I think the engine is AL 6.65 Six Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Diesel Engine which is the Licensed version of British Leyland 0.400 Six Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Diesel Engine which itself is the upgraded version of Leyland 350 comet Series Six Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Diesel Engine dating back to early 1950s

I always tried to get the ticket of Ashok Leyland buses of the Assam State Transport Corporation whereas there wer even more number of Tata buses for the sheer music of Ashok Leyland engine exhaust note. Nowadays that exhaust note is found in UA-cam only (courtesy Hino engine).
