-- How To Improve Your Horse Riding Position | Pelvic Balance --
When it comes to how to improve your horse riding position for better balance and stability in the saddle, most equestrian riders wait until they’re actually riding the horse to work on it.
But this is a huge mistake!
Here is what fifteen years of clinical practice has taught me: humans do not move symmetrically.
We have bad habits and learned movement patterns. We compensate for old injuries and guard areas of our bodies where we have had pain.
This is all happening subconsciously, of course.
    Here’s the thing:
If you’re crooked OFF the horse, you’re certainly going to be crooked ON the horse!
The time to work on your seat is before you actually get into the saddle because if you can’t find balance on stable ground, you’re not going to have the ability to ride without interfering with your horse's performance -- or worse, causing him pain!
And just riding a lot won’t necessarily fix the problem either.
I’m not going to deep dive into the neurology of how your body develops movement compensations here because there’s just not room.
But, suffice it to say that you sort of have to teach your brain where your body is and how it can move in order for it to have access to balance and coordination while you’re doing something that demands a lot out of you like riding.
In fact, professional NFL athletes have specific coaches that they work with not on technique, not on strength, but just to be able to move better and with greater efficiency.
That alone bolsters their performance, and quite likely reduces the incidence of injuries as well.
Equestrian riders are athletes, too, and like every good athlete, we have to cross train.
This video shows you how to improve your horse riding position whether it’s for dressage, eventing, show jumping or endurance. You will have better stability in the saddle -- and as a bonus, less lower back pain from riding!

Hey Sukie, I think your following would Greatly benefit from a " back in the saddle" series!! These core mobility issues/solutions apply to pretty much every kind of horse we ride. Thanks so much, it may sound simple but finding the root of the problem is the hope that sadly many never discover. You do it so well with your unique experience. Thanks again!

Since my journey with you began with helping my horse release tension in his body through your sessions his balance has improved over time which made my rides more in tune or aware of what I was doing. I could feel when we we in harmony with each other and when I was getting in his way. I explained how I was having difficulty with my left lead canter. You watched me ride a noticed that I was lifting my right hip out of the saddle and simultaneously taking my right leg off his side. Through working with the wobble board utilizing specific exercises (from your UA-cam video) I have found my sits bones and can now control my pelvic rotation in both directions on the board without it clunking on the floor as I move around in a circular fashion. I have reached a level of awareness in my body, although not always second nature, that is now helping my horse stay in balance instead of throwing him off balance. I am looking forward to the exercises in this video that will enhance the building blocks of my foundation. These methods are not overnight fixes but require dedication and consistency. So worth the effort if you want to be a true dance partner to your horse. Thank you Sukie .

OMG, I just found your channel via another video on polyvagal theory. I'm a former equine body worker and sports journalist for the FEI. Meant to be lol. I haven't been riding recently because of pain, but I'm hoping some of your techniques and suggestions can change that.

Sorry but when you say to circle your pelvis, do you mean to still keep a neutral spine? Keep some of the arch or push it down on the mat? Thank you

For the ladies out there: if you don't have a horse, practice on your man.
