nervous and did not like performing. I guess they wanted a different mom and the kids said no. I didn’t see anything wrong with the kid’s teeth so maybe that story about the mom was true. She didn’t look too comfortable onstage to me.
The idea that a family who sings like the Cowsills would necessarily be able to act well enough to do a tv show seems ridiculous. Oh wait, I just remembered about thirty “family shows” in which the actors also can’t act.
The network wanted the kids but not the Mom. They wanted a professional actress/singer for the that role. Bud Cowsill turned it down. He was always killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

The reason they didn't do Te Partridge Family as because the producers wanted Shirley Jones to play Barbara. The kids said no dice! It's our mom or none of us !
Wow their father Bud looked just like Bud! And turns out that father was an alcoholic abuser behind the scenes who lost their money. Wow one never knows!
You always get the sense the mom was compelled to join the group against her will just so they could have a schtick... she looks so uncomfortable in each of their performances
@@wheelinthesky300 I did a number of comments on the threads for this show. The Cowsill's own songs were lip synced and all else, which were barbershop, ragtime and vaudeville songs were likely public domain.

That exists in every era (I'm confused by Taylor Swift's popularity) but was only really a big deal in the sixties because it was much starker and you had the war and hair styles blah blah blah. It sounds quaint now.
Barbara mentions here that Susan is 9 years old. That puts the recording here prior to May 20,1969 when she turns 10. So, this is recorded late 1968 or early 1969. Speaking of glorious Susan,,,,the only Cowsill born in O H I O . Go BUCKEYES!
Yep! In fact, it was going to be these guys, but because mother Barbara had terrible stage fright, she really didn’t want to do it. Father Bud wouldn’t let any of the kids act if the mother didn’t join in. And so, we have the cast that we know and love today!
Immensely talented kids. I love their harmonies and their general vibe. But what an excruciatingly cornball 1960s entertainment style was imposed on them here... I say this as someone who grew up during this era and watched The King Family specials and Dean Martin shows and probably watched this thing when it was on. And I doubtless enjoyed it at the time. (I'm the same age as Susan Cowsill.) The Cowsill kids are vibrant and fresh but their mother is like an automaton, unfortunately. Especially when she speaks. And they keep trying to make Susan Cowsill into Shirley Temple. The veneer of normal family life was such an intense sell back then that nothing you saw on TV was anything like real---except for the Vietnam War footage on the news. That transition must've been incredibly jarring for adults to watch---stuff like this and then the 10:00 nightly news with war and the seemingly endless student unrest of that time. Wow. The campus violence actually scared me off going to college---I didn't think it sounded safe to attend. (My parents didn't influence me in that. They wanted me to go.) I remember the war news being on but not watching it, just that it was always there somewhere. And the front page of the newspaper every day had the death counts of our soldiers.
Can someone explain Barbara's comment about Paul not wearing underwear??? That was weird. Was commando the "in thing" in the sixties? Even if it was that was a strange comment. Is Paul the lead singer now? I can't tell who the survivors are except Susan.
Hard to watch after you learn how dysfunctional and toxic the parents were in raising their kids. The dad was a real bastard and the mother was weak. Hardly an all-American family.

Here the real question. The Osmond brothers were already in tv with andy williams and many other shows and then comes the The Cowstills and of course the Jacksons. So i still think the Osmonds came first.
This is too weird, and I love the Cowsills. If you know much of their story, what a jerk dad was and all, it's even more cringe-worthy. The Partrige family was a situation comedy consisting of more detailed scenary and witten comedy for that purpose. This was unfortunately not a good choice for a real pop group. The focus shoud've remained on their music. Either Music or TV both hardly ever works. People either watch tv or listen to music.
