Apparently they are called Retaining rings instead of snap rings. They do make a tool for external retaining rings. But what about internal retaining rings? I have a couple inside the final drive, that need to come out to remove the bearing races.
ABOUT THOSE CLIPS. You should talk to Pete from Just a few acres farm. He just had a video dealing with them. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing your life with us 🇺🇸
Love your videos. What you are doing can not be done quick. Take your time. Have the right tools for the job, and clean parts with detail. Looking forward in the next steps. Blessings on you guys🙂

Snap on Tools have snap ring pliers for those retaining clips, they are expensive but always get the job done. I would use the same type of clips, they are stronger, so I would use the same as the old. I have faith in you, you’ll get it done.
I think those rings are called circlips, and there are special pliers for them. With that tool, they are very easy to remove and install. They work similar to your snap ring pliers except instead of the little round pins, they have flat duckbill jaws, and they expand when you squeeze the pliers.
Go to Amazon and look up 'lock ring pliers'. Kinda look like a duck bill with knurling on the outside edges to catch the pointy part of the ring. Mine are snap-on, and I would get a pretty good pair. Them are beefy lock rings. And NO, do not replace them with snap rings. They are beefy on purpose. Good vid. I need that air-assist press. :)
At the very start you did away with the old argument of starting the fire from the bottom....or the top. You light it from the middle, can't go wrong with that. LOL 🔥🔥
First, DO NOT replace the lock ring with a snap ring. (the one with the holes to release) The width of the lock ring is there as a spacer as well as a keeper. Get the BEST lock ring pliers you can afford. (It makes a DIFFERENCE!) Buy (If possible) new lock rings because the sharpness of the point will make it easier to install. (Will grab lock ring pliers better) This is first hand experience. Older Jeep transmission disassembly. Tried for hours and multiple times. A good friend of mine (May he rest in peace) drove by and checked out what I was doing. He immediately went to his house and brought a Snap-On snap ring plier and I took it off in two tries! Yes, I am a believer!! Great video!
Evan, they do make pliers for that type of snap rings. Amazon even has a Knipex brand available. Look up circlip pliers or horseshoe washer clip pliers which I used working on gearboxes on coal mining equipment. I enjoy your channel and my wife and I have been watching since the beginning of your channel. Good luck,James.
Hey Evan. Try drilling small holes on the snap rings to fit your circlip pliers, and you can re-use the old ones. The round ones. Put them back in and forget about the next guy.
KD TOOL 2534 External retaining ring pliers. They work pretty good Sometimes you still have to get a screwdriver behind it while you spreading it with the pliers.
Evan another great video. Yes they do make pliers to remove those. They are called retaining ring pliers. They are handy for all kinds of other things to. You don't want to put snap rings in their place. They also make internal ones.
I just turned 70 and I've been around this type of work most of my life. I think I've seen the tool you need used two different times in my life. And I've never owned a pair of them.
Even my grandparents' home became very dry from using their wood stove to heat their home drafty single-wall exterior. Humidity was very low they kept a pot of water on it when it was burning! your shop is surely a lot tighter! Have you seen that as future a consideration when heating with wood? Great content!
In a pinch you can use 2 flat blade screwdrivers. Insert both tips in the gap side by side, touching, then lever the screwdriver handles together, pivoting the tips apart. You have to play with length of shafts, thicknesses, etc. but as I do most of my mechanical work on evenings and weekends, necessity is the mother of invention.
They do make a plier for those rings. they have a flat end on both tips and also used in automotive transmission retaining rings. have a pair in my tool box and Snap-on and others sale them.
Evan there are tools to help get those clips off. Craftsman wfx46944 is a small one and Snapon is 700cp and that is a larger one. These are designed to remove the clips that you have
My opinion is that take some RR ties or 4x4 s and place under your press for added height, and a rubber mat at bottom to help eliminate a bearing race dent. Great job and video. Enjoying them all !🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍
Looking good Evan, check at your NAPA store and they should be able to help you out with your (retaining/snap ring) problem. Your press will be one of the best investments in the shop, not used too often but when you need it you'll get the job done safely. Stay safe and keep up the good work. Fred
Evan there is a special tool for those retaining rings they are no longer made. But you can get them on eBay. Craftsman vintage 9"ring pliers p 4735 what you struggled for hours with will take seconds with the these hope this helps
There is a special tool for those clips. They still use them on some equipment. Mine is OTC-714. I don't use it much as I'm retired now. If you can't find some, let me know and I'll send you these ones. They look like flat-billed pliers the open instead of close when you mash the handles. Official name is "Horseshoe Lock Ring Pliers". You can get them at Summit Racing.
Yes, they used to make a snap ring pliers for that kind of snap ring, don't know if they still do, I have a pair that my dad had from back in the day, but I'm sure you can upgrade to the newer snap ring with the holes, really enjoyed watching your videos
Eaton fuller transmissions in the heavy truck applications,, check special tooling or tool kits,, the pliers can be purchased separately,,,, or if you have a Mac tools or matco tools dealer reasonably close check and see if they have one on the truck,,,,
Evan, you’re really getting the “exploded” in the exploded diagram of that D-17! ALL the way down to individual parts. When you’re done, the old beauty will run another 50 years. Good job.
I worked in the Automotive field for over 40 years. they used to make a pliers that were designed to remove the retaining rings. Don't know if they are still being made though. In fact I don't even know if have them yet. I have most of the tools I first bought over 40 years ago. I always bought good tools. Great videos though keep them coming.
There is tool made for that style snap ring. They have flat tips instead the tips for snap rings with holes. I have a pair that I've had for years. I used them for stick shift transmissions.
When I took those out, I'd stick a pair of needle nose pliers [closed] in the gap, then pull the handles away from each other. The trick was to twist them just right to get the ring started out of the groove. Don't expect to get it on the first try if you use this method. Good luck!
The square cut rings use lock ring pliers. They are similar to snap ring pliers, just have regular pliers face pushing outward. On the round clips I would try driving a small center punch under the pin.
Evan In Australia we tend to call those "snap rings" and the ones with holes "circlips" You're correct about them being much sturdier, and if removed and replaced correctly with the flat faced pliers, it is common to reuse them Keep up the good work mate
the way i've taken those type off is with 2 flat screw drivers. one to push straight in under the ring and the 2nd to put in behind the spring clip. need it in a vise or something to hold it steady.. hope this helps.
The snap rings can be reused if they have tension in them when put over the axles and they snap into the axle groove when released. They shouldn’t be reused if they have been over extended when removed. When using the bearing splitter put the bolt section over the press plates. If your pressing wider items the bolt will bend if not supported.
A beautiful flag sign, love it! I do the same as you did with the snap ring that don't have hole, screw drivers or picks. I would change them out to the newer rings with holes, they should be okay, for sure easier to remove. Loved the video, thanks and have a wonderful Sunday!🙂
sockets work great to press out stuff i use then with my big vice to do U- joints one big one small, probably should have buffed the shaft with a drill and wire brush first. as jeff and mark and others said they make a ?duck bill ?set of pliers for the external but internal may have to hook under the tip and then put a pic or tiny strait screwdriver to work it out
use snap ring pliers that are 90 degree the pins are together when the tool is relaxed and when you squeeze the plier the pins spread giving enough room to get a small flat head or o ring pic behind the clip
Many of those round type retainers are spring steel meant to snap out to lock an axle in place once installed. Some have a way to attach a slide hammer to them to remove the axle without removing the spring lock. You have to jerk them out and hammer them in. The spring is designed to collapse just enough to let it past through
Little tip: Draw your shafts and record bearing orientation and part#. and snapring locations. To remove snapring spread at the tips to enlarge diameter and pick at opposite side.
Yes there's a pliers that works well . I know I have a good pair that I most likely pick up at a estate sales or garage sale . I had only used them once ,but it was worth the dollar or less I paid for it . A person was able years ago to buy a bucket full of Great old hand tools for a couple of dollars . A person has to try an justifies do I really need all these tools until then do a job in less time than it takes to find them 🙃 🤔 😅
Spring c rings not sure if you can find the old style or not. They can be replaced with the new style. Use a precision measuring caliper or veneer to measure so you can order the correct size.
Evan put a small flat screwdriver under the face of one side of the retaining ring then lift it slightly and insert a larger flat screwdriver under the part you have lifted up then slide the large screwdriver round and lift the retaining ring free They are usually located in drive shafts and may have one face larger than the other, this creates a wedge and gives them more strength as a retaining clip Yes you should put the same type back on as they are much stronger than the other type of retaining clip As I said it may have a higher face on one side, if you look at them they may not be square and you have to put them back in the correct way.
they make a version of needle nose pliers that have really long thin heads. We use them a bunch in electronics and computer work. two of them (one in each hand) might work out for you in removing them.
Apparently they are called Retaining rings instead of snap rings. They do make a tool for external retaining rings. But what about internal retaining rings? I have a couple inside the final drive, that need to come out to remove the bearing races.
Internal can be a real bear. The “wedge a screwdriver” method will eventually get them, but a 3rd hand is sometimes needed.
@@d6joe yes, an extra hand would be helpful in the process.
You need to punch the rings off. 1 shot. No need to grab. Just clamp the object, and than punch
From my research, I found you need circlip pliers with knurled external tips.... You can check yourself to be sure it's for the same piece as yours
Or maybe that's what you already have...?🤷♀️

That's a cool idea for your coffee pot using the horse shoe.

That's the way I have been doing it lately. Seems to work fine.
When you assemble it put the shafts in the freezer and boil the bearings and they will slide together.
67-565 Armstrong lock ring pliers
I like the white paper behind the sign!
Stanley Proto horseshoe ring pliers j250 at northern tools.
The tool you need is a Matco part # TP 47R OR SOMETHING SIMILAR.
You need transmission lock ring pliers. They have serrated pads to grab the rings. Keep up the good work.
I like the AC D17
What you need is duckbill pliers. Get them at amazon, harbor freight, etc.
I couldn't find them at harbor freight. I ordered some off amazon
Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching!

Stanley Proto J250G Proto 9-Inch Lock Ring Horseshoe Washer Pliers
Evan you have a beautiful shop . You need a black chair rail btw the wood and galvanized to accentuate the wall.
A million little steps and each step is closer to the finished project and a huge sense of accomplishment!!!
I use flat face snap ring pliers when I did my transmission. Keep the old snap rings. White for the stars and black on the words.
Evan that’s a excellent hack with the horseshoe I’m trying it
Horseshoe clip pliers are the tool you need for those clips.
Love the sign. I’ll be hanging an American flag in my shop
Watching the video right now and drinking a cup of coffee
Bought a expander tool for those clips back in 75 when was rebuilding automatic transmissions.
I like the new wall art and the new press. Nice! No clue on the clips, sorry. Great video. Thank you Evan. 👍
Hey Evan. Try drilling small holes on the snap rings to fit your circlip pliers, and you can re-use the old ones. The round ones. Put them back in and forget about the next guy.

Evan there are tools to help get those clips off. Craftsman wfx46944 is a small one and Snapon is 700cp and that is a larger one. These are designed to remove the clips that you have
You should put white behind the stars and black behind we the people!
I was going to suggest the same thing for the stars, but use white for both to make the words stand out more.
Yes there's a special tool flat nose pliers end sides are flat with a groove cut in the sides.
Recommend emery cloth and WD 40 and knock off the rust before using the press
Afterwards I put the axles in the metal lathe and ran emery cloth over the rusty areas they were catching on.
There is a special tile of pliers that is made to open them old stile snap rings there on Amazon but I can’t think of the name right this moment
Yes the tips are turned and flat and when squeezed thet spred apart. Compression or lock ring pliers
That was interesting ,
My opinion is that take some RR ties or 4x4 s and place under your press for added height, and a rubber mat at bottom to help eliminate a bearing race dent. Great job and video. Enjoying them all !🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍
Ahhh memories. My dad was a mechanic and he had oily old railroad ties under his press! Thanks for the memories. It has been 50 years at least!
I love that and I want one
after my comment I saw you put glassed cool beans, your sign use white paper and put it behind the stars too
They make a special plier with a flat tip that is slightly offset, I think I got mine from Snap on or Marco.
That press works great!
Yes, I am very happy with the press.
having the right tools sure helps make the job go easier. mavbe you can drill holes in the rings so you can use snap ring pliers.
Working on a d14 !! Something's are similar so im learning !!!!!! Thanks my friends !!!!! I will keep watching the videos and keep them coming !!!!!!

Try NAPA Parts Store or Snap-On Dealer for a Tool to remove that ring

Hello Evan and Rebecca
sockets work great to press out stuff i use then with my big vice to do U- joints one big one small, probably should have buffed the shaft with a drill and wire brush first. as jeff and mark and others said they make a ?duck bill ?set of pliers for the external but internal may have to hook under the tip and then put a pic or tiny strait screwdriver to work it out

They make pliers with flat tips on them. Different sizes

Hey Evan, I use this tool for Snap rings Knipex 45 21 200 made in Germany. It made a little easier. And are a Is pain in the butt.
