This movie is simply beautiful. I love EVERYTHING about it. Very mininalistic flick. Beautifully minimalistic. One of best Kitano's films as gar as I am concerned
I have a soft spot for this film and the Joe Hisaishi score is absolutely top drawer (my favourite score of his and coincidentally my fav Kitano film is Kikujiro) This film was also a real change of pace from Kitano’s earlier more darker and violent films up to this point in his directing career and to be honest; I find myself returning more to his ‘lighter’ films personally. I can understand the criticism of this film but, I’ve always had a particular fondness for films where the main characters are mute or where dialogue is kept to a minimum; Mr Long, Miss Zombie and 3-Iron are some that come to mind. Regarding Claude Maki, the only other film I can recall seeing him in is another Kitano film; Brother from 2000. I can still remember the first time I saw this film and immediately after watching I checked to see what else Hiroko Ôshima had been in and was kinda surprised and disappointed to find that this was her only ever acting role as she was so impressive here.
This film is relaxing and I find it calming. There isn't much dialogue and it really feels like watching it in the rain. Becoming one of my favorite films from "Takeshi Kitano". I hope to find other films similar to this. . . .
I fell in love with Hiroko Oshima in this film, and then was crushed when I looked her up after I finished watching the movie and found out she never acted again. Loved this movie, easily in my top 3 from Kitano - I still have a few I haven't seen from him, but only 1 of them seems to be highly acclaimed so I doubt this has a chance of falling out of that top 3 spot.

I think I ranked this in my Top 3 for Kitano.
@@Asian_Movie_Enthusiast which two are 1 and 2?
Kids Return and Kikujiro
@@Asian_Movie_Enthusiast didn't see Kid's return. My top two are this one and Sonatine.

Good references to those other "low dialogue" movies. Some unique stuff in there for sure. I love some of those as well.

Definitely a soothing movie.

Been on my watch list for 20 years. Sigh.
It's definitely worth watching. Maybe someday it will be easy to find streaming.
