I love this resurgence in guitar centric music but most importantly, HOW its coming back. You and many other are leading the way by going against what my generation was taught not to do... It hits back on your "Boomer bends" phrase that I heard you say on an interview with Rick Beato. When I first started playing in the 90's, I would 'attempt' to play a style similar to yours...High tempo with minimal breaks/rests. I was told by many older players: "You're doing too much" or "It sounds cool, but there is no soul to it... Try this *Insert Boomer Bends / hands me an SRV CD*". Although there is a point to letting notes simmer a bit (i.e. David Gilmour), there are many reasons why you do not have to (i.e. Tim Henson). I believe this 'Boomer Principal' was justified as those who were playing fast in the 80's and 90's, were primarily playing neo-classical, murdering the harmonic minors scales, while alienating themselves from the average listener. Your playing is really translated to the average listener via the rhythms and accompaniment of the band, incorporating modern beats/rhythm with your fast style of playing. Well done!
I feel like a few decades ago "playing for the song" mainly translated to not playing many notes but in my opinion Tim is playing to for the song on an incredible level but... yeah, he's definitely not playing few notes. The idea of an instrument being used wrong in a song when it's doing "a lot" is something I don't understand. Yes, taking a break can be very effective but, to my ear, Tim's playing gives me the feeling of there being breaks without him missing to fill a beat with incredible notes. In general, saying that one specific way is "correct" in music is... weird to me... We can clearly see that countless ways of making music lead to an enjoyable result but some just won't understand that feel matters in art and not necessarily theory or facts.
