Thanks for all the love, everyone 😁 Just wanted to clear up one thing that’s come up in a few comments - Many of you mentioned the scene where Beau reads smut in the tunnel to pass the time. I checked while making the compilation and discovered that it’s actually a different book, not Tusk Love. I think it’s about a sailor? idk. But I do appreciate how many times smut books have been brought up in canon 😂

I just started watching campaign 2 (no spoilers pls), and Jester's outburst in E11 3:08:09 is about tusk love
I hope matt understands that he could write tusk love and it could be the worst book ever but it would sell like hot cakes
He probably does, and has likely decide that it should NEVER HAPPEN for that very reason. Because it would become part if his legacy (and likely an oversized part).
If Matt writes it, it WON'T be bad. He may need an editor but he's a Master Storyteller.
Tusk Love would be better than 50 shades of grey and you can't change my mind on that.

@@AlmostOtaku7 Yes for Jester. Caleb is a little more complicated. Bren isn't a dead name for him. He picked Caleb because he needed a different name that wasn't the one he was wanted by. And the friends he made know him as Caleb, not Bren. He doesn't ask the people who knew him as Bren to call him Caleb. I'm not saying to call him Bren, since Caleb is definitely the name he goes by now after his reinvention. But he responds to Bren without animosity or pain or discomfort.
@@saetharion I mean, he does respond with clear trauma, as someone with a dead name, but sure, you can argue the opposite, too. I don't mean to be mean, just saying, from what I've seen and experienced, both are dead names.

@@AlmostOtaku7 There is a heavy difference between "deadnaming" in the sense of "changing your name to hide who you are" and deadnaming in the sense of a name that does not describe you any more. Bren is not a true deadname for Caleb. Him going by Caleb is along the lines of Caleb Dume in Star Wars: Rebels going by the name Kanaan Jarrus to hide his true identity. Don't trivialize it by pretending it's anywhere close to the same level of deadnaming a trans person.
The fact that Matt had actual notes on the book is great

Heh. After the second time it came up, I'd just pull out a "copy" of the book that I'd whipped up. Because I'm that kind of GM. Although, I haven't had an opportunity to do this with smut yet. That'd be fun. Maybe one day.

@@corvid4933 Honestly, the sheer number of people writing their own versions of Tusk Love may be my absolute favorite thing to come of this campaign xD I've dabbled a bit with it even in my spare time when I want to keep my writing sharp.
At first I thought I wanted to read it, but now what I want is the audiobook with Laura reading it as Jester!
Cut like 15 years later, Ronin is watching Critical Role and has to sit through all of this.

The DMs curse: your player has now taken a keen and specific interest in something you just made up on the spot for flavor and now need to put way more thought into than it warrants.
When he says "Er, let me check," I guarantee he's looking at a list of orc names for these exact off-the-cuff responses. Smart.
@@benjaminoechsli1941He is, there's a video about how to be a DM with Matt and one of the things he shows is his notebook. He has pages with about 10-20 male and female names for different races just in case something like this happens.
@@mildlyangryguy6292 That is DM-ing 101. Have a list of names, since a pre-named NPC in a sea of un-named NPCs is a dead giveaway that the NPC is important. It's like breaking out a paper map when a player asks how the warehouse is laid out - if you do, it tells the players that this is an encounter location. Keep it descriptive, but in the theatre of the mind until people need to roll for initiative. If you want to be very tricksy, draw the map "on the fly" even though you know just how the encounter map is laid out. That way, the players don't necessarily know that you plotted out the encounter.
Almost any "dirty trick" is fair for a DM. Your players will try to kill your spirit, so turn-about is fair play. You craft an interesting encounter that will really drive the plot, but just give hints about it - so as not to railroad the game - and the players will just skate over that 90% of the time. Your players will split the party "supposedly" for good RP reasons, but really you know it is because they hate you and want to make your life harder.
But always remember: the best revenge is living well. When one of those players finally accepts DM duty for a one-off, give it back to them in spades.
Eh, I kid. But the DM for most of my first few years of AD&D was fantastic. I aspire to be like him more than to be like MM or BLM. The guy could run a story so well that it was always compelling. And we could not tell when his responses to our nonsense was planned or ad libbed. Except for the one NPC called Duodenum (pronounced differently than an anatomist/biologist would pronounce it - but a great NPC nonetheless).
I did not realize the book was mentioned this often. At this point Tusk Love is the backbone of campaign two, the glue that keeps the Mighty Nein together 👌🏻

So this turned up in our D&D campaign, where I have a history of accidentally looting porn when enemies don't have actual loot.
So our party of level 2's comes across a Dragon Reborn necromancer and they roll a nat 1 on their perception to spot us. GM says they're reading a book. We take them down fairly swiftly and my (old dwarf grandmother) goes "I take the book they were reading."
"It is called 'Tusk love' and has a human and an orc on the cover."
"...It's porn, isn't it?"
"Yup."
"I pocket it without showing the rest of the party."
A few sessions later we're Legitimately Attending a Noble's fancy party as a celebration for the successful return of another adventuring party. To liven up the party they've been lent a magical mirror that transforms people into monstrous forms. The old lady dwarf takes one look at the stuck up nobles, the grumpy ranger and the dragonborn cleric and *grins*.
I hand a note to the DM saying "I want to turn into the Orc from the porn novel, but with more clothes."
And so the GM begins to describe the Orc in *glorious* detail, complete with shiny tusks, glistening 8 pack, the works, including tight leather trousers that leave little to the imagination. The rest of the players are facepalming, I'm cackling, and the GM finishes with "...And you hear a gasp and an 'Oh my!' behind you."
The party happens, I lose the illusion and get one of a siren next time. I end up chatting to the other party's (noble) Bard about it and admit I got it from a book. He immediately responds with
Bard: "Ah! I knew it looked familiar! Tusk Love?"
Me: "Yup."
Bard: "With that woodcut on the mountain...?"
Me: "Yuuuuup."
Cleric: "Oh gods there's *two* of them now.
... and today I found out where it came from and I am NOT SURPRISED.

I once got permission to play a succubus. She was pretending to be a human while working in a tavern, the job came with a room, and she had shelves full of books. I compiled a list of all the books' titles, "Tusk Love" was among them, though my personal favorite was "Flames of Ecstasy". I only got to use one title though, before the DM asked to have the character removed without valid reason, he claimed balancing issues, and I agreed to switch characters. I soon left that group because his version of balance was giving the assassin anything he wanted and more when I wasn't allowed a plus one sword, not even exaggerating.
Tusk Love is too overpowered. I would've done the same. /s

She’s such a good actress I can’t tell if she made Genevieve up on the spot and retconned it in as her own name later or if she just pretended it was something random and off the cuff here.
And here I thought this was something my DM came up with. My gnome ranger Mewtholobar was pretending to read this when he and his party were trying very hard to act like they didn't just teleport into the commander's office.

Although Jester reading "Tusk Love" to the ghosts was not a clutch moment in game play, it shows how she is the living embodiment of a Trickster God. The impulse was impish and had no ill intent. It was even pretty sweet. Again, I like to think that Jester eventually becomes the Trickster God.
