This film truly showed the scope and ability of kitano's skill as a film maker. More spiritual and quiet than his other gangster movies. Good review btw 👍
I actually haven’t seen this one, though I love the director’s stuff. This was the first film Takeshi Kitano did where he didn’t take the lead role, and KIDS RETURN is the other gentle movie he did from this period with a similar feel. But at some point you’ve got to jump in to his big ones, which are VIOLENT COP, SONATINE, HANA-BI (aka FIREWORKS), BROTHER and OUTRAGE - and do the early ones first. They stick with you, and are really something. Same meditative style, great Joe Hisaishi scores, often very funny, but very tough and impactful and moving. And if you only ever watch one, watch HANA-BI. That’s the film Kitano - a huge national celebrity in Japan - made after a motorcycle crash that nearly killed him, and the whole film is about reflection, picking different paths, inner conflict and the wonder of life. Plus it’s a devastating, haunting crime film. That film kind of took things to a new level for Kitano, made him an international celebrity, swept award festivals worldwide, and I still think about it often. But I liked your review here a lot and it’s great to see you branching out to new stuff.
Thank you for your review, I will definitely check out this movie. I have a very good suggestion for you, "Malena" it's an Italian movie. It is a very good movie and I think your viewers will enjoy it. Take care.
Thanks for your commentary on Takeshi Kitano's film "A Scene at the Sea." I have been a fan of Takeshi Kitano-sans works for many years. I imported a few Blu-Rays of his films that I could not find here in the states to add to my collection. After watching his less popular film ACATS I was curious to see if anyone else enjoyed this work. I must admit when watching ASATC I was slightly bored but the unexpected ending was quite moving and emotional (in a good way). On reflection I would personally rank ASATC in my top 5 of Kitano-san films. If you found ASATC of interest I would also recommend "Dolls (2002)" and "Kikujiro (1999)" as they are also departures from his frequent crime films (Joe Hisaishi-san also did the music for these two films - his scoring of "Summer" for Kikujiro film is a classic and you may recognize the piece). Cheers!
A Scene at the Sea was a great drama movie, but my personal favorite of japanese/asian drama is KIDS RETURN 1996 and you should watch it a High Recommendation from me 👍🏻 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Whhhooooooaw! My vibe about you and subbing was spot on... You ARE going deep on some excellent cinema. You're going for the ART and not feeling the need to give us an hour long essay on them. Great to get newbies into this stuff. This, A Scene at The Sea, makes me think you would LOVE The Taste of Tea. seek it out. i only wish i could sit and watch it with you to see you respond. www.imdb.com/title/tt0413893/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 . If i may offer a word on your production... Think about raising your camera a bit. You're above us and we can see up yer nose. heh heh heh. The camera should be at eye level, straight ahead and psychologically we are all at the same level and more at ease.
This film really is a hidden gem.
