I haven't been watching trains in Jonesboro lately which is almost at the other end of this run, but gee. Makes me want to eat at that resturant again and see what goes through on the old run from New Orleans to KC. Jonesboro is about half way. Maybe I should film one over there again.

The first one was Georgia Power Plant Scherer (mainly RWSX) empties likely headed to south GA for the usual winter storage. When people here turn off the A/C, there's less power consumption, and thereby less coal burned. They usually store at least three trainsets on the abandoned south GA mainlines every winter, and the shortlines charge them storage fees.

I love getting to see the extra long coal trains when they come through Colorado along BNSF and UP's Joint Line. It is usually BNSF that is running them heading north through Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Denver. Luckily those trains can usually move at track speed so they come through at 40 t0 45MPH.

    • @KCTopDawg

@KCTopDawg not always. Here on the Thayer Subdivision, they'll run as two separate trains from Memphis, Tennessee all the way to Thayer, MO. Once at Thayer, they'll generally have the first train go to MP 335.1 and tie it down until the outbound crew is ready and the second train arrives. Once the outbound crew is on the head end of the first train, the second train is brought in behind the first and coupled up. Its at which point they'll have a responder aid in setting up the train along with the crew on the second train where the lead motors on that train becomes part of the mid train DPU consist (BNSF will typically operate these trains in a 1×2×1 configuration while the remaining units are offline). Once the outbound crew has the new consist setup and everything is tested, the train is ready to depart for Springfield! Because of the excessive lengths of these double empty coal trains, they effectively become a Z train and have top priority as they are nearly double the length of most sidings on the Thayer North Sub.
