Surprised nobody mentioned this in the comments, but a common fix to keep the original slot is to bend the pins back closer to their original position so they get a better connection to the cartridge. It's tedious since there's a lot of pins but it works a lot of the time in issues where there's corruption or no booting.
There are third party slots that are just trays that have no moving parts, but this one is like the original, I just choose not to press it down because it's not needed.
