Same as i ! I suggested this movie to my cousin and her bf but they got bored, hardly watched the beginning of it. Had a similar reaction like Dafoe on purpose, add to that my beard and beanie! She was like "You've lost it completely ?" O.o

I was terrified of his anger towards Ephraim the whole time he made the speech. You feel his anger and know that he's really offended even if I partially understand what he was saying. The eyes that he was giving Ephraim is what made me feel his emotions.

He doesn’t blink once during his curse, it’s like he is compelled by a foreign force to finish the curse, and he is content and confident at the start fueled by wrath and aggravation, but is almost repentant towards the end as the gravity of his own words hits him leaving him in shocked horror of the curse he’s just given.

The way he described Triton and the Sea itself was like on the level of a Cosmic horror; something that makes you so terrified that you can’t even comprehend what’s happening. Even the look on Thomas Wake’s face near the end of his monologue looks genuinely shook by what he describes. That’s what horror does to you. Brilliant acting and should have won an Oscar for that!

I always have the theory in mind that the old light house keeper is his guilty conscience.
And after the incident with the tree cutting he fled to the lighthouse to hide from the authority's and killed the current lighthouse keeper in a paranoid dillusion of him being reported to the authority's by him.
And then dumped the body in the water supply and it sours the water but refuses to come to terms with the fact he is a mad man killer so instead sees a seagull decaying instead.
And to further add to the theory when the old lighthouse keeper says "dont leave me!" It's his guilty conscience reminding him to not abandon his self imposed punishment.
And why the tender never comes to pick them up is because it never existed in the first place he stole the small boat from the mainland and sailed there and destroyed it in act to stop from ever being rejoined with society on the mainland because he doesn't deserve it.
And you would think the old lighthouse keepers second would of maintained the lighthouse but didn't it's in a state of disrepair because he's actually the only one there besides the current keeper and no one has been there in quite sometime besides the young Tommy...hence why you never see a single boat If I remember correctly...beside the alleged boat that brought him there.
And also the old lighthouse keeper is never truly drunk it's like he's acting just to get the truth from him to admit what he's done and when he finally admits his act says "Why'd you spill the beans Tommy why" to finally conclude he is insane.
And somehow comes to the conclusion the lighthouse light has some significant meaning but it's just a normal light....and shocked by his dillusion act of murder on another person screams realising he truly is a madman and it was all for nothing.
And the act of seeing a siren or mermaid is his lust of never knowing a woman's warmth again but only his own....he carved that mermaid trinket from wood when he chopped a tree down in his wish to escape his current situation during woodcutting...and comes to the conclusion even a man would satisfy his lust and fights himself over the fact.
May just be a theory but that's how I viewed it lol.

@@westonstevens3239 not just insane, at this point they're stranded without supplies and aware that they might die out here, Wake and Winslow don't know or really trust each other and they each take separate shifts, but the only time they really interact as "equals" is at dinner time when they eat together and make a toast.
This film is all about power, and one of the few times when Winslow actually holds any emotional power over Wake is this scene, most of what Wake says throughout the entire film is lies, but his cooking isn't "deliberately" bad, Winslow is genuinely insulting something about him. The rest of the film its Wake who holds power over Winslow, he won't let him see the Light, he makes him do the menial jobs, he drops him when they're painting and doesn't help him, he writes him a poor report in his log book, he calls him a dog and orders him about.
But here Winslow has the power for the first time, and Wake responds to it by calling upon his unholy sea god patron. From this point onwards Wake isn't just Wake, but a vessel and conduit for the Sea-King. Prior to this point Wake seems to know of the Siren but doesn't interact with her, after this point during the fight Wake even momentarily becomes the Siren, which I think symbolises that he isn't just "Wake" anymore but a living vessel for the Sea-King.

I remember giving a homeless man some change in Philadelphia once. He was so grateful that he wanted to shake my hand. I didn't want to be rude, so I shook his hand. As we stood there shaking hands, a young couple passed by. Without letting go of my hand, he asked them for anything they could spare. They ignored him and he immediately started threatening to beat the shit out of them both. Then he turned back to me, remembered me, and proceeded to thank me all over again. Then someone else passed by, ignoring his pleas for spare change. He threatened to literally murder him, still not letting go of my hand. This went on for at least ten minutes. He would see someone, ask them for money, called down all manner of fire and brimstone upon them when they didn't acknowledge him, then turn back to me and start thanking me all over again. He never let go of my fucking hand and I felt like I couldn't suddenly be rude and try to pull away because I was basically tethered to him and in striking distance. It was the most uncomfortable experience of my life.

Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs till ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more. Only when he, crowned in cockle shells, with slithering tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral tined trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest, and PLUNGES right through yer gullet! Burstin’ ye! A bulging blacker no more, but a blasted bloody film now a nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the dread emperor himself. Forgotten to any man, to any time. Forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten, even, to the sea. I started watching this clip, then I watched the movie for the first time. Holy shit, what a mind fuck.
First off, Willem Dafoe is one of the greatest actors alive. His performance is, quite frankly, unbelievable. It was said by the director that during this monologue where he curses "Ephraim" he didn't blink for TWO MINUTES. Then of course later on in the movie where he's being buried alive (spoilers, sorry) he is delivering another monologue of sorts while simultaneously having real dirt shoveled onto him. Much of it gets into his mouth and some almost in his eyes, and he KEEPS GOING ANYWAY. This guy isn't afraid of doing anything to give everything to the role.
That's not to discredit Robert Pattinson either. I had kind of written him off as just a hacky actor who would peak at Twilight and then fade back into obscurity. Holy fuck was I wrong. His portrayal of a man with a dark past who gradually slips into alcoholic madness is phenomenal. It's like a great song or something that starts out slowly and concludes with a powerful chorus that brings it all together. The movie is damn near perfect in every regard.
Another interesting thing about this movie is that they really were filming on an island. Well, the exterior scenes anyway. They really were getting pummeled with rain and waves and the conditions were reportedly "miserable" and "exhausting" to the two principal actors in the film. It was also said that Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe basically didn't speak to each other at all until after they were done filming. They were just the characters to each other and it probably resulted in a better film for it.
This is the kind of movie that college courses will likely revolve around because of how deep it truly is. For people who don't know, it's basically a tragedy told in the Greek tradition and the beauty is in how many different ways you can interpret it. Neither one of the two main characters was being truthful with each other, the entire time. Some people even think the entire thing was a hallucination, with Robert Pattinson actually being both of the characters at the same time (they're both truly named Thomas for example) and he's simply torturing himself as an old man for failing as a younger man. I think I like that interpretation the best, because then you understand that it's basically a movie about a man who has deceived himself his entire life and by the time he realizes it, it's too late.

@@justinchalifoux4424 Yeah, The Northman, it’s supposed to be released on april 2022. It’s going to be an epic historical thriller, with lots of exteriors, set pieces, extras and most likely visual effects (Eggers himself said all of that). Quite a change from The Lighthouse, I must say (a risky move, but with talent, risky moves are welcomed).
And like someone above said, the cast is really good. Dafoe is coming back (👌), alongside Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Bill Skarsgård, Björk and Ethan Hawke. It’ll be set in the 10th century, Iceland (it’s a thriller with vikings, I believe it’s an original justice/vengeance story. Sounds pretty good). And the story is going to be written by Eggers again.
With all that in mind, I expect a lot from this film.
