I remember being in the audience for this concert, being probably 12 and in the 6th or 7th grade. Seeing Dave play live was what made me know I wanted to pursue music for a living.
Totally awesome. Dave Steinmeyer is a great player and leader, Brian MacDonald is a true "monster" on lead trumpet, and the band is tighter than two coats of paint. Overall very enjoyable!!
A few years ago I sat in with a reading band. I was asked to play the solo chair. I had solo after Dave for 2 hours. It was a miserable night. Lol. No matter how good I sound, he’s Dave steinmeyer.
This is so fine, so sophisticated, so filled with energy and explosive expression, written by legendary Jazz pianist Chick Corea, this tune is perfect for a great smokin' big band like the Airmen of Note....who are absolutely flying high while never even leaving the ground !!
I had the great honor to sub in the Airmen of Note three different times and I have played with Vaughn Nark, Rick Lillard, and Rick Whitehead many times. This band is great and I really love the soprano player. I only know about five guys in this band. Dudley and I went to the same community college in Florida, several years apart, and he is a great guy too. Of course what can you say about Steinmeyer. One of the best.
I was blessed to be able to put together a Big Band made up of guys from the Note, Army Blues, Navy Commodores, other military players and music professionals. It's Swing Machine Big Band, in the DC area. They're all so wonderful to work with. Incredible talent and such nice guys. Pete BarenBregge is our music director. Rick Lillard moved to WV a couple of years ago, and we miss him terribly. He was the Best Man at my wedding, and played Steinmeyer's version of "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" as a solo for our "dance". Incredible.
Joe and Tyler have GIGANTIC ears, in addition to playing with absolutely no limits. And thank you Mr. Stein-the-man for staying in unbelievable shape!!!! And yay, lead trumpet!!!!
Bro that bass trombone is SOLID, I’ve watched this probably 1000 times now, this is one of our songs for contest, I’m hoping to get a sound like his one day, considering I also play bass bone
I love this song. Trombone is a beast. But I do have to say the lead trumpet(s) are killing it. Ive heard of taking things up, but you guys did it so well. I'm Jelly. I could never play lead as well as you guys.
Thank you for posting this, Ironically, I am more of a classical trumpet player, but Dave Steinmeyer has been my favorite Trombonist and I've always enjoyed listening to him when he was the director of the Airmen.
Wow, what a thrilling performance. I first leaned about and heard the AON w/ Dave Steinmeyer as leader in about 1988. They were performing before a packed house in the beautiful setting of Mount Gretna, PA -- in the tented amphitheater. I didn't know what to expect when the family and I went. The effect on me was the same as if a spaceship had landed -- awed. By all means, try to get the "Bone Voyage" album. This was to be Steinmeyer's retirement present from the AF.
Such an amazing player!! For Dave Steinmeyer fans, I would HIGHLY recommend his album 'Bone Voyage' It's the airmen of note but the trombone section is featured in all of the songs and some featuring Dave soloing. It is INCREDIBLE!!!
Nunca vi nada igual ainda se tratando de trombonista, pois o trombone é um instrumento que pela sua natureza ja é´muito dificil agora imagine fora de sua extensao , esse cara é´o cara mesmo , parabens.
You know, I think your right, they got carried away trying to out do each other in range, but Steinmeyer can & does hit those notes dead on without screeching, elsewhere on the recordings on UTube. I plan to buy some of his records. You want mainline jazz, stick w people like Vincent Gardner, Steve Turre, Jay J. Johnson, Frank Rosolino, Carl Fontana, Trummy Young, Bill Watrous. If you want ultimate, shear beauty in tone, range & emotionally romantic playing to the max, Steinmeyer is the man!
Incredibly fine playing gentlemen..BOTH The gentleman on trombone are golden especially in light of the fact one has been retired for 20 years BUT I am sure not retired from music having those kind of chops.....Surprised you did not mention the great AL Jarreau with his great version of SPAIN.
I believe the "Go Jackson" callout after acknowledging Steinmeyer is a reference to Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, FL, where Steinmeyer was a classmate. Yes, the band kids saluted after he walked past in the halls. He was already two sigma out beyond his age peers.
Atuando o antigo lider do Airmen of Note o lendário trombonista Dave Steinmeyer. Além dele tocando no soprano sax está Tyler Kuebler o atual lider, trombonista e diretor musical é Joe Jackson. (TRAD)Libeni.
The lead trumpet is SO CLEAN, i can only dream of achieving such a controlled high range.
Yes! Glad to see someone recent is watching this video lol
Brian Macdonald on lead I believe. So clean, so powerful, so controlled, most importantly so musical.
@@biencjBrian MacDonald is probably one of the best lead trumpets to ever live. Kinda crazy.
@@jacobrippethat not recent enough 😂😂
Yep, it's Brian McDonald, the cleanest trumpet I have ever heard

@@oceanicharmonia2223 keep going dude, you rock!
I play trumpet and I know how difficult it is to get that high and he did it on a trombone. Wow. Kudos. They're amazing.
Totally awesome. Dave Steinmeyer is a great player and leader, Brian MacDonald is a true "monster" on lead trumpet, and the band is tighter than two coats of paint. Overall very enjoyable!!
Stealin "two coats of paint". LOL.

The only time a trombonist has ever been applauded

3:15 you can see the tenor player casually swap out his reed 😂😂 when you realize you have the wrong reed on
Funny, didn’t notice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Steinmeyer keeping up with the kid. Amazing solos. loved how they played off of eachother. Wish I was there!
I'm from Eustis, Florida. I am so psyched to be working with him this week! Thanks for coming to our high school jazz band!
Bro that bass trombone is SOLID, I’ve watched this probably 1000 times now, this is one of our songs for contest, I’m hoping to get a sound like his one day, considering I also play bass bone
Delicious! "100% Caravan movie sound", I LOVE it !
Dave Steinmeyer is such an awesome dude. I had a wonderful time playing with him in UNF's JE1 for a couple of years...
I was blessed with the extreme pressure of sitting 2nd next to Dave last weekend. What an honor for me! And a hoot on the stand:)
I'm a high school classmate of Steinmeyer. The band kids were in awe already.
BBBBB wow! today it takes 2 people to play like that. A trombonist and an air traffic controller!!! :)
I confirm. I am both and I can't play like that!
I remember when Bill Watrous first did this arrangement back in '75 with his Manhattan Wildlife Refuge group. It's great!
You still got it Dave..so great.. boy Joe you sure carry on that North Texas sound…angular!
I got sit next to this great man while he played this tune with the SCC jazz band reunion. Honor of my life!!
my teacher send this to me and it really amazed me……it is sooooooooo great!dreamt to be a trombonist like him!
I've been fortunate enough to hear Steinmeyer live and he is absolutely amazing... Love his playing!
wow... a true master of control in the upper register.
I just realized this was 14 years ago 😭😭
the playing from the soprano, dave s, and the lead trumpet here are almost robotically good, it's UNREAL!
Look at this sliding, so relaxed and smooth. Dave is tha bro
5:34 so smooth 🔥
Dave, a true musician. You will always will be remembered as one of the greats!
Dave is a BOSS!!! The man is simply magic to the trombone. I am a trumpet player, but mana o'man, he was something else!!
Woasoooo soo Amazing ❤
Clean and refreshing like a sweet wine Trombone and band.
Great playing Dave! Loved the double Bb's in 3!

Tyler, great hearing you again! my, how you have grown!!
Never get tired of listening to this!
Mr. Steinmeyer is incredible. He reminds me of an Oklahoma legend: Doctor Kent Kidwell.
HOLY SHIT ,YOU KNOW DOCTOR KIDWELL
I got my tone from listening to him one my favorite players. Wish I had is range control!!
Great sound!!!!
This? Right here? This is why I fell in love with the trombone
Totally awesome and wonderful. All Stars Music. Thanks you for share!
Good job guys! You rock in the air, land, sea and on stage!!! Super cool stuff there! I love that sax solo!
Some really great playing there! Thanks so much for making my day😊

Oh Boy this arrangement is very striking & the band really moved it along but the three soloist stole the show. Great piece of jazz
Isn’t this the same arrangement from Bill Watrous’ “Manhattan Wildlife Refuge” album? Love it 🔥
Yes.
Yes--by John LaBarbera, brother of saxophonist Pat and drummer Joe.

Screaming tight, very articulate. Tiny mouthpiece. I use a 6 1/2 al Bach on my April 2 1912 Olds. On my 4b I use a 12 Bach.

Oh My god. This is i listen it first time.wonderful right?
It's just awesome! Mega cool! Very beautiful music and brilliant trombonist! Sound - from God!
I don't know why, but I found it funny that, when the soprano sax solo started, the guy just went back and drank a bottle of water.
So cool🎉🎉
Fantastic!
that articulation on the melody is so hip
