You don't know how much I love you for saying let's go over bass boost don't use it. Truer words were never spoken!
Great video. As soon as you said “bass boost: don’t use it” I knew you were legit.
Depending on the Filter characteristics and subwoofer it can be useful to flatten the response. For example you make a compromise in enclosure building that it maybe is strong below 30hz and works okay up to 100hz but there is a dip in between yet the enclosure might be a lot smaller made like this depending on many factors and if that filter boosts this area and the sub can handle the power it is very very useful to make the Response flat. Same goes for any other filter. If the speaker can handle a boost there is no problem using it.
You seriously just helped me understand crossovers for the first time after 3 years of messing with my equalizer in my kenwood. I can not believe I just now understood the fact that the drop off being a sudden drop off for me is better than a slow drop off. Thank you so much seriously.
Thank you for explaining the x’over…. It literally saved my tweeters in my pillars. I could barely turn up the radio without them cracking, but once you explained the x’over it changed everything!!! So much better
You guys have the Best in depth videos on youtube, A+
I have a single din Excelon without this display. This helped me understand what is actually going on much clearer. Thanks
Thank you very much for all of the different videos highlighting all the different features
Thank you.
Just what I needed with my brand new DMX8019DABS installed in a 31 year old Land Rover One Ten which has the acoustic properties of a sewer combined with an international airport on a windy day with someone using a hair dryer, someone else banging a drum and several others making random noises.
Everyone here is asking how to tune their graphic EQ's. Good question! Since I have many years experience tuning medium and larger scale PA systems professionally, I thought I'd offer some friendly help:
You can do this! It's all about using your ears. A very simple way to start is to set your graphic flat and put on your favorite music, semi-loud. Turn up each freq, one by one, and listen to the difference it makes. If that freq hurts your ears or distorts the speakers, turn it down until it doesn't. If you like a freq and want to hear it more, turn it up a bit. Repeat across the band. It should sort of look like waves, but probably nothing too extreme plus or minus. And despite what you've seen others do, a smiley face is probably NOT going to sound best. Basically, you should be able to get it very loud, without distortion, AND without hurting your ears. It should also sound balanced across the freq spectrum (low to high). Make sure you can hear the bass, vocals (mids), and highs.... and all of the instruments in the song. Only after all of that is done, if you really want more bass.... turn up the bass.
There are more professional tools and methods out there for sure, but this is the basic method every pro audio engineer refers to in a pinch. You might find you enjoy it, and you will be training your ears at the same time. Happy tuning!
In a few words: you are such a good and cool person, Sr.
@@marcob.9969 Hey, Thanks Marco!!
Also, if you still want more bass after all of that, use subtractive eq. Subtractive eq can come in handy if for all frequencies but in our case, it usually means “adding” even more bass. We do this by leaving the bass levels the same (after eq’ing everything) and turn down all of the other frequencies in unison. This creates more perceptive bass in relation to the other frequencies. It should add some volume headroom as well.
Thanks for the great tip. I am struggling with the Sound Effect part 1:05. I have played with it so much I can't figure out the best setting anymore. Should I turn them all off and just try your equalizer adjustment method?
@@snowwalker9999 I tried all of the 'sound effect' settings offered on the unit for kicks. In the end, I left them all off and just set the graphic EQ. They were fun to play with, but were more ear candy than useful. Although it is impressive technology, they tend to create an unnatural sound using complex algorithms and digital filters. Note that no professional recording studio is going to use these types of artificial processing, so why should we? I say stick with the graphic, you'll have more fun tuning, and get better results across all recordings. Cheers
Exactly the info I was looking for to help me tune my deck and set it up better, appreciate the video guys!
I'm seriously so impressed with this channel. Thanks for helping me understand my stereo. Subscribed!
This is old and I’m bringing it back up. AWESOME JOB ON THIS VIDEO
I learned so much watching this!!!!
I just bought the dmx1037s and this tutorial is perfect !
Just installed the kenwood ddx99704s into my Honda element. This has helped me greatly!
I have this unit in my car and the hd tuner isnt picking up stations well. How has yours been
The HD RADIO HAS BEEN ok in my area
Just installed the kenwood dmx809s. This is perfect. Thank you
Guys great video just purchased this unit and finally was able to property set all sounds.
Fantastic explanation of the features, helps me understand what I can change to get just that "perfect" sound... and way to go Kenwood... 10000% better stereo head unit than the Sony I bought first and returned... audio settings on the Sony were about 2.5% of the options on the Kenwood. My unit is the Kenwood DMX7706S. The Sony was the XAV-AX210SXM. Love the Kenwood - the Sony made me feel unsafe to drive, the interface was so bad with Android Auto.
Thank you for the video. My favorite part: “of course we have 15s” lol
Great video. I have this in a slingshot so this is very helpful.
Big help. Thanks very much I learned a lot
Nice walk through. Thanks!!
Thank you for the useful info my friends.
Omg!!!!!!!thanks sooooo much...very helpful...I now understand the Xover settings...
I needed this. Thank you
I’ve had my kenwood installed for about 3 weeks but the sound just wasn’t right. After watching this I got it PERFECT. THANKS SOOO MUCH
Very informative! Please do more videos like this.
Greetings from Malaysia!
maman89 hey there, thank you very much and thank you for letting us know where you are from, super cool.
Another great and helpful video. In my 2011 GC I just set
the dnx893 to no bass boost, loudness low, no drive eq yet, no space enhancer,
realizer off and sound stage to middle. I did have bass boost at 1 and loudness
off but at low volumes it was thin. EQ is Rock
Rob Figenbaum yeah not a fan of bass boost, I have the 9903 settings on the shelf waiting to go in. It is driving me crazy I can't wait to play with it.
Surprisingly still relevant
Great vid. Learned a lot
Great Video, now i know what is the Slope function at Xover.
You guys are great😊
great video
Great vid! Thxxx
Vote for Pedro hahaha! Way to go again guys! Rock on 😎
@2:06 "Drive Equalizer" DOES NOT eliminate road noise, that's impossible from a head units position.
However, like the name a
implies, it will "Compensate" by adjusting it sound for the effects of road noise, determined by your volume level. The next generation version (Drive Equalizer+) does this by determining the actual car speed, by using GPS.
Thank you
Ive learned so much from this video. I just got the Dmx709s. Only thing im still having trouble with is getting the vocals to come as clear as the rest. I listen to hard rock/metal and the music always trumps the vocals. I can't get them equal. Any advice?
nice got the older dnx 5150
Awesome thanks.
Will the new Excelon Reference series memorize the settings so in case of power failure.... you don't have to go through all of this over again? I am specifically looking at the DNX995S.
This is so helpful thank you. I do wish the audio installer had fix all these settings for me.
You can. Go to a top rated shop and they'll charge you but it's worth it.
Search my name in the comments for a guide to setup the graphic EQ.
Great video! If you are trying to grow your channel though I would recommend writing a script, it may seem silly but it will greatly enhance your production quality
I would love to get a sound system installed with you guys.
Thanks man
sweet now if I can figure how to set the radio stations .
This was helpful in explaining the features of the radio. I have a question though. Can you help me understand how bass and treble relate to the EQ at the different frequencies? Generally, on a stock radio I do 10/10 bass and 8/10 on treble. I'm trying to figure out how to set the EQ to where I can achieve more boom bass from the speakers AND a clear volume for vocals. Any help would be appreciated.
Jonathan Gamber get better speakers. Cranking up the EQ is just going to cause distortion at high volume levels. But to answer your question, bass and treble settings are exactly the same as the EQ in this video, except you can only adjust 2 frequencies instead of 13. Typically bass is centred at 100Hz and treble is 1000Hz.
This answered a bunch of questions, as I have this unit and am just familiarizing myself with it. Can you tell me what to look for if, when hooked to Apple carplay, I can barely hear people who call me even when phone volume is all the way up? Thanks in advance.
When setting the crossover for each set of speakers do i put in the setting from the specs the speaker manufacturer gives for that speaker?
Thanks for the video. I have the DMX907S. I'm wondering if this HU uses crossovers by default? I thought I was utilizing only my amp settings, but watching this video made me wonder if I might not be getting what I think; especially if I select the car type, speaker position and size, etc. I assume from that information, Kenwood is choosing crossover parameters, gain, etc vs me explicitly setting the crossover values using the X'OVER button? If by default the Excelon is applying crossover values, how do I turn it off? By setting car type to none? Or am I misunderstanding?
Any way you can go more into detail on how and when to use the 2 way vs 3 way option for the X over on the excelon DMX706S
Thank you for this video. I have a Kenwood and the manual stinks. I was able to adjust my head unit with a much better understanding after this video. Thanks
Million thanks 🙏... I did not know Ken wood has such a lot of features... I thought pioneer was the lion king 😁
Kindly advise which specific after-market radio will give me very low sub frequencies of 25Hz (air bass) without distortion. Am not into apple/ android auto connect features or cameras... am more interested in sound quality .
Thanks again Sir.
Thank you for the great video!! EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!! Just so I Understand, I've installed a pair of Polk Audio DB6501 speakers with their own crossover. Based on your video should I remove the crossover cutoffs and allow the Polk crossovers to do all the work?
Hi... You don't have to remove your crossovers. You can leave them, as you would just be adding extra protection. Kinda like a failsafe. If you mess up on Ur unit the crossover you have already will save you from ruining your speakers by accident
I need one of those
i have the dmx905s and a rockford p1000x5 im getting way to much bass and it spikes on the higher bass freqs like its way louder than other sounds. the only thing i have found to help is to turn the gain down on the head unit in the xover settings but everyone says pick one the amp or the unit for hpf and lpf but my sub i can only do on the amp because i cant turn the lpf off??
ok so I bought the DNX 7705S and neither the front two tweets nor the subwoofer work! I drive an 07' Element that came with factory tweets, sub, and 4 door speakers (two in the front door and the other 2 in the back two doors). I replace the 4 door speakers with kicker red speakers (and they sound AMAZING) however, no sound at all comes from my tweeters nor the sub (all 3 of which are still the factory speakers). Help!!
Question is the crossover setting necessary if I am running 2 amps (one sub and one to 6x9s) and the amp filters are set to how I want it?
that voice crack at 9:24 hahaha. great video nonetheless
Do these settings all function as intended if I'm using the factory amp/processor with a Maestro RR? Vehicle is a 2021 Grand Cherokee with the 10 speaker Alpine system.
I had a ddx9907xr kenwood installed in my c6 corvette which had bose premium navigation system. When I had the factory radio installed i had my treb at 5 mid a 3 and bass at 3 from a 0-5 setting on each. I don't know what to set this radio at to have it sound good? Still has factory bose speakers and tweets in it. I don't know the frequency they are to set a cross over or even where I should put the equ to sound as I had it to the factory radio. Get really distorted above volume 28. Could you help me where to set the eq?
How can you tune the c6 Corvette when It has 10in speakers in the lower front, tweeters in the upper front door and the rears have 5.25 in the ?
I have this install in my car it’s worth it
Under OEM setup there is options for amp gain and speed control. What do these do?
I have been searching high and low trying to find a straight answer about the Sub Level mentioned @13:30. How does this effect RCA voltage? If the RCAs are clean all the way up, Do you get your full 4v with sub level at 0, or all the way up? the exact radio i have is a DDX375bt and I watched you guys specific video about and didn't see anything there either. Kenwood is shooting themselves in the foot giving these radios this level of function and not clearly mapping exactly how it works.
Im being offered this 9904s unit for a decent price and thinking of swapping it out for my pioneer avh x4800bs. Is it worth it or is the pioneer better? Im attracted to the kenwood for the better screen, higher 5v preout, and more sound setting options
Hi Guys, thanks for your very instructive videos about Audio, (the little I know about Head units I learned from you) I hope you can help me: Best Buy isntalled a Kenwwood DMX7706S for me, i connected my Iphone X with Apple Play and when I'm on the phone the sound only comes through the subwoofer which means I have to disconnect my Phone from the unit and use Speaker phone. I already selected Front speakers in Phone settings but did not help at all, Do you have any suggestions that my help me with this problem? Freddy Thanks you from the Bronx, NY.
wow, mind blown
cool video
just bought the same unit , need to go to college , ill figure it out in 4 years LMMFAO WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Idk if you still answer questions here but I have one. I have an 06 pathfinder with the Bose system. Kenwood ddx9703s.
Since it used factory amplifier and speakers I have it hooked up via RCAs.
The harness only provided me 4 RCAs which I hooked up to front and rear.
Included in the rear channels is the rear speakers and the factory subwoofer
It's a long shot but is there anyway to adjust the sub settings?
Also a 2nd question. I have a problem with blueooth calling/microphone.
People I talk to complain they cant hear me or can barely understand me because the sound quality is so poor.
I tried adjusting noise cancellation and those microphone settings with no help
Is it a bad mic? Or Is there anything else I can adjust on the unit?
I hate to have to take it all apart to replace a faulty mic if it turns out to be simple setting fix.
Hope u get this. Thanks so much in advance
Can I use the X-over if my car unit doesn't have external amplifiers and subwoofer connected, and it's driving the factory speakers?
Appreciate the vid. Just be careful using some of those other dsp settings and the eq. Those often introduce clipping/distortion.
thornygravy thank you and yes everything in moderation:)
So the speaker level adjustment has no positive db adjustment. Just lowering it?
What would we select for a single cab truck? SUV or Wagon? I have two front speakers and two year speakers only. No subs
I've got a dmx4707s can't seem to get sound from rear speakers on Bluetooth. How do you change that setting?
Hi great video. Need help wiring. Have kenwood dnx 995s and alpine type r with Polk audio pa d1000.1. Have power but no sound. Thanks
hey guys. i was wondering if i can take signal from my radio send it to a crossover then from the crossover to a eq then to an amp
I have a dnx573s, alpine speakers rs63 in front and rs60 in the back plus alpine amp ktp 445u which is also alpine , can you please help me to put best futures and nice eq setting , sound effect settings, the crossover and speakers my car is compact Nissan cube lower door , tweeter small in front thanks
This is a great Radio I love it but I can't get the phone calls to come through loud enough to hear I've tried everything I just can't get my call volume to be loud and the volume is up as high as it can go. Any suggestions
Great videos thanks. I have the same ddx 9903s and after watching I went to change a few setting but cross over is greyed out. Anyway to open it up?
I have a Kenwood DDX396. I wired my after market speakers to my after market amp. I have the wiring harness from my Kenwood wired to the factory harness. I have a 12" sub wired to an amp. When i turned it on i get a Miswiring DC Offset Error/Warning Offset Error. I checked the wires they look ok. Any tips that can help? Also Congratulations on installer of the year. FISH
Can you guys make a video on the best types of cables to use for audio. Like what us the best guage for mid bass speakers, subwoofers and stufd like that.
depends on the application. there is no go to as far as power wire goes it depends on amp draw.
speaker wire is pretty universal though
Thanks for the great vids. On my DDX9903s, four of the options are not lit for me to select; speaker/x'over, equalizer, position/dta and sound effect. Things I've tried; putting it in park, turning iPhone bluetooth off, and tried playing a CD just to make sure it's not on standby.
seanautube try resetting the radio just in case something was turned off
ua-cam.com/video/_Cr622kzvmg/v-deo.html
I just tried that and now the only lit option under audio is zone control? I bought it from Ebay as refurbished, but guaranteed to work.
You are the maaaaaaaaan!!!!!!! Like I said, the problem seemed worse right after initializing, but I opened up Audio settings today and it's all there! I guess it just needed a full reboot by turning the vehicle off and then on. Not only that, but I didn't have to do the update over again, it kept all the update fixes / perks.
seanautube sweet, glad you got it working. Enjoy
I am, thanks again. Quick question; I have an older v-power alpine amp (MRP-F250) with 40w x4. Will it sound better than an Alpine KTP-445U Universal Power Pack claiming 45w x4?
You guys are awsome! Please show me how to do a first time Garmin maps update on the Kenwood DNR1007XR. I can't get the ID code transferred to my SD card. Garmin NAV instructions don't work.
Is there a Gapless Playback option for FLAC and MP3 Files? I just want to hear Dark Side of the Moon without silences between the songs. I have the DNX695S, BTW.
does the Kenwood DPX304MBT have these sound features?
I was thinking of purchasing an separate DSP to go with the kenwood 893s. To achieve a good or awesome sound in my car will the DSP built in the 893 be enough or can I still ad a DSP?
+Marshall Timmons the Kenwood is a pretty amazing DSP. If you want more you can definitely add something else
What headunit model did u use in this video please I'm interested in getting 1
Hi, I have DDX9904S and can't access the XOVER, it's greyed out, why is that
I have a kenwood DDX23BT end a iPhone when I play the Bluetooth end I increase the volume at 28 gos back to 15 doesn’t let me go over do you know how to fix it Gracias
Are these the same basic functions of a DSP? What is is lacking that the DSP has? One thing which be cool is EQ per speaker rather than per input which is maybe where the DSP shines?
Thanks for the great video. I have a question I have the DNX693s installed in my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and left the factory amp in. The problem is I hear white noise or hiss on all my speakers more so in the rear how can I eliminate it? Thanks Steven
Steven Ross what interface did you use?
Five Star Car Stereo I use the Meastro RR
Steven Ross well that is a great interface. At this point you have 2 choices. 1 live with it or 2 replace the factory amp with something better. Unfortunately interfacing with factory is not always perfect.
Five Star Car Stereo I agree with you I think I will replace it with the Kenwood eXcelon XR600-6DSP when it comes out in a couple of weeks that's the was to go it think unless you have a better idea.
Steven Ross that amp would be over kill if you are running a 693. The radio already has all DSP features built in. I would just get the XR900-5 and be done.
Damn, feels like this has more things to play with. I also have the Pioneer, though it is similar, it doesn't have or do some of things this thing offers. You can fine tune more, more custom user settings, select speaker sizes?
Ya I had a pretty old but high-end Pioneer and recently switched to the best "small size Kenwood Excelon" unit and honestly it is clearly better, much more customization and overall better DSP. Paid like 170$CAD so not expensive.
I don't have zone control on mine, how do I then turn on the rear pre out?
are all the settings lost if the battery is disconnected or can it somehow save all the crossover points and etc.
Depends on model
Mine reset itself after the car audio place set the system perfectly. Now im sitting here watching tube videos trying to fix it back lol
What can I do to make my volume better cause when I plug my phone in for Apple car play it gets loud and as soon as bass hits it gets quiet and it bothers me
How do I get my KENWOOD to hook up to my car gauges so I can see them through my stereo
Can you tell me which stereo will gives you best musical experience Alpine or Kenwood. Since the tuning level of kenwood matches the alpine. Please suggest me a best stereo which give us more audio clarity and good experience.
Check out the Ddx9903s
this menu is much more intuitive than their newer models like the ddx396
