@@crimsondynamo615 You know what? I would wait a year for that
I'm glad Robert Pattinson started getting better roles after Twilight and didn't spend the rest of his career only being known as "the sparkly vampire."
Ya he’s Batman now!
You should check him out in The Rover. It's an interesting performance but he does a fantastic job at it.
Straight up the best part in tenet
He was awesome in *"Good Time" too* (2017) 👍
He is seriously an awesome actor. I had a lot of reservations following his work for awhile, but im glad i gave in and gave him the chance he so clearly deserves.
Conclusion: It was all because Robert Pattinson didn't like Willem Dafoe's lobster
You’re fond of me Lobster, ain’t ye?
How could I like the horseshit you cook us up for supper?
Have it your way...I like yer cookin
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARK. HARK, TRITON, HARK!
I don’t have to say nothing.
Nice to see Willem Dafoe taking on his usual cheerie acting roles
If you wanna see him in something funny just watch Body of Evidence with Madonna. Supposed to be a mystery thriller but it's got Madonna so it turns into a so bad it's funny comedy.
This made me lol
*"Hark, Triton, hark!"*
_"OK have it your way. I like your cooking."_
Not only is this nightmare a slow burn, but it's well-balanced with humor. Both the horror / comedy elements compliment each other.
yeah, tht scene is just stellar, and WILLEM DAFOE just SHINES thruout the movie like the lighthouse itself! THT SCENE u refer to is worth watching the movie over and over again.....and tom or tommy just have to RESIGN there due to Ephriam turning into POSEIDON himself...its just friggin funny !
My daughter told me, to this day, every time someone inquires how she likes something, she hears "Ye LiKeD mE LoBsTeR StEw DiDnT yE?!?!"
It's a slow burn on the first watch but not so much upon rewatch. The film really has no filler. With each chore that he does, Winslow is getting closer and closer to breaking.
I got chills in the theatre when he says “why’d ya spill yer beans Tommy”
I watched it at night by myself… the volume slowly goes down and then I hear that 😭😭😭
That whole scene blew my mind.
You never really get over that scene, do you?
I was laughing my ass off. This movie is one of the funniest I've ever seen.

Yeah I agree, just a power struggle between two men going crazy
Yeah pretty much. They just got too drunk.
this is literally what I thought it was. I am almost mind blown how much this channel pulled out lol
@@iTechmen1 that’s called interpretation, art is allowed to do that. This video isn’t fact. I don’t think the film is this, just as much as you see the film in your own way. That’s what art is supposed to do.
Agreed. I love the Analyzing Evil series, but this video is a prime example of looking _way_ too deep into things. I hate when people over-analyze art -- just let it be mysterious.
I love how the title implies the lighthouse itself is a villain.
I mean, he ain’t wrong
To over simplify my own theory: I like to think this story is a lovecraftian tale about a living beacon that brings obsessed people to feed off of, much like a flame feeding off of moths. The lighthouse is alive and brings both knowledge and suffering to those who care for it.
where you get the living light interperation from? I like it but where did you get this idea from?
@@Gadget-Walkmen idk I just like the concept of the foreboding eldritch terror that drives men to insanity just by gazing upon it's true form/it's forbidden knowledge
I feel like old Tom ruined his marriage due to his obsession as the light fed off of his obsession. Old Tom was careful not to be fully taken by the light but very much was infatuated with it, something Young Tommy couldn't control. Young Tommy found forbidden knowledge once the light took him (he is shown to both find pleasure but unfathomable pain just from seeing the light's true form) and was disregarded to the birds and other dead sailors/wickies after it was done with him.
I mean why not, the movie itself doesn't give us any meaning whatsoever. So every fan theory is as valid as any other.
I want a Lighthouse-esque Silent Hill game now haha.
@@alt0799 that already exists lol

I read all your research on how to care for a light house
Combo comment.
Massively under-rated. Both of you.
"You can't do this to me. I built this lighthouse. YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I SACRIFICED."
Meta meme
I've seen a few videos dissecting this film, and I love how each one has a different takeaway. That's the mark of a true masterpiece in my opinion. Everyone interprets it differently.
For real though. Everybody I’ve ever talked to about this film has a different reading of it. It’s amazing.
My favorite line from Tom near the end was bone chilling "How long have we been on this rock?....four weeks?....two days?....help me recollect" was beautiful showing how long of isolation and dread during the burning winds of the storm where man looses time in this need of meaning.
I thought the movie was about the struggle between the older generation's authority and desperation to hold onto their station against the younger generation that tries their best but becomes frustrated under the cruel dictatorship of the old guard who seems more interested in basking in their own glory at the top of the lighthouse than ensuring the well-being and capability of the next generation. Dafoe covets the light and Pattinson slowly realizes that he will never be allowed to stand at the top so he gives up and devolves into madness. When I watched the movie I thought he gouged out his eye after realizing the reality of his situation and his actions and how futile everything was. The game was always rigged and he is punished like Prometheus for touching the fire he was forbidden from.
This is a great take!
I don't think there is any right or wrong interpretation of the movie. It's meant to be whatever you the viewer project onto it.
The original script didn’t name rhe characters- just called them “old and young “
Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York or Daniel Plainview from There will be Blood. Those two are as psychologically complex as evil fictional characters can get. Doesn’t hurt that they were both played by Daniel Day Lewis either.
Yes, There will be blood would be great for this guy
Yeah
There Will Be Blood is my favorite film of all time. I don't necessarily think it's the best film ever made, but it's powerfully impactful. I think it would be interesting to compare Eli Sunday and Daniel Plainview, as they each suffer mightily for their greed and lust for power.
@@misacruzader ...bastard from a basket..... BASTARD FROM A BASKET!
Great choice!
A really funny yet believable theory I've heard is that at the top of the lighthouse is nothing, and that Tom just wanted some privacy. Thats why Tommy screams at the end cause he realises that he killed a man for nothing.
Can you do Louis Bloom from Nightcrawler? He's honestly one of the best psychopaths I've seen in a film and Jake Gyllenhaal's performance is incredible.
Great suggestion.
Sociopath
I left the theater PISSED OFF after watching Nightcrawler, that’s when I came to the conclusion Jake Gyllenhaal was an AMAZING actor because I can’t remember a time I felt anything after watching a movie‼️
Haha look what The Vile Eye just did :)
That's one of my all-time favorites.
The grandmother from Hereditary would be an interesting study. Coupled with the fact that she's never even featured in the film other than as a dead body.
I honestly cannot think of any film that has a villain more evil than her due to the nature of her transgression.
There are Polaroid pictures of her showering herself with gold coins and conducting rituals with her coven, if my memory serves me right.

That parallel you drew between Tom's behavior and the sea, both being able to become aggressive and unhinged unexpectedly, was really cool.
I haden't picked up on that.
To be honest I don't think the evidence for the repressed homosexuality subtext is very strong in this film, but I can still see how you could arrive at that interpretation regardless. The parallels to Greek mythology are definitely there though, and are in fact one of the aspects of the film's symbolism that are actually explicit. This film is so genius in its ambiguity, you could probably watch it 100 times and come away with 200 different interpretation of events. It was easily the best film of 2019 and an instant modern masterpiece of film.
I wish he had of explained repressed homosexuality more too. I actually came to the comments to see if anyone piggy backed on his statements. I will say that I can see the lighthouse being a phallic symbol and when Tom and Tommy got into spats it seemed like they were husband and wife but I’ve never heard a theory that the man he killed was his lover… but it really interests me and I’m wondering how I missed that!
@@chelseybrown2334 I can see a possibility that he was maybe infatuated with Winslow and killed him out of some misplaced feeling of self loathing, but I don't see how you could jump to the conclusion of them being lovers or romantically involved with each other. There's not enough information given in the movie to come to that sort of conclusion about their relationship.
@@chelseybrown2334 I’m thinking he’s gay so he sees robs pattison character repressing the gay stuff because I didn’t see anything showing he’s gay

The dark beauty of this film, aside from how it was shot, is that it has so many layers, so many things to uncover.
This is the best analysis I’ve seen so far. The idea that Thomas and tommy are the same person is mind blowing. The log book at the end makes so much sense, the genius of this film is that it can be interpreted both ways. That they are separate or the same and the overall message would be about the same. Atonement of the soul and realizing the self. Simply amazing, thank you for this.
Good video, I always assumed that Dafoe's character hurt his leg from previously falling down the lighthouse trap door, like Pattinson does at the end, hence him changing his story, to hide the "power" of the light.

Truly detailed analysis. I enjoyed the movie but never looked this deep into it. Listening to this makes me think of how an "Analyzing Evil" audiobook with a villain each chapter would be a great listen.

you should do frank ( Dennis hopper ) from blue velvet
Hear hear! _Blue Velvet_ isn't discussed enough.
Here's an unconventional suggestion as he isn't exactly evil in a traditional way. But Richard Hammond from Jurassic Park. Could be interesting
You mean John Hammond? If we're talking the film version, he's not evil in the slightest. Novel version? You would have a case.
@@Skrenja
Novel version of Lewis Dodgson would make a good video too
John Hammond in the film is a textbook narcissist. Arguably evil considering his greed and lack of empathy for the deaths of multiple people caused by him.
I've honestly never seen a film with such a wide range of perfectly acceptable interpretations. To me, it's the hell of being trapped with co-workers you hate and that nothing ever hits the reset button; the pot can only boil further. I spent several deployments in Iraq and my god if this doesn't truly remind me of being stuck on the far side of the planet with some of those assholes.

A deeply insightful analysis. I don't however think that it will actually be an eternal staycation cycle, I think it's more likely that he will eventually understand, albeit he may have to repeat the cycle hundreds of quintillion septillion lighthousillions of times. Great job shedding some 'light' on a deeply mental film. Thank you, thank you, I'm here until Tommy throws me off a cliff suddenly about 1/4th of the way into the movie.

Very insightful interpretation and explanation of this movie. I feel like I understand the film a little better now. Thanks for a great analysis.
When Patterson's character was bitching about his cooking, that earful speech Thomas Wake gave him was a foreshadowed damnation on how he said he would end up exactly. It was a great movie with its humorous and sometimes insane moments, but they made it work. Thumbs up!

This has to be one of the better essays on The Lighthouse that I've watched thus far, Bravo.
it's bullshyte, through and through,
Damn, that was a really good analysis of the movie. I like your idea of this being purgatory and everything else about it being about this guy’s consciousnesses.
According to Jung Tommy needs the anima to communicate with his unconscious mind; the anima is represented by the mermaid. Since he keeps refusing her he can't redeem himself by integrating his shadow or aligning with his unconscious.
When I first saw this film I understood there was a lot of greek mythos and symbolism laid in throughout the story, but I generally understood it as a tale of two liars, that somewhat find out that they are highly similar and through the monotony of their lives they slowly go insane. It was just that they are two conflicting faces of the same coin. However, after your explanation I see that I've missed quite a few things. And now I want to see this film multiple times to check if there is anything else I've missed.
Great take on a strange film. Eveyone seems to like chipping in with their recommendations, so heres mine 'Tony Soprano'. One of the greatest TV villains of all time.
Fascinating analysis! I have not watched this film but will definately be doing so after this!
im not so sure about him being gay, theres only really one tiny hint in the movie that he is that i can find and even then you can boil that down to him being pissed as a bat and lonely. i never made the connection that ephriam was his man crush
Right? I don't get the homoerotic theme I've seen many bring up. Maybe I'm missing something?
Like I know the Winslow and Thomas dance, hug or have passionate fights during the movie, but I'm not sure that demonstrates attraction.
@@plumpowder4793 Well, they _did_ almost kiss at one point. But they were blackout drunk, and that stuff happens. Especially, like Adam Liddle said, when two people are desperately lonely. It's possible that Young killed Ephraim because he felt some sort of attraction, but it's also just as possible that he killed him out of sheer resentment. Or it could be a combination.
