Failed camp on Great Mis Tor

- Опубліковано 30 гру 2020
- I decided to get out for a snowy wild camp, the last of 2020 and headed to Great Mis Tor. Things didn't go to plan though as I forgot my pole top tent protector (tennis ball) and could have ended up with a fire in the tent! Be careful when cooking in the vestibule guys, I take as much care and keep as safe as possible but things can go wrong!

Wasn't a failed camp. It was successful as you made it safely home! It was a learning experience, and a test of your skills. And you passed the test by making the sensible decision to strike camp and go home.
Defo a right decision 👍 cheers for the comment
Thanks for sharing the lesson with us, glad you got back home safe.
Thank you. Yes it was a lesson learnt for me too. Never leave home without my balls!!! 😂
Dartmoor is only about an hour from us! It was absolutely not a failed camp, your gear let you down and you got back safely. These things happen and you handled it, all a learning experience. Xxx
It was defo a learning experience...... never forget your balls 🤣 x
Happy new year, Glad you got home safe ❤
Thanks buddy. Happy New year to you too 👍
Great watch and info👍. Thank you👍😊
Thanks buddy. Shame it wasn't a longer camp 😂 atb 👍
I had exactly the same happen to me in October with my Lanshan 2 on the South West Coastal Path. At 1am the whole thing collapsed on me! I was on a cliff edge and ended up bunking in with my mate who has a 1 person tent - it was very cosy! I now no longer use the carbon pole with a pointy end, I just use my Nordic Pole which has a wide curved handle and fits perfectly. I do love your tennis ball idea though! Glad to hear you are safe and I'm sure there will be many more snowy wild camps to come! Happy hiking - Julia
Thanks Julia. I will not be going anywhere without my trusty tennis balls now!! Lesson learnt 😂 and hopefully this lockdown ends so I can get out again in some snow before spring, fingers crossed. Happy New year and happy camping! 👍
Bad luck mate and all the best for next time. Happy New Year. 🎉
Cheers dave. Happy New year to you too buddy 👍
It takes humility ( an increasingly unfashionable positive quality ) to share your fails. But it also helps to keep others safe by learning from your mistakes. Much kudos to you sir.
Thanks mark. I've since upgraded my tennis balls to a pole mushroom. Won't be forgetting that again 👍
I could have tried a bodge fix with something to increase the pole head size but don't want to chance it in that weather. As much as I'd loved to have had my first ever snowy wild camp it wasn't worth the risk.
@@NoviceWildCamper lol. How was your wild camp Monday ? I had the best camp of my life. That was a hell of a sunset and sunrise wasn’t it. Hope you had a good time.
I was low down so didn't really see any sunset but was a stunning clear night. Just a nice relaxing one I break me back in. 🙏👍
So glad everything worked out well for you. Great lesson for all of us. Just stumbled onto your channel and looking forward to watching more of your journeys. Seems we have the same interest!
Thanks Kathy. Much appreciated. I am going to be popping another up soon albeit a lockdown one 👍
What a shame, it was all going so well too! Glad you made it back safely. Happy New Year👍👍👍
Cheers Anthony. You too buddy. See you in the new year 👍
Damn unlucky with the shelter. Good job you were up and about. A lesson learnt - you won't forget the tennis ball now. ATB
Defo. Even going to buy a mushroom cap now to go with it. Cheers for the comment 👍
Wow...very glad that didn't end worse. Gutted for you, but at least its something you can put behind you after you get it sorted.
Yeah could have been worse. At least I got packed up and home OK. Cheers buddy 👍
Glad you made it home safe.
Yeah it was a good decision to bail I think rather than try a temporary fix. Annoying to miss my first snow camp though. 😔
i have just received my iron wall onetigris hot tent but have not used it as i am waiting for my stove to arrive but i am so glad i just watched your vid, i am very sorry that happened to you but also very happy you uploaded this to warn people like myself so i thankyou i will be taking half a tennis ball with me on my first camp so all the best and happy new year!!
No problem buddy. You can also buy "mushroom" pole toppers that fit on top of the pole and do the same thing. Thanks for watching 👍
First time watching you but was seriously impressed at how well you coped, one thing I noticed was that you have a coke bottle with you; if you happen to forget your tennis ball again use the bottle cap and put it into a spare sock or piece of clothing to prevent slippage. The Tennis ball is a good idea but should not be your only way to prevent failure of the tent. Two is one and one is none, always have a back up.
Cheers Graham. From my days of scuba diving I had the same principals. This time I simply forgot. I could have used something else when I set up but in all honesty I thought that I really shouldn't have needed to as the tent shouldn't need it but hey ho, we live and learn. Cheers for watching and commenting buddy.
Ouch!!! At least tou lived to tell the tell. Good video up until then though. Take care and happy new year!
Cheers trev. Yeah could have been worse. Thanks for watching and happy new year to you too. Hopefully will be able to get out again soon 🙄👍
That must have been awful in the middle of Dartmoor with bad weather. Glad you got safely home. I definitely need to get to Dartmoor in 2021, I only live about 4 hours along the coast. Have a great New Year and I look forward to your upcoming adventures 🍻✨🍾
Cheers Steve, yes it was a little at least until I got the fire out 😬😂 thanks for watching and the comment. Have a good new years eve! 👍
happy new year mate glad you got home safely, just a minor mistake no harm done, on to the next
Live and learn, that's how we improve 👍 cheers buddy, happy new year to you too!
Glad you made it back mate
Cheers Craig. You get the torch yet?
What a bummer still home safe n sound happy new year mate atb Mark.
Cheers Mark, could have been worse. Happy new year buddy.
The video was great even though you acknowledge it was a fail👌👏👏
It just goes to show what can go wrong and the reason to keep your wits about you. Lots of new people are taking inspiration from wild camping videos and joining in. Many will have never been in the military or just not have the practical skills to have a successful safe experience.
The video was just right 👍
The mic was also up to the job as I've been looking at one.
Another camper has pointed me in the direction of another mic that is attached to the GoPro.
I look forward to your next adventure atb Taff 🤠
Happy New Year 🎉🎊
Cheets taff. Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. It was one little moment of forgetfulness that could have lead to a burnt down tent 🙄 lucky I managed to respond quickly and save it. Have a great new year atb 👍
What a pain. It seems like a bit of a bad design if you have to use half a tennis ball to stop that happening!? I like little things like that though using your initiative to solve a problem👍🏻good work with that, just unlucky with forgetting it! Cheers for the video bud, ATB George 🏕
Cheers George. Yeah I forgot my own tips!!! Won't happen again. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Cool video there mate
It was a bit chilly 😂 thanks. Didn't quite turn out how I wanted though. Atb 👍
Omg I knew that was coming as you’d warned us but I could hardly watch waiting for the tent to collapse..! That must’ve been have been such a shock 😱 Glad you were okay 👍 The mic sounds fab btw! Happy New Year 🌟
It was a bit of a shock, specially with the stove on fire. Took me five minutes before I could get set up to video the aftermath. It was a lot worse before 😂😬 thanks for watching atb 👍
Subbed you back BTW 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Sounds awful... 😟 But you won’t forget your tennis ball again!!
I'll never leave home without my balls again!!! 😂
Good video and well done for continuing to video during your crisis. I saw someone previously use silver reinforced tape around something that you take on a camp. This could then be unwrapped incase of emergency like yours. We'll done for getting back in those conditions 👍
Thanks for the comment lee. I probably should have carried something but I always have the back up plan of being not too far from the car to bail if in alone and in bad weather. I'm not sure I would have trusted a repair anyway to be honest and would probably have bailed anyway rather than risk it but....... all good experience I suppose 😂 thanks for watching 👍
Chalk that one up to experience - and well done for not setting yourself on fire, keeping your head and making it out in one piece!
Actually a good test of your navigational capabilities in challenging conditions.
And also a good gear test.
I know the price & weight is not comparable, but a Tentipi safir 5 would have nailed that storm for breakfast - if you can haul it in your pack! Lol
😂 I've done 25kg before in total but think that safir would have killed me 😬thanks for watching 👍🙏
Such a shame. Hope you manage to get the tent sorted. Must have been a challenging descent back to the car in those conditions.
It wasn't easy but luckily I had logged my route on viewranger so that helped. Think I would have struggled to even see a map in that weather specially as I need glasses to read 😂 covered in snow!! I've repaired with tenacious tape and reckon it will hold as it is fully ripstop so once the tennis ball is back in it shouldn't strain too much. Atb 👍
Nice 1 in the snow - good tip with the ball
I got the hot tent - my brother leant me a stove it weighs a ton
Atb 👍🏽
Yeah I've been looking at the titanium ones. Only weighs a few kilos but really expensive. Atb 👍
I feel good about my little fail now too. Partly solidarity but mostly because this was still a GREAT video. I now realize the fail videos are every bit as captivating as the perfect adventure! Well done! I cant get enough of those massive stones. I assume the wind shapes those right?
Wind and rain. Thousands of years of weather. Its a real mythical place with ancient backgrounds of druids and pre historic farmers and their dwellings. Cheers for watching, hopefully can get out again soon 👍
Nightmare mate.
Made for a good video though 😜
Backpacking light do a pole mushroom for a couple quid it clicks onto your pole and works great.
I dread this kind of thing happening if you were deeper into the moor.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger 💪💪
Happy new year mike 👍
Cheers Dean. I suppose it made a change from the normal uneventful dross I chuck out 😂
I've heard about those mushrooms, might look into it although my balls work good, so the wife says 😂
Blimey, that was a bit epic. Glad you got home OK. Very nice video though, just subbed 👍
Cheers buddy. It was a bit scary but could have been worse so happy with just missing out on a camp and nothing more serious 👍
Gutter mate, a lesson learned tho! Just subbed! Look forward to future vids 👍🏼
Ash
Cheers buddy. I was more upset at missing out on the snowy camp tbh 😂👍 atb Michael
Bloody hell mate, things could have been a lot worse! Glad you're ok! 👍🏻Daz
Yeah, I was lucky I was inside and able to hold the tent up while putting the fire out, could have been a lot worse 😬👍
@@NoviceWildCamper You live to tell the tale and make people aware of what can go wrong, a valuable lesson for everyone...don't leave your balls at home!
@@bewleybrothers never leave my balls at home again 😂
What a shame after walking up 😫
I think I would have tried to put the water from your small coke water bottle into a pan and cut off the top of the bottle making a funnel shape cone keeping the cap on and used that to support the top of your shelter after the pole went through. BUT its easy to say that without being there at the time 🤐 and you probably didn't know how bad the damage was.
Glad you got off safely and there is always a next time 👍
thanks for sharing Mike
ATB Mike
StayCornish😬
PS - the table looks to work well, I can't wait to try mine 👍
Cheers Mike. Yes I was considering a fix but concerned it wouldn't hold so thought it best to bail. Better to be safe than sorry. Glad you like the table 👍
Easier said than done, but would you have been able to do a temporary quick fix on the top of the tent using paracord and or duck tape?
I always carry both in abundance.
Still, you managed to get home safely with an experience to remember.
Great video, thanks for showing us👍
I think if I had tape and parracord i still think I would have packed up and gone home tbh. Just saving q fire makes you think twice about bodging a fix. Safer but sadder bet was to leave. Thanks for watching though atb and happy new year 👍
Gutted for you and how annoying having to abandon camp, especially in horrible conditions.
When bivvying and facing similar issues as you needed the tennis ball for, I’ve used a spare pair of socks balled up. Works a treat and hopefully something you’ll always have in your pack either to sleep in or in case of soggy feet.
I know you probably don’t need to hear this now as it’s too late but may be an option in future. However, I’m guessing this is one of those incidents that means you probably won’t forget your tennis ball ever again.
A bit like me when I boiled milk in my tent and it boiled over and went everywhere 😂
Great video regardless of abandoning camp.
Mic sounds pretty good mate. 👍
All the best
Rob
Cheers Rob. Much appreciated. When I realised I'd forgot the tennis ball I thought, well it doesn't come with it and shouldn't need it really. After it popped through I considered a fix with socks or spare gloves I had but with that wind and not having experienced what could possibly happen i decided to go down the sage route. But yes, will never forget my balls again 😂
Gutted for you buddy, but every day is a school day 👍 got the same mic, they work well, all the best fir new year, Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😊
Cheers Paul, just a shame I missed my first snow camp. Hope you have a good one. Catch up in the new year buddy 👍
Wow that is some snow
Need me some snow camping
It came down heavy when I left. Just so frustrating to have missed a camp in it 😔 cheers buddy!
I have this tent and I love it, but the material is super thin and rips easy. Good thing you didn't have a stove in there!
I did. I said that I managed to put the alcohol stove out while holding the tent up as it could obviously have been much worse 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper oh yea, but a hot tent wood stove would be worse, which I and many use this tent for.
@@escapetheindoors ah yes a wood stove would have been a nightmare. Definitely would have set it on fire. 😬
Nice to meet you and see video. I'd not watched it. What day or night was it? Bit of a bugger others were near you. Have you camped out much? Ever had strangers near before? Keep up good work :)
It was the 27th December. And no mot had someone pitch that close before. Try to get out once or twice a month to dartmoor but only started in July tbh. Cheers for watching 👍
It's a shame such an easy item to forget had such a big impact. I know the importance of the tennis ball, I have one for my Luxe Minipeak II.
Yeah I won't be making that mistake again. Was looking at the mushroom pole ends that backpackinglight offer. Look quite good. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper They are good, I have the larger one they sell, certainly easier to keep clean and stronger than a tennis ball but bulkier. I also grabbed a Robens Pole hanger during lockdown (as there is no lantern loop in the Minipeak). I haven't had chance to use either in anger yet, but I'm looking forward to lockdown easing so I can get back out there. Have you had any issues with the OneTigris tarp pole sinking in soft ground? I'm thinking of using the mushroom on the bottom of the pole to prevent sinking and the tennis ball at the top to prevent tent failure.
@@joehesketh9370 I normally carry 2 halves. One at the top of the pole and one at the bottom. I was thinking if I got the mushrooms I'd cut half the sleeve off to make it more packable as they are a large awkward shape unlike the tennis balls that squash in anywhere.
Glad you got out safely, it could have been a lot worse, It doesn't surprise me about the response from Onetigris, they are starting to show their true colours recently & have heard a few bad reports about after service & customer issues. be safe & keep camping.
Cheers Geo. I was surprised in one way but not on another to be honest. Won't be promoting them anymore 👍
Damn mate you were lucky there it could have been worse with the stove snd flames. Its mad sometimes how a little thing can make a massive difference! Glad you're all good tho and got out there safely 🙏🏼
Is that a light built into your hat? If so what hat is it please?
Many thanks for sharing your experience and look forward to your next adventure 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the lovely comments buddy. And yes it could have been a lot worse. Luckily I got the fire out quick. I won the hat in a subscriber competition but you can get them in most petrol stations. Only around £6, seen them for £20 in some stations so shop around. Its a pretty good hat and rechargeable light to be honest and always handy to have another light source. Thanks again atb michael👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Youre welcome pal. You were good at acting quick there top job 👏🏻
Wow cool what an awesome prize to win! Il have a look cheers mate. Yeah ive got head torches but was thinking for just inside the tent as an extra maybe, like you said alwayd good to have back ups.
Happy New Year have a good'n 🍻😊👍🏻🥳
You too buddy, have a good one!! 👍
Hey, what an ordeal - I feel for you, I know what that's like. I've also had to abandon on a couple of occasions, but not from darkest, storming Dartmoor 🤪.
I found your channel via the Summit or Nothing shout out vid. I'm on there too but I'm the very last one! I'm not sure if anyone watched that far 🤓
Sub'd your channel. Best of luck for 2021
Jonathan
Cheers Jonathan. Much appreciated. It was a bit scary. Given you a sub back by the way 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Cheers mate, much appreciated. Yeah I know what the feels like. Scary at the time but rewarding once it's all over. And then I find I can't wait for the next one 👍
Exactly. Just can't get out now 🙄
Nightmare mate! Are you repairing it or replacing it? I've got the same mic but not used it yet, have been using the boya shotgun one instead which has had mixed success lol. That lapel mic sounded decent. Do you leave the power off on yours or switched on? I've not messed with mine too much, just a quick test
Switched off as its connected to the phone. You only swith on if its a camera for power. I've done a fix with tenacious tape for now so see how it goes. My fault for not bringing my balls 🤣
@@NoviceWildCamper sound, I thought so. Well it sounds great, I'll have a go on my next video. Fingers crossed the tent holds up, tenacious tape is a great product 🙂👍
Subbed
Cheers buddy. Much appreciated. Have a great new year! 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper you to mate
sorry not your fault, its a design flaw it it needs a tennis ball to make it work. Keep at it, as you say lesson learned. See the positive, an experience to be hiking at night in the snow!
Yes it was definitely a test of my navigation skills 😂 thanks for watching 👍
Had a similar experience on my last Dartmoor trip, pole buggered but that was my error with incorrect guidelines set up. On your tent is it a design flaw or what ? I didn't quite understand why a tennis ball is required ? ( I understand why you use it just why you should ? Puzzling!) HNY and ATB Rob
Hi Rob. You're right it shouldn't be required its just that when I first got it I tried it in the garden and thought it looked a bit strained so always used the ball as back up. I've always been a belt and braces guy with things like this. 10 years of scuba diving does it as I've seen so many things break in dangerous situations without a back up. The reinforced point is just very small so it's easy for the pole to slip out when tensioning so I used the ball to help with that. My bad for forgetting it. Onetigris aren't interested in helping out said it's my fault 🙄 atb and happy new year! 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper understand now , what a shame OT won't help. Goes to show what customer services can be like when things go bad , take care mate Rob
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But, in hindsight, maybe you could have padded the top of the pole with a glove, or a hat, or something from your kit. Obviously, once the damage occurred there was nothing left to do but abandon. Glad you got back safely. It will serve to remind me to pack a tennis ball, should I ever go teepee camping.....
I did think about it when I realised I'd left the tennis ball behind but then thought well, it isn't designed to use a tennis ball an would work without but, lesson learned. ATB 👍
What an ordeal ! Would you get the one tigris again or do you think the materials simply aren't up to standards ?
I think the stress section isn't up to high wind with just the pole end in it. If I had my tennis ball fitted it wouldn't have been a problem as I had been in worse wind before and it was fine if you check through my other vids. I love the tent and I do think it's good but could be made better and their customer service wasn't great albeit slightly my fault for not having the pole dead centre. I have put it up since and it is very hard to get it dead centre when you are tightening around the outside edges. I still love the tent though, just so much space for such little weight and pack size. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Using half a tennis ball is definitely a good tip. For emergency repairs on the spot, a small roll of duct tape can also be quite useful. Cheers.
@@cyrilhaessig27 yes I've now got some tenacious tape rolled up in my bag 👍
Try a DD pyramid XL with one man inner tent! Spacious, bomb proof and you already know the benefits of a pyramid tent system!
It's too small. Mine it 3.2m across and I just fit in without hitting the mesh inner so won't fit in a 2.6m version. Due to the angles it massively reduces the inner length 😔
@@NoviceWildCamper point taken
Sorry mate but no tent is bomb proof😉
I have to disagree with you buddy, you didn’t make a mistake,. You should not have to make modifications to a tent to make it usable, this is definitely a design fault. If I were in your shoes it would be going straight back to the shop where I got it from and I would be demanding a refund. This could have ended a lot worse..
Don’t feel bad about bailing, you had little choice.
Cheers. I did contact onetigris and was surprised at their response. They said i didn't put the pole exactly in the middle of the strengthened point so it was my fault. I must admit it's a very small target to hit specially when setting up in low light and a mild blizzard. They offered me a replacement for half price but I said I'd put my video up and if it affects them then so be it as I didn't want to pay anything for another. I have patched it and will be using my faithful tennis ball again next time. 🙄
@@NoviceWildCamper Well after your experience I could never buy one or recommend anyone else does. Very poor customer service. At least you've fixed it and can get out again.
Yeah, I love the tent but won't recommend onetigris. There is another manufacturer that makes one exactly the same size so if anyone asks will send them their way 👍
I was looking at this tent but with such a design flaw like that I won’t bother now. You shouldn’t really need to use half a tennis ball to make it work.
I had a tear in a Vango and it was replaced no questions asked.
☹️
Not you failing to bring a tennis ball for the pole, more of a design fault of the tent. It shouldn't have failed. The manufacturer ought to have made a better pole reinforcement area at the tip of the teepee. Hope your tent is replaced free of charge promptly. Great video otherwise. Cheers.
Hi mick. No they're saying it's my fault and only offered a discount if I buy a replacement. Even told them I'll be noting it in my next video with their response but they don't seem to care. Hopefully people will see my vid and not buy from them or at least use my experience to ensure they don't have the same issue if they already have one. Cheers for watching 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper I'm actually quite angry at onetigris attitude, quite happy for the products to be shown on UA-cam, but won't provide the excellent service that you would expect. And as put me of thinking of buying of them. I really hope you don't me sharing this video on onetigris's twitter. I've left them I nice review of their product, not.
Absolutely. I told them I was putting it out there. Annoyingly they give tents free to bigger youtubers who don't even bother using them yet I paid for it and have sung it's praises publicly. I'm obviously not influential enough 🙄 cheers for watching 👍
This is why you need balls for wild camping ...
😂😂😂 thanks 👍
