It is the most brutal album of their catalogue. Had it been been edited down and sounded less "raw" it would have been great.
It's a great working out soundtrack, and there are some fantastic moments in there. The bonus dvd with the live takes and a normal snare still stands strong. Now Reload...🤐

It's funny how i have not heard this album since it came out in 2003 and when i saw you were doing this video, my immediate thought was that there were maybe 2 salvageable tracks on this ("Some Kind Of Monster" would be good if it was cut in half, and "Sweet Amber" had the bones of a good track but this version leaves a bit to be desired) and was curious what my take and yours would be in 2022. It's hilarious to find that literally the only 2 tracks you gave anything of a positive sentiment to were those 2 tracks haha.
On paper, this probably sounded like the exact Metallica album people thought they wanted to hear at the time (a raw sound, not overproduced, bringing back elelements of their thrash roots, some Meshuggah-esque riffs here and there, little old school punk influence, not overthinking it and just laying it down, etc) but in execution it is a total fucking disaster. James was also in no shape to be writing or recording vocals at the time, he was a total fucking wreck as you can see in the doc (the only worthwhile thing to come out of this mess) and kinda trusted in the process that Bob Rock and Lars were laying out. It;s shameful that Bob and Lars didn't just put this on hold and wait until James was in a better place to come back and finish it instead of publicy embarassing him like this, how do you do a buddy like that? You can tell Kirk knew this was trainwreck from the doc as well and he's the only one who really comes out this looking good, there's a handul of good solid riffs buried under the noise here, Trujillo was a good fit for the sound they were going for as well but the mix does not do him any favors. There was something salvageable here and with a different producer and overall different goal/vibe they might have actually done some great work here but as it stands now it was a total failure.
btw there is a much shorter version of "Some Kind Of Monster" with a far superior mix that is on the "Some Kind Of Monster" [EP] that was released in conjunction with the documentary.

Shoot me again, Hetfield always writes from the heart, he was clearly so depressed about the material that he craved a bullet, and another....

I think they just thought that whatever they wrote would be as good as any other metal album that year, wrong. It's worse than a bunch of school kids who have only played their instruments for one summer.
