I remember growing up in the 1970s and 80s and travelling in MSRTC buses from Mumbai to Pune and Konkan. I would vocalise the Leyland sounds right from idling to low gear hill climbs. My favourite part was the ghats from Khopoli to Khandala. Not to be found anymore with modern engines.
One will not be able to get to hear that kind of roaring sound from Japanese Hino Engine,this quality is available only in British Leyland Engine and to some extent German Mercedes Benz Engine.
I think the engine of this truck is AL 6.65 Six Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Diesel Engine which is the derived or licensed version of British Leyland 0.400 Six Cylinder Naturally Aspirated Diesel Engine whose technology dates back to 1950s.
Sounds of comets or comet supers were somewhat similar to that of Cheetahs but vikings were characterised by initiation of lighter sounds, then sort of deep humming sound at a particular RPM followed by again lighter sounds especially when one is near the exhausts. But everything is gone now. All models do exist but that lighter deeper lighter concept is not there now-a-days. All are under one umbrella but variation of powers, capacities do definitely exists.

It was by 2002 that Ashok Leyland introduced Hino Engine in their Trucks.Upto 2002 AL 6.65 Engine BS1was available on option basis.From 2003 year the AL 6.65 engined Ashok Leyland Trucks and Ashok Leyland Buses became extinct only Hino Engined Ashok Leyland Buses and Trucks were available.
And also According to uploader of this video this Ashok Leyland Truck is of 1997 model,and Hino Engined Ashok Leyland Truck availability was out of question during 1997.
