Thursday, July 2nd 2020, Binter Canarias ATR 72-500 just departed to Porto Santo, a short 12 minutes flight, and just after takeoff, a mayday was declared by the pilots.
Condor was about to land but went to a holding pattern. Eventually, the ATR returned to the field and landed safely, with everyone leaving the plane as normal.
Smoke on board was the cause of the mayday.

Great video. Before Swissair 111 crash, a situation of smoke on board was informed to ATC as a PAM, PAM, PAM, but the new procedure is to declare MAYDAY immediately after notice smoke on board.

I've often watched GJ whilst in Lanzarote or flew it myself in msfs. To see this is one of them films you dont want to see ever but you know it happens. They landed safely and that's the main thing

They had better have a good explanation for their declaration of emergency when they forced another aircraft into a holding pattern when they were seeking to land. The ATR crew's comment to ATC after landing that they didn't have a critical situation raises questions.
I was surprised with that speech also, they declare emergency, and then everything normal...
These guys declares a MayDay and when asked what the problem was replied “we didn’t loose anything we just have to check something”. There is an opening for baggage loaders i’ve heard. Better apply my friend.
They said "we don't need anything"

Bit weird declaring Mayday and then nothing happens, but witnesses onboard reported lot's of black smoke and burning smell!

Olá, o último acidente neste aeroporto tem mais de 40 anos, um Boeing 727 da TAP, em um dia de muito mau tempo :)
E na altura a pista tinha 1/3 do tamanho de hoje

Hello, its not required the steep climb, but normally this ATR's climb really fast after takeoff here!

In TFN and LPA Binter and the other local regional carriers always do self pushback with their Atr-72s. I’ve seen them lots of time there

How is that dangerous? They didn't push back all the way to the runway, just to the taxiway. Takes a lot less time to do it that way than to have a tug hitch up.

Did ATC not ask for nature of emergency, souls and fuel on board?
The plane declared mayday just 2 minutes after takeoff and the flight ahead was just 12 minutes. They asked what happened, the crew said black smoke onboard, but that everything was fine... was a false mayday in my opinion!
I have booked a flight with them and wish I hadn't seen this vid.
Why not? They are completely safe!

Essaa manobra se chama "power back" e é utilizada pelo empuxo reverso dos motores.

It's very common here, both Swiftair and Binter ATR's working here do the same, it's called Powerback.
