Chef Mandy is no joke. She's real and honest. She's showing you a lot of inside information and sharing the beautiful world of Chinese meals and knowledge.
I lived in San Francisco for 5 years. I had several employees who were either Chinese or Filipino who often took me into Chinatown for lunch making sure I tested a variety of dishes. I miss those days and thought my days of trying new Chinese dishes was over. Stumbling on to your UA-cam channel has inspired me to try Chinese cooking and so far I have been mostly successful because of your very well presented videos. Just wanted to say thank you.
I’m Chinese American and I always thought Chinese cuisine is very difficult to master. I watched my mom and grandma cook a lot, but got overwhelmed trying to keep track of what they used. Thanks for this video! Incredibly helpful
I love your recipes and your suggestions for best ingredients. From selecting ingredients, preparation, proper chopping, seasoning, etc. you are very precise and all your recipes are fantastic and taste very authentic. Thanks so much.
This was a nice rundown of the important items. I will definitely watch this again before I go to my local market! Thanks for taking the time to make this!
I was going to skip this but then the first 2 tips about eggplant and Bok choy at 1:40 got me hooked to the end. Also, if you have the time and patience, don't be intimidated by the Chinese characters on packages. I use Google translate on camera. Now that she has told us what to look for, it was easy to narrow down the grocery list for brands that are ideal and available in the store for future visits.
As a foodie who appreciates foods from around the world let me say Thank You! This was an amazing video! I love the level of detail you went through for each category. This type of video is literally a style that people would love to see more of, including me! 🎉
I absolutely loved this video! Going down the aisles and aisles of products easily becomes overwhelming. I hope you're able to do another video like this some time in the future. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into making these videos.
This was just what I needed. We have a several large Asian grocery stores in my area but I rarely go because I end up with a cart full of candy and snack food because it’s the only thing I know what to do with.
Mandy, this video has been extremely helpful to me in attempting to navigate the typical Asian market. Thank you so much. Would you consider making a video on Asian cut meats for purchase? I hope so.
Wow, thank you so much! I live in NC, USA, and I have two Asian markets near me. I shop at both, but rarely is the any English speaking people working there to ask questions. I can only read English, so I am lost in trying to figure out what’s what & where it is, lol! This is a big help!
Excellent video.. I was actually proud of myself that I already knew a lot of this. The brands she recommends are the right ones to get. I've been using them for years.
Holy cow, what a treasure trove of useful information. This was a fantastic trip through the store and your tutorials on the many products was very useful. Thanks for taking the time to not only explain what each item was good for but what to look at to pick the best one. You're the tops Mandy!
I love the cooking information. You are so knowledgeable. I've learned a lot. I must say though that half of the enjoyment of watching your videos is the positivity and happiness you convey. You seem like a wonderful human being.
Thank you Mandy. My pantry is geared for Italian, Mexican, Cajun/Southern, BBQ. We love Asian food and your video is a very good source to start a Asian section for our pantry. God Bless and Merry Christmas 🙏
I'm an Italian chef but I love cooking Asian food at home. I love these kinds of videos. Thank you so much for sharing. I've been watching for about seven years and it's only getting better. Great job!
I love going to asian supermarkets... i search for my favorite black sesame candy. I like to try unfamiliar produce. This content is like gold to me. Thank you!
Where have you been my whole life?!!!!! I'm cooking Christmas dinner and taking notes from you at the same time. Thank you so much for making this video! You're the best! Happy holidays!
What a beautiful market, thank you for showing us. The market in my town is really run down, it’s nice to see one so clean and organized! Americans aren’t taught how to use our own ingredients let alone foreign ones, thank you for the lesson.
THANK YOU for this video!!!! I am a Minnesotan who loves many foods. You are helping us people that didnt grow up with learning your recipes Thank you for teaching us!!❤
Hello Mandy, Thank you for this informative video, which will be very helpful for many "newcomers" to Chinese cuisine. As a German myself, I was part of a Chinese family that ran a restaurant in Germany for several years. In the kitchen of the restaurant, I learnt how to cook original Chinese dishes for the family and special guests/occasions (although most of the dishes on the menu were adapted to European tastes). I don't know if you mentioned it in one of your cooking videos, but there are also big differences in sesame oil. Many, if not most, sesame oils in Asian supermarkets are mixed with sunflower oil or similar. A reference to this would also have been very informative. Really good Chinese sesame oil is 100% pure. Although it is a little more expensive, the more intense flavour means that you generally need less of it, which more than makes up for the price difference and increases the enjoyment considerably. P.S. I love your videos. Best regards from Berlin Serge
@@doodahgurlie As long as sesame oil (made from roasted sesame seeds) is 100% pure, it doesn't really matter whether it comes from China, Japan, Korea or anywhere else. However, this cannot be applied 1:1 to (naturally brewed) soy sauce, as Japanese soy sauce is generally saltier than Chinese soy sauce.
I go to an Asian market about once a month and love the produce section best. Besides the Chinese eggplant and baby bok choy (my favorite), the fresh mushrooms are outstanding. Less expensive than chain markets and more variety. Also the zucchini, melons, and kiwis are always fresh. I learned a lot from your video. Thank you.
This video is overwhelming, really diving deep into the realm of chinese cooking it makes you realize that it's a completely different culinary background altogether. Makes you feel like in order to keep a clean (not cluttered) kitchen you'd have to redo your entire pantry, and stock only this type of item, and relearn how to cook. I really appreciate we have this channel to study chinese cooking and to be able to learn the different recipes and techniques that are used there, hosted by someone with that background. It's overwhelming but I hope to learn things from it.
Thank you for this video. It’s great to know what dishes to make with left over ingredients used in new dishes. I planted garlic chive in my garden when it was in a front side yard. We moved the garden 15 years ago to the back yard to increase the size and make raised beds. The garlic chive still are thriving in the front side yard. We planted them 20 years ago! They get watered about 4-5 times over summer as it gets super dry here, and the rain carries them over winter. They are hardy little clumps of plants that thrive when established in a usda zone8-9. We are lucky to have a large Chinese populations, as well as several other Asian populations in our area, so we have several Asian markets near us. At least 8 markets, so we get great prices. I love cooking many Asian foods, making my own noodles, and experimenting with new dishes. I’ve made most of the recipes in your videos. Please keep the recipes coming.
I love how consistantly, perfectly informative you are. Every time i become curious about something, you're already answering my questions in the simplest way possible. It's very relaxing. Big love for what you do.
Amazing video! This is a thorough shopping guide for anyone who appreciates Asian food but, like me, can't differentiate good from bad products. I usually go for the more expensive ones, whenever I see too many options to choose from. Thank you for sharing all these tips with us.
I have a market near me but no one speaks English and the ones that speak Spanish or English have no idea about the products. This video helped a ton. Thanks
Hi Mandy! I just want to say thank you SO MUCH for the effort you put into this channel. I love it. I would love some “what I eat in a day/week” videos too!
There's something very overwhelming but also inspiring about going to a market selling cuisine so different from your own family's. Like, this is more than I could *ever* learn, but also, the world is so huge! It has room for so many completely different and amazing flavors to explore!
Watched a few Asian Grocery store tour videos and yours was by far the very best! So detailed with needed specifics outlining differences between ingredients and brands. Can't wait to get started.
This is such an incredible video!!! I love how you have suggestions for dishes to make with each item you educate us on. Sometimes I feel so lost because even if I know what items to buy, I don't always have many ideas on what dishes to use those ingredients in. This video is like an ultimate guide for me! I also love how you talk about how to store these items efficiently, as well as showing us how to pick out the best vegetables, and even analyzing the ingredients of products. I feel like you're my mom teaching me how to grocery shop all over again :) I've loved your channel for years Mandy, thanks so much for this!
Your presentation here with the accompanying links ranks in importance and pedigree with the most revered works in Oriental cooking. Your ancestors would be proud. You have distilled here the hard-earned knowledge and wisdom gleaned from thousands of years in the kitchens of The Far East and I do wish for you the praise and appreciation you deserve. Thank you!
You are absolutely wonderful. You explain the things that I think most people would want to know about every product in such an easy and understandable way. Keep doing what you're doing. Massive thanks and I wish you nothing but the best of luck.
Thank you so much Mandy! this video is super helpful to me being in US for these years, I still haven't fully figure out my local asian supermarket, love love love this video!
I am very fortunate to have three very large Asian Markets in my city. Your tour is just spot on and helps those not familiar with all the choices that can be over whelming …😊

Thank you, Mandy! This video is incredibly helpful and very much appreciated! I've cooked wonderful Chinese dishes because of you, but panic every time I have to go to an Asian market. I have no clue what's what. A shopping series would be amazing. 😃
oh wow, this immediately made me think of a series with a week's meal planning, shopping, and then teaching how to make the dishes for the week. That would be so cool, but I'm sure tons of work too.
I LOVE this video because you dropped nuggets of culinary wisdom everywhere. Please do more videos and show us how to pick various fresh produce, how to prep them, store them, etc. Definitely would love more info on sauces in the future like doubanjiang, fermented black beans, etc.
Season Greetings, Mandy! What a wonderful relaxing Shopping Experience Video to watch as you strolled through the aisles, unhurried to explain the Who, What and Why of the items in detail. Kudos to Lee Asian Market who could pat themselves on the back for having such a vast array of items, neatly organized and beautifully labeled in the produce section. 💜
11:39 You should create a 'Short' from the discussion about 5 Spice... It's hysterical. Great video, good editing, not a lot of wasted time walking around. Thank you!
This is most helpful. I've been using the same suite of ingredients for a long while. Having you introduce new ingredients and descriptions of where and when to use will definitely improve my journey with authentic Asian dishes!! Thank you so very much. Sher sher
How come you know so much! This is absolutely incredible! Wow! I also love it when you go in to a supermarket and tell us not to buy this and how to get what! This is so real! Wonderful! Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing your specific detailed knowledge of all these ingredients and flavours and things. Bean paste, noodle types and oyster sauce have been key areas of interest for me and you have helped understand why I like the flavours I like.
Prepare to feel overwhelmed, like your first day at a new high school in a new town but a master chef after you return home with your groceries. I would suggest having a few recipes ingredient lists also. A store that I shop at in Los Angeles, Ca, has the most amazing staff, friendly, helpful, but go during non peek hours as the stores parking lot can fill up. I generally walk around to the next street (after my shopping) and purchase prepared Peking Duck and a veggie dish with black mushroom the same day
