Wow, my friend Colin I never thought I'd see the day you'd have short hair and here I am at almost 54 letting my hair reach my shoulders. I have said this a few times and I'll say it again, I've been watching CSGuitars since 2013 if I'm not mistaken, I've been a guiatrist for almost 40 years and I'm still not that good but if you really want to learn in depth about the science behind all the lovely amps and guitars we all love so much this channel is a mandatory watch. Cheers. Mike.

Two things.... 1) Unlike the SG Special, whose short scale and set neck require the two P90s to be spaced *way* too close to each other, the longer scale and bolt-on neck (which requires no room for a neck tenon) of this S-style guitar allow for the two pickups to actually *sound* different from each other. 2) It may be too late for this, but I'm a big fan of the Bill Lawrence half-out-of-phase wiring, first used commercially in the Jerry Donahue Telecaster. Normally, when two pickups are put out of phase, the cancellation results in a thin nasal tone and big volume drop. The "half" mod involves running the phase-reversed neck pickup through a cap to trim the bass (I use 10nf, but one can try other values). Because the two pickups (neck and bridge) have minimal overlap in that region, there is no volume drop resulting from cancellation. On the JD Tele, it resulted in a tone very similar to neck+middle on a Strat. I tried it out on a dual-SC "beater", and the resemblance to a Strat "cluck" was jaw-dropping. Inspired, I also tried it out on a dual-humbucker guitar. There was no way it was going to sound like a Strat, but it DID provide a very different-sounding and quite usable neck+bridge sound; again with no volume drop and none of the nasal reedy quality. Using a push-pull Tone pot to do the phase-flip with these two pickups might provide you with a 4th very distinctive tone. Give it a whirl. You might like it!
@@WyattBrown377 And please let us know how it works out. If it still sounds thin and reedy, try reducing the value of the cap to filter out a little more bass from the neck pickup (e.g., .0068uf instead of .01uf). I'll also note that if using the neck pickup on its own, its phase makes no difference in the sound. BUT, if one uses it on its own in the phase-flipped setting with the bass cut, you have yet a 5th tone available! Bonus!
I actually just fixed my first guitar from when I swapped the pots. One was grounding out, touching one of the wires to the shielding because it was routed for smaller pots and I used CTS full sized pots. So I finally pulled it apart since it's not my main guitar and I wasn't too worried about it. All it took was a couple of strips of electrical tape under it and on the wall next to the pot and I'm back in business. No more cutting out. I can actually play it again so it may get more playing time now. Just an inexpensive Silvertone SS10 HSS "Strat"(BLK/maple) with super low output singles at 4.2k & 4.3k and a Guitar Madness 59'er A5 bridge humbucker. Those low output singles are actually really nice. A big difference from my other Silvertone SS11(blue/rosewood) with 6.3k & higher singles.
I love Wilkinson Trems! I did a mod project on one of my guitars and wound up installing a Wilkinson 2 point trem and swapping the saddles for some Hipshot Modern Contour saddles for palm muting comfort and (barring my Floyd Rose) it’s the best trem I’ve ever played, I’m installing the same combo on my new partscaster
Love this build! One thing I’d do is get a five way switch and wire it in the Bill Lawrence tele switching system, which provides a filtered neck pickup position and a 90° out of phase position for neck and bridge pickups, in addition to the existing three pickup positions.
My fender 66 had the same clearance and action problems with the whammy bar. I used a grinder to cut it short, then bent it upwards to provide more clearance. works great, it's out of the way and I have way more leverage
Great job man. That mint green works well with the light blue. Good fix on the headstock tuner holes. I LOVE P90s and that guitar sounds brilliant feller. Good build - well done mate.
The Wilkinson bridges are excellent, even the Korean licenced ones. Tip: If your whammy bar is fouling the strings, pots or the range of downward motion is not enough, just bend the whammy bar..
I love to see Colin showing appreciation for P90's; they often feel like an overlooked pickup even though they have so many great qualities. Truly, thank you for this episode!
From Leo: A twin P-90 set up is a great flavor of tone in the world of Stratocaster. I rigged one up a few years back and still enjoy playing it. You did an excellent job getting yours together. Like you, I find the Wilkinson parts are better than many of the cheaper parts, well worth the dearer price.
Never thought I'd hear you doing punk but man was I happy to hear some Green Day shouting out of those P90s. Love the build, it's awesome. Similar to what I did with a rebuilt and refinished Squier 51 this Christmas (only this is MUCH fancier!)
That retailer sounds like they are really trying to be the go-to guitar parts shop, but they should look into the issues you mentioned. Taking your feedback and working to improve themselves based on it is what may take them from a good shop to a great shop.
That needs more thumbs. So many way too long guitar build videos. You invariably find yourself searching that time line for when he just plays it. This video was 17 minutes and felt like 5. Much improved pacing here.
Rad video, happy it was an experiment involving P90s. I just recently acquired a 2018 Epiphone Wilshire reissue thingie guitar thingie. Comes with P90s. Shit can hang, I got a friedman BEOD Deluxe making the noise, the p90s sound so rich. Imma put it in drop B soon and it’ll be filthy
"I'm gonna go for the blue body" *And if you look really closely, you will see the body is sold out.* Edit: Yes I get this was filmed in post, probably after everything was purchased, maybe after the guitar was assembled, and probably, and this is out there, on a later date when he had a clear head after building a guitar. I made the comment/joke/whimsical response because it's filmed like he's doing things right in that moment ("I'm going to buy this" "I'll order these parts separately"), making some of the choices, like a daphne blue body, seem nonsensical considering there's none left.
That's pretty cool. I really like the P-90's on a Strat. Cool look, interesting take. Only things I would change are bringing down the volume pot away from the bridge pick-up so it's not in the way when palm muting, and I really like contoured neck heels. I don't know why that's not just common practice by now.
The Yamaha Pacifica 112 series was a low-cost beginner's guitar but something they got right was to move the volume pot away from the bridge humbucker. Strangely Fender still don't do this for their Squier Affinity guitars, not even the HSS models. Though it wouldn't be too difficult to make a replacement pickguard, and optionally delete one of the tone pots.
That's almost identical to my Fender Noventa Strat that I just sold. No trem on the one I bought, but I will tell you the P90s were the best P90s I ever heard. I love Fender P90s. Beautiful guitar! I put silver knobs/pickup covers on mine, seemed to go better with the blue.
That guitar looks and sounda stunning! I'm almost tempted to do a p90 strat build myself. I love the fact that you modified the headstock yourself! I think that's something I'm gonna try out on my next build project.
Never underestimate what can make a great -sounding guitar. I have a book about master luthier Danny Ferrington (the guys who introduced acoustics that used body shapes of well-known solid-bodies). In the book, he recounts how he wanted to test out a particular pickup, so he cut out a body of plywood, and affixed a bridge and neck to it, assuming that it would be disassembled after the tryout. Slide legend Ry Cooder happens to walk in the shop, is intrigued by what Danny has cobbled together, tries it out, and asks to borrow it for a recording session later that day. I guess guitars are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get.
What an awesome guitar! I have a player sss strat and I'm gonna modify it to look like yours! I already had the body stripped and refinished in Daphne blue. Next I'm gonna get the pickguard and the P90 pickups. Only thing is i want a 5 way switch. Neck, bridge, both in parallel, both in series, and both out of phase. Can't wait!
Collin, great job! I like crazy Strats too. I am working on one where it will be two Filtertron pickups! About the tuner post holes, I had the same issue on my Squire Partscaster. I bought what turned out to be a Affinity body with a Standard Squire Telecaster headstock and the guy used the old school Fender "F" tuners on it and wrapped the original bushings in electric tape.😣 So I bought some GFS conversion bushings for it and it and it fit perfectly (a hint for next time). I also picked up their version of a Bigsby style vibrato and rollerbridge. My buddy kicked me a set of Fender Noiseless pickups and I also got a Fender "F" neck plate to compliment the tuners. I opted for the black coversion bushings with black knobs (abalone tops) and a black output jack because the previous guy opted for a wonky black/chrome look that this looks better. The guitar is a midnight blue finish with an abalone/shell type pickguard from Amazon which was what I fell for when I bought this guitar. I have a few Partscasters and they are wonderful. Some have mid to high quality bodies, necks and electronics on them. Most are a mixture of high and low parts. All are fun to play and like your guitar, sometimes it takes awhile to really get them EXACTLY where you want them. But that's the fun and that's the journey and the main point of doing these guitars.😎👍✨
It's *Squier.* It's right there on the headstock. You say you own one or more. So how do you make such a mistake? You see that headstock over & over & over but still can't spell it correctly. 🤷 And partscasters aren't a thing. They're called modified *insert model here*. I don't get the want to call 13 different Fender models by the same exsct name. That's like calling everything they sell a Strat. It's just plain ignorant. Which is why I'll never refer to my guitars as that. I call them what they are. A modified Strat. A modified Tele. And guess what? Nobody, has to ask what kind of guitar it is since I'm not calling 12 different models of guitar "partscaster" because it's been modified. Again, that's just stupid, IMHO. Partscaster isn't a real word and doesn't actually exist. It's made up bs to replace a word that already exists that describes those guitars to a "T". Modified. If you see an ad that states "modified Jag for sale" vs "partscaster for sale", which is going to gain your interest more? The one with the most info aka modified Jag. You know exactly what you're clicking before ever looking at the ad. But partscaster? It could be 1 of 50 different Fender guitars. No thanks. I'll pass if you can't even list a guitar with the right info. Smdh. People really need to get away from using that made up word.
@@JC-11111 Uh huh...😐 So credit where credit is due. You are correct on the spelling. Its Squier not Squire. Everything else is piss and vinegar on here. If "Partscaster" isn't a REAL term in your world view, how come there is a section Reverb for them? Why do professional musicians refer to put together guitars as Partscasters? Why do I see that word in professional guitar publications? Why are parted together guitars in music shops sold as Partscasters? Refer to your guitars any way you like but just because you have a very narrow view of your guitar world does not mean everyone else does. I create guitars that are not sold off the wall in the final configuration. So I found a way to mix parts to get EXACTLY what I want. Not sure why you have a problem with that but for some reason you do. I will tell you this, I would say a "Modified" guitar is like my Ibanez in my pic. It has a Vintage Vibrato, roller bridge, ans Gretschbuckers in it. THAT is modified. My OG Tele in my pic, that's a Partscaster. I bought it as a Partscaster and further modified it. It is not offered by Fender or any knockoff. It is guitar put together from parts left over by several owners. I have lots of guitars, some are stock, most are modded and some are Partscasters. If I sold it "Partscaster" would be appropriate if I did not take it apart and sell it for individual parts. Also lots of professional guitars are Partscasters, Rivers Cuomo from Weezer plays them, Eddie Van Halen's original guitars qualify as Partscasters. Perhaps the most famous is Eric Clapton's Blackie. Well if works for them, why not do it for yourself?
@@davidwoods358 I realize. GuitarFetish is cheaper than even this one though, so I thought it'd be cool to show them both as "if you want to pay more" and "if you want to pay less" comparisons.
Wow. Warmoth would charge at least $500 for a Daphne Blue finished body-just the body. Crazy that you could nab one on Alegree for 100 pounds. It would be cheaper than $500 to pay the exchange rate and have it shipped to the US from the UK.
Yeah, Warmoth is pretty much never worth it if you want something relatively simple, the place they shine is if you want options that aren't commonly available.
Warmoth is only worth it for the necks or if you want a custom body in a natural finish with exotic wood etc. Any body from the showcase just isn't worth it for us in the UK.
That headstock is killer!!! I'm a big fan of the big Fender headstock but that one you come up with I really like 😎👍 The Guitar look great!! greetings from Germany
Yea but he didn't have to order anything this way. He was able to finish the job without having to wait a month for conversion bushings. Plus the way Colin did it is the correct way.
Man, you know there's 3 types of bushing for the tunners, usually tend to come with the 8,9 mm but you can find easily 10,2 mm and also small 8.2 mm, around 1 euro x 6 of them, next time ;) seems a fun guitar, great chanel Colin!

Hell yea!!!So cool man...Beautiful Job!!!Nice throwing in "basketcase" the color does look like Bj's fernandes.🤘👍
Absolutely a cool partscaster!
That headstock is class
Digging the P90 Strat! 😎🎸
Can't wait!
Absolutely adore the series! Colin is the guy to have quite a chat with
nice job. looks cool
Squier.
It's *Squier.* It's right there on the headstock. You say you own one or more. So how do you make such a mistake? You see that headstock over & over & over but still can't spell it correctly. 🤷
And partscasters aren't a thing.
@@JC-11111 Exactly! It's NOT a baby snapper! (Squire)

Uh huh...😐
So credit where credit is due.
Fender made my P-90 Strat. It’s called a Noventa! Awesome!
I own a Vintage V6P with 3 Stacked Wilkinson P90's really unique, all Wilkinson Parts with a 5 way switch, those P90's sound nice,
Love the headstock design you went with, very cool.
Sweet I love the axe from the grave Videos
Cream switch tip forever! Looks awesome!
A comparison between this and a warmoth of similar spec would be cool given the price difference
and a really cheap one from GuitarFetish too. Not sure if that's too conducive to shipping to the UK though. :P
@@NeoRichardBlake The Warmoth would be (way way) more.
@@davidwoods358 I realize. GuitarFetish is cheaper than even this one though, so I thought it'd be cool to show them both as "if you want to pay more" and "if you want to pay less" comparisons.
Love it, fair play man!
Wow. Warmoth would charge at least $500 for a Daphne Blue finished body-just the body. Crazy that you could nab one on Alegree for 100 pounds. It would be cheaper than $500 to pay the exchange rate and have it shipped to the US from the UK.
I know man.Thats what I was thinking cause Warmoth is crazy expensive!!!
Yeah, Warmoth is pretty much never worth it if you want something relatively simple, the place they shine is if you want options that aren't commonly available.
@@RoboNarples-et6ky Warmoth: "When you want all the cost of an American Strat with none of the resale value."
Warmoth is only worth it for the necks or if you want a custom body in a natural finish with exotic wood etc. Any body from the showcase just isn't worth it for us in the UK.
the best part of partscasters is creative electronics. My Fenderbird is a triple humbucker active bass.
Watching you work was rather enjoyable...and inspiring.
She came out great. Congratulations and thanks for the video.
Really diggin' that headstock shape with the insert/veneer and your logo 🤘 big love for P90s too ✌️😁👍
This is so cool! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Sounds great!
Now I want a strat with P90’s!
Ok i admit Collin you're a genius!
You can buy conversion bushings for 10mm headstock tuner holes that go to the smaller 8mm holes.
Love this! Please do more!!
Awesome! You make this stuff super interesting. Now I want to build my own, you know, my way.
Those p90s sound pretty tasty. I am gonna get me a pair. And yes the Daphne blue is sexy.
I just ordered an agile strat with p90's. I hope it sounds this good!
Love the headstock!
That headstock is killer!!! I'm a big fan of the big Fender headstock but that one you come up with I really like 😎👍
The Guitar look great!!
greetings from Germany
Aaaaand the Daphne Blue body is out of stock. Perfect.
I'm digging them tunes.
Nice parts caster man, sounds good 👍
Becoming one of my favorite series...should be on pbs in the states🤘
Bridge problem aside, you did a fantastic job on this build!
They make ferrules for larger holes and kluson style tuners.
I got lucky and managed to find a p90 hardtail partscaster on reverb for almost 400 right when the pandemic started. I love the configuration
This is my next project. Always been fascinated with the P90 sound. I'll be going through Guitar Fetish with most of the parts.
Nice build, great work!
Awesome build great sounds enjoyed the video thx for sharing.
Did you get the Wilkinson Bridge with the "locking saddles" design - screws keep the strings from slipping? If you did, please provide a link. Thanks
