What i love about H mart is that they created a pemium asian grocery shopping experience. By premiuim, I don't mean expensive because they beat out most places in terms of price. What i mean is that if you go to a H mart, the produce and fish and meat are always fresh. I have been to H marts in NY, Atlanta, Seattle, and Chicago, and none of them failed me in that regards. I currently live in a small town, and if you go to an asian grocery store, often times it'll be slightly dusty, the frozen section hasn't been restocked in forever, and the produce is only fresh about once a week if you're lucky. However, in my town that's the best I got so that's where I go.

I remember going to H Mart for the first time as a little kid with my mom. Being so used to American stores where everything is more compact, seeing such an insane variety of products going so far around made me feel like I was in a whole other world. When I grew up, I figured it would become "smaller" to my more mature mind and grown self. But nope! Twenty years old and I'm still walking in circles, lost as ever. It's become a great tradition to me and my friends to go to H Mart, shop for a meal to share, and come home and watch a Studio Ghibli film. I absolutely love it, and I hope to give my future kids the same experience of such a wonderful place.

Occasionally, we come here to either shop, to eat at the food court, or just for fun. A simple drive here is absolutely exciting, as I am a lover of Korean culture and cuisine. 😁🇰🇷

I’ve been shopping at H-Mart since I was a kid they were cheap and by far the best quality but now price have gone up along with the being plenty of competition not just from not just from other international markets a growing and expanding isles and choices from your traditional American grocery store as they become more aware of the growing ethnic audience and the changing test of their consumer.

    • @Narolfs

tomato totato I'm fairly certain that Japan didn't create raw fish and rice wrapped in seaweed. Being a coastal country, they're going to eat fish and have seaweed. The proximity of Japan to Korea is coincidence. Just because rice is eaten in the Americas and throughout Asian, doesn't mean they copied one another.
You are right about instant noodles though. That's Japanese creation, but just as pizza was an Italian one, it doesn't mean a culture can't adopt it and make it uniquely their own!

Cons of H Mart: costs an arm and leg compared to other local Asian markets and even more compared to abroad (it's like 5 bucks for small bag of chips that costs a buck fifty when in seoul), always crowded
Pros of H Mart: I've gotten little sheep hot pot base there on sale, and 포카칩 chips (sadly no onion ones), the $10 bowls of hot pot meat are easy to grab for a special occasion

Ive been to other asian markets in my area but, happened to come across h-mart by accident. I was looking for soup dumplings and google lead me there. I was surprised that it was a grocery store since I was expecting a restaurant. Mr. Dumplings is the name of the restuarant in the food court (among many other eatery's). I was pleasantly surprised and impressed at the selection of foods. Different fruits and vegetables. Needless to say, i got my soup dumplings and dumpling soup for dinner tonight.

My town has a huge asian population, mostly Indian and Chinese but Korean comes third. We have a small indian grocery store that only Indians know about (and most non-Indian kids because we have 2nd gen Indian friends. Indians usually live separate from the rest of us. If whites, blacks, arabs, and non-indian asians can live in 1 neighborhood, why can’t Indians?) Back to the topic, my town has so many Asians yet there are not really many Asian grocery stores. We have a lot of authentic restaurants, but that’s it. If I had to guess it is because Indian families tend to cook Indian food with ingredients you won’t find at Harris Teeter or Walmart, but other groups tend to cook American food with rice, or Asian food with American ingredients. I guess it is cultural differences. I could be wrong I am just going off experiences as a white kid who stayed for dinner a few times at my friends houses.

Check the expiration date on EVERYTHING YOU BUY. I didn't and came home with half of my items outdated by A YEAR! Not a week or month...A YEAR. Tons of "fresh" jarred Tobagi kimchi in the refrigerated section...which is supposed to be a top brand...expired a year ago. Couldn't take anything back, because I'd have to drive 50 miles down and 50 back.

Me too, I'm cross that Eater didn't think any viewer would actually care to know where the host was! Well WE would like to know! LOL Not impressed with that silly oversight and I really do hope that somebody out there will clue us both in on which supermarket location this episode was filmed in. I'd love to go!

I wouldn’t eat anything from the deli section at the hmart near me, nor the prepared foods. I also don’t buy fish or meat there. Doesn’t look fresh at all. I don’t know if its because it’s a smaller store so there’s less product turn over, but I don’t want to get food poisoning!

I'll be going to H mart soon and to be honest i'm nervous. What if i do something that could be wrong or stupid? I'm not asian but i'm really interested in the different culture and love learning about everything but there isn't much that i know about well Korean culture ( is that okay to say?) But i'm just really self conscious that i will do something stupid or weird and i don't wanna do something that might be disrespectful. I also don't know what to get as a non asian, i mean i'm just lost and nervous. What do i do!
