The 1988 through 1990 Honda CR125s are notorious for the Stators giving erratic signal. Also for the Stator covers not sealing. Oh yeah and one last thing surface the Intake Manifold. Other than those things they are bullet proof. I raced them for a few years. And when running top shape it should be faster than Charlie's CR125, as in 1998 Honda started going backwards in the power department on their 125's and they actually got slower.

Im guessing crank bearing and seals. Trans oil sucked into combustion chamber fouling plug.

I would have told him to throw on the pipe in the add for full 700. They really don't run right with thrashed expansion chamber. He just threw that new one on to sell it. Tricky. I bought one similar a few years back. An 89 got it for 300. Sold it for 1300 after putting in 400.
2 stroke power valves change the exhaust port timing as the engine speed increases which greatly broadens the power curve.

Looked like a 1990.
White frame and the upside down forks.
The oringed exhaust flanges helped power wise. I made my own flange when we raced Hondas. Vinton orings tapered the flange to match the port top to bottom and the side were straight. Made a good power increase.
Local tu er wanted to buy 5 from me and then copy them so I didn't make him any. I tried to have them made but tried to have them cast and should have had them machined from billet. No need for a 10k mold

Single ring probably fried from low coolant overheating . Had same thing on a Cr125 a 99 . Check jetting with possibly pipe swaps in the past . Mystery dig in !
was your ring welded to the piston? And on what side of the piston did the damage happen?
2vintage my ring was welded to my piston on my 125 from the exhaust side mainly. It was cause over heating running the carbs lean. Or water pump seal. These are all cheap fixes

Won't matter if the power valves are stuck chuck just a lesson will still start just won't make full power I'd say it's something to do with the ignition timing
I think your spark is too weak and that little bit of compression is blowing it out. One thing that might work, and it has many times for me, is to remove the spark plug cap from the wire, cut 1/4" off and screw the spark plug cap back on the wire. If everything else is good, you should see a fat blue spark. Check for a loose ground wire or corrosion where the ground wire contacts the frame. Nice bike to work on. Those were very quick and the power valve was a nice addition that year. It gave the pipey engine some power in the low revs without sacrificing any power at high rpms. I love high rpm power bands like the 125s have, but always wanted a little more down low (less wear on the clutch coming out of corners) and the engineer that came up with the power valve should receive a medal lol

Not oil down the cylinder to gain compression use atf but it’s obviously to low on compression do a hone and new rings if the cylinder isn’t grooved
Super clean bike you got yourself Joe, take the top end off, give it a new piston and a hone, check the stator is rotated to the correct position also buddy
You got a deal I payed 1000 for my 90 cr 125 this February. And it was in worse shape but had way better compression mine had 150 psi and would start first kick after you blip the throttle to give it a little fuel like two three times. 100 psi probably won’t fire it up. Just took the motor to have it rebuilt figured 30 years on a original bottom end is about time to give her new life again but ran pretty good .

Clean bike what’s a full rebuild on a two stroke! Start with top end go from there, as soon as the head comes of you will know.
Thats crazy that was my old bike! When I had it it had different plastics but thats my exact bike and I sold it to Kyle too but it ran really good when I had it.

Nice bike. I just bought a 1990 CR250r for $700. Previous owner had it for 18 years and stuck it in a barn for the last few years. Bike is in pretty good shape but only has 42 psi of compression. Have not tore into it yet to see if it has a stuck ring from sitting or not but we will see what happens when I do.

Hold in the clutch
Pull the flywheel and clean with contact cleaner . Your getting weak spark. Bike should run with 90 psi and above. But you do need a new top end.
My son just got one of these 3 weeks ago for 1300 in Ontario Canada guy said it's full of gas he drive for 3 hours and it seized up he never out oil in it grr sold it for 900 with blown piston wish I lived in the states your bike prices are mad cheap
When you get them damn bikes especially Two Strokes always change the spark plug your they're kicking away trying to check it for spark how do you know that old plug isn't bad always put a new plug in it first then check Spark and don't forget to rev it cold

That bike will run all day long on 90psi. Spray some carb clean in the carb while your bro is kicking it over. She will start guaranteed. Needs a good carb clean throw a little marvel mystery oil down the spark plug hole to condition those ring and you’ll get a year of run time still.

2vintage cant believe the price of 2Ts over here at the moment. clean carb jets, test ignition coil, check stator for alignment , spark must be pretty weak i couldn’t see any on video.

Btw, one thing, mine had low compression and wouldnt start up, i opened up the top end and i found out that the piston ring was stuck. So you guys did that all for nothing, or this bike has a different problem

R u serious?! I've been looking for a cr125 for months and I cant find anything under 1200
You do know that the rings don't open and close right? I'll bet someone accidentally ran straight gas in that bike. I had a 1990 CR 125 when I was a kid ill let you now they came with shitty frames. I cracked mine. But I can say the motor was bulletproof because I rode mine hard! 90% of the hrs I put in it I ran it full throttle. Check the corner below the drive sprocket that's a weak spot for those bikes. If you spend $700 on a bike a simple change in fluids will be a teardrop in the ocean, you didn't take into account why the seller took off the aftermarket pipe. It suggests it's barely above a parts bike
the rings expand in the cylinder though. If the ring is stuck to the side of the piston it will lose compression.
a basic indication that the piston wasn't swapped when it should've been. I'm curious to see what the cylinder wall looks like based on my guess I'll bet that the rings broke causing the piston to flop around before the entire motor died. Who knows where the pieces of metal made their way to
I doubt the damage is that severe or it wouldn't come close to 90 plus psi on a compression test.
It's just a guess, if and or when someone has to diagnose an engine with questionable compression then id immediately expect a worst-case scenario. In my opinion, a compression test on a cold motor isn't a reliable source. It does give an arguable result though. Maybe just the crank gave out.
Sometimes you get lucky but I always assume the worst. Turning by hand I didn't hear any grinding or metal to metal sounds so if the crank is good it should be a cheap rebuild. With new 125s in th $6000 plus range I would put a few bucks into this one even if I were flipping it.
