I don't even use pedals, but I love this video. I'm a Civil Engineer, so I especially liked the bridge joint analogy. Great work. Back to Hell solid couplers!
Why? That's not their only use. They were around for years before being used between pedals. They're M-to-M 1/4" telephone line adapters. I use 3 of them daily with 3 cables I have that, have female ends on them to convert them to male ends. Then I can use those cables like a normal instrument cable.
Totally valuable! An additional point against such couplers: When your pedals are firmly attached to your pedalboard using Velcro, whenever you want to remove a pedal, your need to apply leverage of some kind to its base, and that means you are torquing the jacks on it as well as on any neighboring pedals.
Yeah seriously I had no idea about this, man. Glad someone addressed this!!! I’m so sick of seeing these things used...worst case is when it’s on a pedalboard thst has Velcro holding the pedals down and it sinks down a couple millimeters...I can hear the jacks screaming in agony...
Thanks a lot Colin. Your video is so accurate. I just built my first ever pedalboard and when it came to the couplers, I saw those evil pieces of garbage in the guitar shop and I thought "wow genius idea !" so I bought them without the shadow of doubt. What a fool I was. Once at the rehearsal I instantly noticed the wrong alignment between my pedals and the day after I found this video in my UA-cam suggestions. I am now on my way to buy flexible couplers. I will share these words of wisdom with the friends !
As an engineering student, I greatly appreciate your detailed explanation of the stresses the jacks experience. It's all spot on. Rare to see in the music world and very much welcomed.
The logical endpoint of this line of thinking would be to remove the housings from all your pedals, stack the circuit boards on top of each other, solder them together, and then put the whole towering monstrosity inside a new, custom-built housing the size of a laundry hamper. And _then_ you attach one giant button to the top that just says "Gain".
100% correct. I've seen more damaged pedals in my shop caused by rigid couplers than by any other source of abuse. I can spot where a rigid coupler was used by whether the 1/4" phone jack is normal dirty-noisy or VERY noisy.
I can attest to this. Made the mistake of using one and it broke my damn Spaceman Sputnik. And my POG. And then I stopped using them. I learned the hard way, lol.
Absolutely, and 85-90 percent of pedals I've had to work on have (dirty or) sprung (wired) input/output jacks. Some PCB mounted jacks even develope cracked solder joints. The "rest" may actually have other problems. Use patch cables and occasionally check to be sure the pedal's jack's nuts are tight.
Agreed on all points. One additional point you didn't mention: When you've got your pedals attached to your pedalboard via velcro, you've got to peel up a whole strip of them together to replace one, and it puts tremendous stress on the adjacent pedals as you're doing so.
Top man! Thanks for the info - immediately after watching this I removed the devils work and have gone back to an untidy, cable strewn but damage free pedal board. Thanks for spreading the good word.

AND i already knew hammond style box sides were not exactly perpendicular from building vape mods. i didn't really want to use them, at the moment i don't even have a board, or even a bunch of pedals. just 2 vox stomplabs, bass and guitar. i do sometimes hook them together, and really need minimum 1 foot patch cable and all i have are 6", so have to cock them sideways a bit to be close enough. i've had a 1 foot in my cart for a while, just haven't gotten around to it. so, at the moment i wouldn't even be able to use them at all. but one day i might've been tempted, and now i see the light my brother, halelujah! seriously though, this channel is definitely one of my favs. absolute favorite guitar tech channel, by far... just keep finding old videos to make me less ignorant with guitars, love it.

Another tip...if you put your pedals too close together and something goes wrong with a pedal or cable, it’s a PITA to diagnose the problem and find the offending pedal/cable. Keep them separated enough that you can easily remove a cable and bypass a pedal/cable easily if needed. I found this out the hard way while setting up for a 1 hour festival slot. After finding the bad cable, we only had 20 mins left to actually play.

I cant realy understand why would anyone use theese...Last week at Thomann i even saw some extra slim (unlike me) patchcables that basicly solve the problem these were just trying to. Now i did not dive in to them as they are of no use for me because of my single overdrive pedal that i simply conect to my quintessentialmetalamplifire via normal cable, but they cant suck more than these solid ones or the abcence of the new Colins Sexy Guitars Tshirt.
CSGuitars no wories! I get it that it is a big thing to do and that it takes time. At this point it is almost a tradition, i think. It just feels wrong to coment whitout that part lol.
Hum, good advice, I had never thought of it. One exception, however, I think: if your jack socket inside your pedal isn't soldered directly on the PCB, like in most DIY pedal. You can then use this not only to reduce space, but to have less resistance, and thus tone sucking.
My brother sent your video to me to help him identify your accent. I have absolutely no clue about guitars, much less all these electric stuff that you can use with them but I could listen to you for hours. And I even learnt a few things, thanks :D

Thanks. Those connectors were indeed tempting.
I'm working on it, got a whole new merch line coming
CSGuitars no wories! I get it that it is a big thing to do and that it takes time. At this point it is almost a tradition, i think. It just feels wrong to coment whitout that part lol.
CSGuitars How about a Hoodie with: "Holy Order of CSGuitars" ;-)
I didn't even know these things existed
Unfortunately...
Used one of these for 3 years now with two MXR pedals. No problems.
Cuz their the same brand
I haven't seen a lot of your recent content, but I like the production value increase. Your lighting looks so much nicer.
This should be a MUST WATCH in every guitar or gear facebook group over the internet.
AHHHHH NOOOOO. I HAVE AN ORDER TO CANCEL NOW.
777SlipHate666 HURRY! Quick, before the dark one finds your precious pedals!
Lucky you! I bought a Z-connector two weeks ago...
I gotta slap my guitarist on the balls for using one of these now
Could be fun - lets see the video :-)
Steady on, just show him this vid..........much easier.
Make sure they don’t bounce back and hit you in the face.
That's very erotic
Well, he deserves a kick on the balls just for being a guitarist anyways...
Can you please read me bedtime stories? Love your accent
I would like to hear him saying "Eleven" several times :D
Hum, good advice, I had never thought of it. One exception, however, I think: if your jack socket inside your pedal isn't soldered directly on the PCB, like in most DIY pedal. You can then use this not only to reduce space, but to have less resistance, and thus tone sucking.
Awesome stuff Colin, thank you sir.
JUST GOTTA MAKE A CURVED PEDALBOARD
I think you’ve just found your get-rich-quick idea! Haha
3:38 Ah yes human Spain. I eat those too
Thank you SO much for this information!
That sharp turn from intense rant into heartfelt plea for support would make an American televangelist proud
My brother sent your video to me to help him identify your accent. I have absolutely no clue about guitars, much less all these electric stuff that you can use with them but I could listen to you for hours. And I even learnt a few things, thanks :D
Did you ever manage to identify my accent?
@@ScienceofLoud I am hoping that I was right and it is scottish :D (totally love it by the way)
Subbed just because of your interaction with the clown in the pinned comment.
I completely forgot I had pinned that.
Life is not as interesting now without Captain Caplock.
