@@GoNorthJapan Next time I'm in Japan I'll be looking into doing a lot more hiking as I did a bit the last time I was there. I could well be looking you up next Autumn. The more adventurous the better!
Great video Quinlan and thanks for guiding us up (and down) the mountain! Really appreciated how much preparation you had for us. Hopefully we can fit in another hike this winter! ✌️
Okay my favs: 1) Quinlan using a gentle nature documentary voice filming Chris at a distance. Grizzly vibe 2) panning away at 3:30 when Chris is ranting, lmaaoo not giving af what he’s going on about 3) surprise introductions at 5:00 during a super steep slope and they’re gasping, hahaha
I genuinely wouldn't have been able to go down the mountain without you 😅 Thank you so much for taking us around and making my first time at Iwate a memorable one! 🤗
I've never laughed so hard at one of your videos! Both when I found out Chris had actually tricked me with his impression of you in the few seconds between starting the video and tilting the video to landscape, and when you said he'd fallen into your trap! 😆 It was also interesting seeing people be guided, and I hope Chris gets his hiking boot situation in order soon (and some quick-drying trousers; I know what I'd gift him for Christmas if I were family!). And if I ever do this myself, I hope I can bring or hire trekking poles 😁
Yeah, it was great fun! I have been guiding people recently have hired me directly. I will try to make a video of doing that next time perhaps! And yeah- I will be more insistent that he actually get hiking boots (and pants) before our next excursion, hopefully next spring or summer.
Thank you for showing what these mountains could be like for a more "average" climber -- your guide experience is invaluable, quality gear is important, and the way down is no joke! (and Chris's Midwestern accent isn't too bad, wow)
Yeah- I did advise Chris to wear proper hiking boots and to tell everyone else to do the same. I also mentioned hiking pants instead of jeans, but... yeah.. he made it with his "gear" lol. It was tons of fun, though I still am not sure on the accent, hahaha.
It was great seeing you in your element showing people around a favourite place; that great mix of excitement, enthusiasm, pride for the places you love and nervousness about whether or not they'll enjoy it as much as you hope they would. The air looked so clear up there, the colours and view looked so crisp. Gorgeous!
It's not shown in the video, but at the beginning I was in full-on guide mode. I was pointing out plant life, explaining the relationship between certain seasonal plants and the indigenous peoples, explained about bears, local names of the area, etc. I love guiding people there, and I was a bit nervous about them liking it half as much as I did. It all turned out well!
@@GoNorthJapan That sounds like such a fantastic tour of the area! The bit about the relationships between seasonal plants and the indigenous people, as well as all the local names are totally my kind of things. Your passion for where you live is beautiful and super inspiring.
Oh, I didn't hear his podcast account of this hike! I'll have to find it. Also can't wait to see Chris's video of the hike in December. He did some crazy boxing practice near the top that I didn't show in this one...
@@GoNorthJapan He mentioned hiking a mountain but not any specifics so I assumed hiking a mountain north of Japan would translate to at least one video here. :) I would not been able to tell if he might have been referring to another hike.
Quinlan, I always enjoy your content but I didn't realise until this video that there was something missing. That landscape was rugged and harsh and beautiful. I know you say that it was a season where there isn't a lot going on, but this was a new adventure. A visually stunning one. More like this if you have the time. And thank you as always.
Could you elaborate a bit more on what you mean? You mean the lack of leaves made it more rugged and beautiful? Or that landscape itself? I'm just trying to think of how I could make more like that.. I have done that location probably 4 times before.. but yeah- with leaves on the trees. Thanks!
@@GoNorthJapan Sorry sir, I'm trying to put my finger on the difference. It may have just been how I was at the time of watching it, but there was something about this video that really mad it 'pop' visually. From the yellows in the waterfall to the rusty red in the mud to the full spectrum of colours and textures in the slopes around the valley itself. Not to mention the muddy mess of the forest The foliage seemed dusty somehow. I don't know if you have a new camera or lens or it's something that may have been done in editing? For instance, the slope the you were climbing and descending appeared crumbling and fractured and very dangerous. It had never seemed that way before. Up till now the valley has always seemed solid and stable. The lighting seemed stronger, more yellow. This video really highlighted the 'active' nature of the volcanic area. Actually the video itself made the valley feel very steep and narrow and claustrophobic. I had always thought of it as wide and panoramic and safe. Something in the way you shot really highlighted how intense a climb it actually is. I got a real sense of the incline and how hard it would be to manage. The whole video made me feel more like an active participant than an observer. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything as it sounds like a criticism and that was not my intention. I enjoy all your works. I hate to say it Quinlan, but Chris did quite good David Attenborough version of you 😂 Very cool to see Nick there too. I was hoping you'd end up with a burger. 😂 What a great hike too!
Ahahaha, ok, I'll have to take everyone's word that it was an accurate imitation. Yeah- there was no time that day for a burger, but going to have Nick and Angela come back up in January or February and make a few videos eating around Morioka!
This was one of your more entertaining and revealing videos. Made me laugh a lot! AND it also is apparent that what Quinlan considers easy and fun, is pretty challenging (death defying!) by others! I live in Oregon, USA so hiking is a part of living here. Now I want to bring my hiking backpack when I return to Japan instead of my travel backpack! Which is making me rethink all of my packing because I am a carry-on only kind of traveler. Shoe-wise, would my Nike Pegasus trail with Goretex likely be ok? They are perfect for every day wear or keeping in the car for the random drive off hike and I don't usually wear normal hiking shoes...I guess the best way to find out is for me to pick a few hikes here with rocky inclines. :) I have some Wildhorse shoes as well - I used to always hike in Frees which is of course, awful to anyone wanting any support or grip whatsoever and the amount of rocks that got stuck in them was insanity but I apparently enjoyed the challenge. I've also done hikes in tall hunter rain boots so really, I just make up my own rules! Moment of silence for my ankles. Thanks for sharing this video! Really making me rethink future visits!
Yeah- I think any Goretext trail shoes are fine.. maybe add gaiters if you have them to avoid getting volcanic rock in them and to keep your pants a bit cleaner. Definitely think it's worth doing some hiking while you're in Japan!
You know, the funny thing is, I have a big fear of heights, but mountains don't seem to trigger it. A sheer cliffside would, but a very slanted mountain side wouldn't. If anything, I'd know I could slide down on my feet if necessary. The interesting part is that climbing a small tree would trigger my heights worse. Not sure why. Just not bothered if I'm not off the ground.
Also I know this sound dumb, obviously you don't wanna slide down a steep mountain uncontrollably, not saying it would be a good thing, just that it wouldn't scare me doing it..

Yeah- I think any Goretext trail shoes are fine.. maybe add gaiters if you have them to avoid getting volcanic rock in them and to keep your pants a bit cleaner.
Definitely think it's worth doing some hiking while you're in Japan!
@@GoNorthJapan thanks for the tip, that's a good idea. Definitely need to work some hike time into my next plan!
I am also a Quinlan, from one to another, hello! (North UK based)
Well hello, fellow Quinlan!
Iwould love this to be a game and i would choose Chris's character - wrong shoes and all. haha!
Beautiful. Amazed Chris made it. He seems like the kind of guy who'd need helicopter rescue :P
Ahahaha, he's actually rather fit now after all that training he's been doing!
This is definitely not the hiking tracks for first timer, but it's beautiful regardless!
True! I was perhaps being a bit irresponsible taking them up there, but it was basically fine!
@@GoNorthJapan yeah, i am glad things worked out
The second I saw the photo of the bear sign Chis posted, I knew he was with you 🤣
Hahaha, sadly we didn't see any bears. I will try to introduce him to one next year...
@@GoNorthJapan Should have him go off into the woods with the bells just to have him practice ;)
Chris Broad not wear hiking boots?
Yeah.. I did tell him to buy some well in advance.. lol
Actually I'm pretty similar in that regard. Slopes are far less intimidating that sheer cliffs, even though they can be nearly as dangerous.
why doesnt this guy get the views he deserves .. such an amazing channel and an even more amazing person
Thanks!
