It is a peaceful life, but it ain't easy. We will defend this way of life with our last drop of blood. The world would be a better place if we all had a back porch to watch the sun set from.

I was brought up on a farm. I stayed out there til I turned 50. The kids were grown and my wife passed. I live in the city now.I miss sittin on the porch listening to the crickets and the breeze rustling the trees. Hmmm.Sounds like a country song.

I’m a lifetime farmer in southern Arkansas. Living on the farm handed down from my grandfather and I’ve been known to do a little front porch pickin too. Still have the guitar my grandfather got me in 1965.

I’ve seen Travis in one of his acoustic concerts about a year ago. Just him and his guitar. He can sing his ass off and his guitar skills are amazing. Definitely one of my favorites and an all time legend. I wish he would come on out and show these new country popsters how it’s done.

Absolutely. Took my dad who’s played rock guitar all his life to a TT solo acoustic show. He loved it. Couldn’t believe the guitar skill and vocal talent. Travis is one of the greats.

It's as if this song was written about me in my early life. Left home for the Army at 17 searching for something better. Wish I was back on that farm right now!

Born and bred in Iowa here. I’ve lived all over the country and THIS song always brings me back home. Most of the family farms are gone now but still lots of family in those small towns surrounded by corn.

You mentioned Charlie Pride, I met him at the Country Music Hall of Fame, back in 2000. Super nice man, I've been a fan of his since I was a young child. He was one of my father's favorite singers.

I have a theory of why country music singers are so good when they perform live. It's because they LOVE singing and consequently, they don't mind putting in the hours and hours and hours, perhaps over a period of many years, of practicing that is necessary to sing well. I heard an EXTREMELY well-known performer in another genre (I would hesitate to call her a "singer') say that she actually didn't enjoy singing but she just did it because that was a way for her to become well known and get rich and anytime you go to see her "live" you actually are treated to her lip-synching.
Country music singers, on the other hand, usually LOVE what they do and on nights when they are not performing somewhere it is not at all uncommon to see them all gather at the house of one of the band members and sing until the wee hours of the morning. When you ENJOY what you are doing and you put that much time into your craft, you become good at it. Also, country music singers HAVE to sing good because that's all most of them do. They don't have smoke and mirrors to entertain the crowd. They don't have a bunch of bimbos dancing behind them wearing as little as the law allows to distract you from the fact that they can't sing. They don't prance all over the stage giving close-ups of body parts that frankly I would prefer not to see. They just SING!
I attended a George Jones concert a couple of decades ago and when he first came on stage he said, "I don't do a lot of dancing around on stage and I don't have a lot of special effects, I just sing." Some dude way at the back of the auditorium said what all of us were thinking. He yelled, "George that's all we want you to do because we came to hear you sing!"
    Anyway, that's my theory!

My dad always told me, when I was younger, between birth and 12 years old is the easiest part of your life because you're not responsible for anything nor. Between 12 and 18 is the hardest part of your life because you're too old to do the things you used to do and not old enough to do the thing you want to do. Penny said between the age of 18 and 25 is the smartest part of your life because you think you know everything. Then between 25 and 35 you realize how stupid you was between 18 and 25 because you'll learn more one time then you will the rest of your life.
Damn why did he have to be right again? Lol

Back in the early 70's in Montana, my Mom went to a Charley Pride concert. She said it was such a hard concert because this, of course was waaaaay before social media. So many people were still so prejudiced against blacks and very open about it. When the concert started and Charley came out and started singing, she said the crowd was in an uproar and a very large portion of them left. They couldn't see beyond the color of his skin. Yet, they loved the music enough to have bought a concert ticket. I know there is racial tension today as well, but I'd like to think that the majority of us have moved beyond those narrow minded times. We're more alike than different, but the differences aren't necessarily bad either. We'd never grow or put forth change if we didn't take time to listen to others opinions and thought processes. We'd never have new cures for diseases, never have invented cars, planes, or walked on the moon. The world is ever changing and we can choose to stay in a stagnant little puddle, or we can move with the tide! ❤

The worst part is he got it from both sides, a guy I worked with told me Charlie did a show for the service members and after singing some of the black guys said "alright, now sing some of our music" for which Charlie replied "I don't sing white music and I don't sing black music, I sing Charlie Pride music" he seemed like a very stand up guy from what I've heard

You should check out Waylon Jennings version of this song. Travis Tritt Originally recorded this song as a tribute to Waylon when Waylon died and it was first performed live at a tribute concert for Waylon Jennings. Wouldn't you know, it became a big hit for Travis (but I still like Waylon's version better).

I appreciate your appreciation of this song. I grew up on a tobacco farm in NC, just south of Greensboro, NC. So glad to hear a Winston-Salem native appreciate this song that says so much about rural farming life, and how some of us rural kids thought there was something else out there. I was one of them. I left the farm and started driving a truck. Wish I'd never left the farm. And yes, I grew up listening to Charlie Pride; he had an amazing voice. God bless you, friend.

Plus my job and going to night school.

One of the most extraordinary live performers there's ever been. Would love to see you react to Travis Tritt doing "Long Haired Country Boy" from the same live show as in this video. Ol' Charlie Daniels must've been proud of that performance. Interesting how in the 70s video of Charlie Daniels doing his original performance was also him sitting down, just like Travis during his live show. I wonder if that was intentional to pay tribute to ol' man legend Daniels or not. But damn Travis Tritt can play and sing link a champ!

    Beautiful melody with the truth…
Do city folk “feel” this song, too?
In response to Mr. Morin’s comment:
In Texas Mr. Pride was doing a concert with a short-haired Willie Nelson and others, and Mr. Pride was the only one to receive a standing ovation that night. I pray Mr. pride is truly as amazing as he seems to be. Prayers to his family for his leaving this world. The Heavenly Choir must be glad to have him, though!
