-- Somatic Meditation For Chronic Pain --
Chronic pain is one of the most frustrating conditions a person can encounter in their life.
The fact is, our medical system is poorly equipped to diagnose and treat chronic pain.
    Why?
Well, you might think it has to do with a lack of research, or maybe that we don’t have the right tools and technology.
Or maybe doctors can’t treat chronic pain because there simply isn’t a solution -- chronic pain is just a part of everybody’s life, especially as we all get older.
    But actually…
Our medical system does poorly with chronic pain not because we don’t have the right resources, but because of our world view.
    You see, worldview is EVERYTHING.
How you see a problem determines how you go about fixing it.
And unfortunately, our medical system sees pain -- chronic or otherwise -- as a “body problem.”
i.e. something is broken at the body level.
Your muscles are too tight… so they prescribe muscle relaxers.
Your nerves are inflamed… so they prescribe painkillers.
Your spine is crooked… so they do surgery to fix it.
    The problem is…
Most cases of pain -- lower back pain, in particular -- are “non-specific,” meaning not connected to any diagnosable disease or pathology.
According to spinal surgeon Dr. David Hanscom, doctors actually can only pinpoint the cause of pain about 15% of the time.
That means that 85% of pain cases are idiopathic -- we have no idea what’s causing them.
Of course, this is because, like I said, doctors are looking at the BODY for answers, instead of considering the NERVOUS SYSTEM.
It turns out that stress stored in your nervous system not only causes pain, but can make you more sensitive to pain signals.
    Which means…
The more pain you have, the more pain you feel.
This awful loop just keeps happening -- UNLESS you do something to disrupt it.
That’s where somatic meditation comes in.
Somatic meditation -- unlike traditional forms of mindfulness meditation -- focuses on sensory awareness in your body.
This disrupts pain signals by sending what’s called “non-nociceptive data” to your brain -- information that says “it’s safe to move here.”
When done frequently, somatic meditation effectively calms your nervous system, healing stress and trauma that has resulted from accidents, injuries and emotional shock.
The result is less pain and tension in your body -- but also reduced stress and anxiety overall.
Check out this guided somatic meditation for chronic pain to start your journey toward pain relief and healing at the nervous system level.
Be sure and leave me a comment to let me know how you felt after doing this meditation!

I've been in extreme pain all day from even before I woke up....even in my dreaming. The pain just kept increasing. I tried three other meditation for pain videos only to feel annoyed by the way they told me to accept it, thank it, blah blah blah. Then I found your video....everything you said resonated true with me, so I listened and followed. I'm so glad I did. When I started, the pain was an 8.5...now it's a 2! I'm so GRATEFUL for you and your GOOD WORK. You made a difference in my world. I plan to watch more of your videos and will let my therapist know about you, as we've started discussing the value of polyvagal exercises, trauma stored in the body, and mind-body connection overall.

Thanks for recommending the Somatic Meditation to me, Sukie! This was very helpful, and I will try it on my own next time, now that I know the instructions. Something you said really struck me, which is how much am I focusing on "the story". I realized that my story is now that "I am now an injured person, with pain", and that is communicating to my subconscious a very powerful message, which is NOT what I want to take on as my reality! Interestingly, I have been participating in an online Buddhist retreat with a wise teacher, and he was just talking about this the other day, about how we have "the story" always running in the background of our mind, and how this can lead us to believe in the permanence of things. But in reality, everything is IMPERMANENT, always changing continuously. So with that, I want to offer to my mind the impermanence of the pain I am experiencing.

I have tried so many types of meditation for chronic pain over a 25 year period. The struggle has always been how do you focus on your body and bring attention to it when it hurts. Your meditation and using other senses to draw attention away from the body gave me space enough to come back to it, breathe and then I totally noticed a shift in how I experienced pain afterwards. This is so helpful!!! Thank you!

Very helpful. Thank you. I don't think of myself as having chronic pain, but my left side, especially my shoulder, is stubbornly tense, something I've noticed for many years without being able to do much about it. Right now, after doing this once, it has loosened up nicely, freeing up my breathing. Will certainly be trying this again when I'm less tired, as I was drifting off a bit this time.

And eating triggers my left leg nerve sensations it drives me mad. I was worried it's perminant damage and what if my body can't fix that sort of damage. So I've turned to meditation or trying to reset my nerve.

Can be a difference between Expectations and Reality that makes the Neuroception activate the Stress Mode to deal with the present situation (real or imagined). Every physiological behavior is a symptom of a cause, and this cause is usually the interpretation of the Nervous System as potential Threat. Somatic Meditation is also the solution to become Aware, change the Thoughts/Beliefs associated with a certain trigger (situation, person), and shut down the Stress Response and come back to Safety (Safety = Healing).

I felt a shift/struggle between I think my mind and my spirit. In my head it felt like the upper half was pulling to the right and just beneath that a very strong pull to the left. It wasn't felt physically and this is the best way I can describe it. I also felt slightly dizzy in a sense. Any thoughts on this?

Hi Sukie! I had scarring on my intercostals and have done a lot of work towards it over the years. I’m left with tight fascia in one area. Any other modalities you like for the intercostals? Would you recommend cupping or graston for this area? Finally, should also be doing breathing exercises that strengthen this area of the muscle? Thank you so much for your time

I had great results with Graston work for an injured shoulder. I tried so many other things - accupuncture, ultrasound therapy, chirpractor, massage etc - nothing worked. My chiropractor suggested a colleague who did Graston and that was the magic that was required! Best of luck.

I kept having tears well up during this practice. I tried not to create a story about that. Is this normal? I also sighed etc a lot which felt good but I’m wondering about the release via ‘tears’ or emotion? Can you shed light on this or point me to a resource? Thanks so much

Does this apply for non pain/tension symptoms like Irritable bowel syndrome? I mean I don’t have symptoms unless I eat certain foods… thank you🙏💕

Hi Sukie, I have an upcoming dental appointment and local anesthetic makes me sick. I need multiple restorations and root canals. The dentist has agreed to do it without any numbing whatsoever, although he is trying to convince me not to. No numbing is what I feel is best for me and I want to use meditation as my sole means of pain tolerance. Any advice on what I should concentrate on and what imagery would work best, especially if a nerve is hit and a searing jolt of pain is felt?

I would advise very strongly against doing this without extensive coaching by a hypnotherapist rather than pure meditation. For the large majority of people you will most likely not enough progress in a few weeks on your own. I am a layman, and this is possible to do, but ill advised to do so on your own. If only for the fact that really deep trance is much much easier to achieve through hypnosis by others rather than by self training. Incidentally meditation and hypnosis do have similarities, though there are differences.

Thank you for this meditation! I am committing to doing this meditation daily for 4 weeks. When you had us turn our heads to the left and right but gaze with our eyes in the opposite direction, two things occurred- i got nauseous (adjusted my gaze to be not as far in the opposite direction and i felt a heaviness in my lower chest that felt like sadness. Is this surprising to you or a part of this process?

I have Somatic with severe health anxiety.. I become so focused on a pain or sensation and become fixated that it is a terminal illness.. I have been like this my entire life, it’s ruined my life and am unable to enjoy and live in the moment ..

The best therapy meditation under 3 minute I found was in a youtube video where the therapist would say to the patient who was suffering and had a tremendous anxiety concerning being buried alive in a box. The therapist said "Stop it. Just stop it or I'll bury you alive in a box". 😅

Find a balloon, or flowers to focus on, and find a soothing toy or sensation, like warm/cool, or something squishy. It can help you create the sense of some ok spot to rest on, where you may not be able to actually find one on your body
