Thank you for the great recordings made in Japan 2005 of our beloved Maestro.Praying that God will grant Dmitri's beautiful soul eternal love and peace🙏
As good as this performance is, Hvorostovsky's Almaviva in the 1995 Salzburg production that Frufru refers to is even better. Check out this same aria in the Act 3-4 segment and you will see how completely D.H. immersed himself in this role. His facial expressions, body language, gestures and spoken dialogue constitute acting in the best tradition of the famous Russian schools. Baritones tend to show Almaviva as an unfeeling and manipulative seducer. This shades the opera black and white and emphasizes very strongly Beaumarchais' social concern with upper class decadence. But D.H. plays Almaviva as a man who can be calculating but who nevertheless obsesses after a woman whom he desperately cares for and whom he desperately wants to return the intensity of his desires. This opens the story to a whole other psychological level, bringing out a crucial theme of Mozart's lyric oeuvre -- the at times unbearable conflict between sensuality and propriety. In other productions Susanna retreats from Almaviva out of repulsion but in this Figaro she retreats from Almaviva out of caution in the 'Verrai, non mancherai?' exchange. By being as charming, as intelligent, as aristocratic and as alive as only D.H. could be, his Almaviva elevates and enhances the character of Susanna in that she is able to withstand the powerful temptation of the Count for the sake of her deep love of Figaro. And it also elevates the character of the Countess who acquires reasons for remaining in love with her amazing (even if amazingly wayward) husband, making her forgiveness of the Count both more reasonable and more believable.
I can't believe how crystal clear the HD image is!! O_O Also, a great redition (as always) from Hvorostovsky, i will be using this as a reference for musical aspects when i sing this. Thanks a lot for posting.
I am a big fan of Dmitri and this is an awesome performance. But his voice is a bit too heavy for Mozart and Rossini. Keenlyside and Hampson sounded much more suitable for this aria. Dmitri reigns over dramatic repertoire.
Vero.Dima è divino e in MOZART

The 1995 Salzburg production has awful decors and clothes making the performance not worth to see.
