Love all the videos!! I'm 53, and grew up riding and racing all through the 1980s. Your videos take me back to when we had to fix our own stuff to keep riding. Keep up the great work! 👍
That 3 wheeler is so clean and new looking after its rebuild, this is how your rebuilds should look when your done with them, keep em clean and looking like new!!!
Joe looks like the start switch had a Scotchlok connector on wires. If it was those are such junk aren’t they. I am retired from owning a marine service business and we loved those. Boat owners loved those to hook up accessories and we loved them because we made money a month after they used them to go out and replace them with marine connectors. But they saved money by doing it themselves ! 😁👍👍
Might be time to sharpen the blades on that belly mower. It should cut better than that. Even in the tall grass. Another great video man. Keep them coming.
Those are the kinds of guys I don’t mind buying things from, the ones that have other running machines in nice shape and can keep them running. Not the guys with a yard full of junk but they swore it ran when parked 👍
The brushes in the starter provide continuity for the circuit and if the brushes aren't touching the armature you won't get a neutral light and the starter won't function.
Joe a quick bleeding trick for the brakes, buy a big syringe, put some transparent gasline on the syringe and push the brake fluide from the bottom of the calipers (bleed screw) with the syringe, air will come right out at top instead lf forcing it down and it takes litterally 20 seconds. Use a ring wrench to close it up while still pushing with the syringe to stop air from getting in.
your videos help bring my mind some peace idk what i have if i just overthink or stress but ur videos are my therapy i thank you so very much man keep it up!
I lifted a bigbear 6 inches with 30 inch tires, very strong in low , Best bikes for hailing firewood , Almost won first place in a mudbog verses a stock 800 canam with 29.5 outlaws
“Carbon tracking” is, also, a thing. You could also undercut the micah on the armature (the material between the copper bars on the armature). I learned a lot, working on the old gear-reduction Chrysler starters, back in the day. Almost EVERYBODY would replace those starters and not repair them..
I love these old work horse 4 wheelers! I have 2 old arctic cats but both are 2 wheel drive. I really need a 4x4 to fix up and use for hauling firewood. Love the videos!
Joe nice job but two suggestions on the Mower/brush-hog, For God's sake sharpen those blades they are bending shit over not cutting it off! Second clean and prep the Battery terminals and just remove the battery at the end of the season taking it with you back to the home shop, leave it on a battery tender over the winter, and in the spring your first trip out to the land take it with you, that way you do not have to buy a new $100.00 battery every season. :)
Can an old man offer some suggestions(s) for your electrical testing? Well- when I used to, need to check continuity in a wire, and I really hated to cut a wire, (like in this starter switch), I would get a pin (like the pins you used to get when you bought a dress shirt, with the ball on one end) and I pushed the pin in the wires, and could prove the pin... -hope this helps? Bryan
Also, when bench testing, find a way to Not arc the solenoid threads. Like throw on a ring terminal to touch the battery cable to. Great content! TFS! Fully agree with the guy who said "it's like therapy"!
Cool! I think that shows integrity that you gave him $200 more than the original price, since it now runs well. I would guess a jet in the carb was gummed up. Maybe gas sitting in the bowl dissolved it. Some dear friends from church gave us a 1987 Big Bear. Carb clean, new intake boot, tires, seat cover and straighten RF control arm fixed it up for my wife. She's an animal in the mud with her Big Bear!
Great fix over all, but I would have replaced the brushes in the starter. If you just stretch the spring it is a very temporary fix and you will be right back where you started.
Talk about breaking a guy's heart… When I saw that 250 R it brought me to tears. 😔😔😔 In my early 20s | purchased a 1986 ATC 250R. Pretty damn close to mint!!! The only thing I did to it was reeds, the old 1989 CR 250 base gasket and head gasket trick, DG pipe and silencer, a twist throttle and new ITP Holeshots all the way around. I'm telling you the thing was cherry. It ran like a Swiss watch. I punch myself in the temple 3 times a day for selling that 250R trike.... literally 3 times a day right to the temple!!! 😂😂😂 Back then how was I supposed to know what the market was going to do? Plus, I wish I still had it just so I could still ride it. Never should've sold it…
I sold mine for 3500 yesterday It was a 98 The 350 big bear is bullet proof Sweet forgiving quad. She plow snow for the whe nayberhood and never complained
The starter armature needed a sanding. And new brushes 4 it won't hurt either. If you have a belt sander. Take off the cutting blades off your mower and sharpen them. And I hope you and your wife buy that 250 acre farm that needs fixing up.
Also a tip with the starter motor when it was apart put the armature in a drill and clean where the brushes contact the armature just spin the drill up and use some sandpaper.
You had a ride on mower also i noticed if quad gets too hot.The brushes could still use replacing as an easy fix.Maybe with new shocks it will run smoother.
Another thing also the black rubber cap on the front hubs pull that off and rotate the adjusters on the the brake pistons. Just adjust until they are binding with the drum.👍👍 you should get a good strong front brake👍
Wow, a big bear. Had one just like it but brown, 1996. Kept breaking tensioner and jumping timing. The wife blew it up 3 times trail riding. 3rd time, I parted it out and made more than it was worth. running. They are electric start. Seems like it always had a bit of a clunk never found it. It's a 350, so I wasn't worried bout it.
that was cool watching you fix the starter. im always watching people build/fix things. started doing the same and making videos recently. im uncertified but i say im a youtube mechanic xD
That soil on your Land is so sandy surprised that guy was able to grow soy beans in that soil. Love your videos just got a Honda 400 ex carb is leaking hope I can fix it watched you fix many carbs.
That thing was just waiting for you to show up Joe.. old Bear there knew you could use an easy week after all the crap you've been dealing with on your dirt bikes.. : )
Theres a concrete guy near you with a popular channel "Victory Outdoor Services" .... maybe a collab hookup that could get yer polebarn slab done economically .... or at least get some insider advice ... you probably already know of him.
Joe, re the starter motor. The brushes are worn out and you need to clean the armature as well because it is really caked in corrosion or possibly burnt oil? Then the brushes will contact properly.
Your videos are like crack cocaine..............starter brush kit $10-15 bucks on ebay, rebuilt using them many times. The most important tool in your toolbox seems to be that damn breaker bar!😁
Pro tip. Put the positive lead on first then use the negative lead to tap the power over. Saves the threads on the starter post from getting heated and mangled up!
No garden update. Assume it got ate. I had a Honda did t hat til it was warm. Was the spark plug. It looked new but was failing when cold. The machine was new,. Plug was bad from the factory.
I had an old van with similar problems and I had to bash the starter with a long pole kept in the cab for such eventualities. I also had a car that had an intermittent starter problems, eventually found to be the armature's wiring missing in one place. Meanwhile I became adept at one leg bump starting by leaving the driver's door open and just get the car moving enough to turn the engine by pushing it with a leg out through the door.
It's something to do with the cylinder to needing new rubber cylinders cap covers on them go bad also. Along with the O-ring seal in those cylinders go bad to.,an yes those brak pad shows are extremely worn down to Joe. I seen them myself also. You're absolutely right about that part. Although those wheel cylinders could be frozen up.,or possibly leaking to. Hopefully not and it's just your brake pad shoes is all.
I had a tan big bear 88 had the same exact issues it was the cdi replaced it went through all the wiring contacts it ran great after that Joe I just started the video but I got a feeling that’s what it’s gonna be 😂
That quad was like “ahh sheit it’s 2vintage time to act right”😂😂😂😂
Love all the videos!! I'm 53, and grew up riding and racing all through the 1980s. Your videos take me back to when we had to fix our own stuff to keep riding. Keep up the great work! 👍
Same here, but I started riding dirt bikes back in the '70s. I bought a used Suzuki TM 400 & always did all the repairs on it myself.
That 3 wheeler is so clean and new looking after its rebuild, this is how your rebuilds should look when your done with them, keep em clean and looking like new!!!
I just purchased a 1999 Grizzly 600. Your videos on the older Yamaha are a clinic on maintenance and repair for my old beast. Much thanks!

I used brushes out of a rc car to fix the starter on one of my bikes. Works perfect. Had to file them to fit but haven’t had a problem yet.
I bought a Honda 185 atc that had a funny bog when I bought it and after I got it home it ran perfect. Never figured out why 😂
Good for you, finding an honest seller, like a needle in a haystack
Love the channel. But remember when you disconnect the battery, take the negative off first.👍

When you guys said it sounds good I swear I hear knocking or is it just me 😮
It's the audio from the camera causes it to sound that way.

Some of them older ones have valve noise and can be a naturally little noisy engine! But could be little knocking
