This show is a great example of how a dark/gritty tone can really elevate the material over the tone that marvel brings. Everyone talks shit on zack snyders dc films because of their tone, but this show and its ideas and its dark tone is LITERALLY 100% in service of actually moving the story forward. Patrick willems, lessons from the screenplay, and possibly the dude from just write all say how action scenes shouldn't take you out of the story for the sake of pacing.No matter how mundane or simple an action scene is, should always be in the service of moving the story forward towards a conclusion Even though I love zack snyder's various DC films, if I look at his themes and the overall dark and gritty feel, it doesn't always work, but as long as he's left alone by the studio, the justice league wouldn't have been tonally challenged.
I believe Snyder's son had died while he was working on JL and he had to leave before finishing the film. Thats why Joss Whedon stepped in and tried to work with whatever he can to keep in line with the release date.
The difference is that this show knows how to pace and build a narrative whilst building interesting characters through natural dialogue and actions. Snyders films don't.

He does not seem to control the penetrative aspects of his laser beams outside of the first scene we see the beams in when he only melts part of a gun a man is holding without beaming through the whole man. Even we, the audience, might not be seeing how many homes or lives his lasers are devastating. They reach off-screen in many instances, and there's no telling how far out they could continue to penetrate targets.

Why doesn't Homelander's heat vision cauterize wounds?
I think because there’s a pressurized concussive element to it. Either way it’s so hot it’s skips cauterization and goes straight to melting flesh. Although we do see cauterization when he fries Stilwell because he can control the intensity.

The show is about superheroes being common place, owned by corporations, leased to cities for protection - starring in movies, holding promotional contracts and endorsements. Homelander is the "main" hero, but the most twisted.
