I cannot think of another baritone who could sing Ombra Mai Fu without producing an abomination. Only Hvorostovsky succeeded with this aria in such a low register, and, OH MY!!!, what a success! Thanks to modern recording technology people will be able to marvel at this wonder for as long as the human race can survive.
The man is dead, but his talent will live forever. This is one of the exceptionally rare examples of modern media serving the nec plus ultra of our culture well. I am eternally grateful to frufurJ for putting it here on UA-cam.

Bryn Terfel saw Dmitri intended to start his program for Cardiff Singer of the World with this aria and thought, "Well, that's easy, maybe he won't get far. But the moment he heard Dmitri's voice, and even more, how eh interpreted the song, he said he was ready to be the first to sign up to his fan club. He knew in his heart Dima would win.

Poor Bryn was the favorite until a guy with film star good looks and the voice of an angel appeared on the stage.
Lord, I miss this man. Love for life, and a life in music, flowed out of him like a fountain.
He is the singer we Low-Voices look up to. His presence, voice, grace, and superb technique, pitch, resonance, vibrato, and performance style are almost peerless, and without compare.

Thank God we live in an age where we can still listen to voices like his, even if he's no longer with us. Such a tragedy to lose him at such a young age. What a voice - what a man and so much missed. I was never lucky enough to see him live, but I treasure these recordings.

So used to hearing this performed by mezzos and counter tenors. His version is amazing. A voice so incredibly powerful modulated to bring the beauty of the piece to the fore. His passing was a terrible loss to the world of opera and to music at large. Thank you, Dmitri...

I think he won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition after the judges heard the first few bars of Ombra Mai Fu. Will we ever hear such a voice again? May he forever rest in peace 🌷🌷🌷🌷

TRIBUTE What we lost in Dmitri Hovorostovsky -------------------------------------------------------------------He was the kindest, friendliest, most immaculate of opera singers.
In a world where egos rage and talent is measured by the size of fees, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, who died today, stood apart, in a class of his own. No-one ever had a word to say against him.
Raised in Siberia, an only child, he won a couple of Russian competitions before bursting onto the world scene, running away with the BBC’s Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1989, ahead of the hotly-favoured Welsh baritone, Bryn Terfel
He went on to play every major opera house in the world, charming one and all with the ease of his musicality and his unfailing good nature. He was the foremost Eugene Onegin of our time, the sexiest Don Giovanni, the dominant Rigoletto, a role he sings in his final recording, released just last week. It would be invidious, at this moment of grief, to single out one performance or another: all were stamped uniquely with his character
He was also a formidable concert recitalist, eagerly sought as a partner by the leading sopranos. He wore his fame with humility, ever alert to the needs of the less fortunate and frequently turning up to sing in charity fund-raisers.
After a failed first marriage, he found deep contentment in London with Florence and their children.
Like every Russian artist, Dmitri was put under considerable pressure to declare his support for Vladimir Putin. He bravely and notably refrained from doing so, all the while continuing to give recitals in far-flung parts of Russia where he was loved as a man of the people.
In quarter of a century he never put a foot wrong. And when cancer struck he handled his shrinking horizons with delicacy and unfailing candour. At 55, he was cut off in his prime.

Dmitri is a glorious, larger-than-life and ultra-charismatic person/artist. He does not try. He just is. And therein lies the winning streak for such fortunate creatures. He can sing Mickey Mouse in holy temple style and the Ave Maria in Disneyland mode and still pull it off. It is an ever-presence that shines through even when he sings Baroque. So, why do we battle about weather or not he should sing Baroque? Just listen. He has such tremendous charm and phenomenal technique - he just stands there, solid like a rock and the voice simply seems to flow out of him effortlessly. We're so lucky just to hear him (yes, and to see him)!

Fritz Wunderlich is a tenor, so it's difficult to compare but anyway F.W. is great, I put him in the neighbourhood of Jussi Björling; such a terrible pity and bad luck he died so young.
