DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Competitive players started running small critter teams because of their smaller upkeep costs and Dinosaur users transitioned into maining small feathered birds instead.

I'm thinking this episode needs a remake. I haven't fully looked into how it happened, but Rhyperior got into OU in Gen 8. It'd definitely be good to see Kellen chat about.
Also Rhydon has a a lot of usage with an eviolite...
Yeah this Pokemon has a good run in Gen 8, ever since they got rid of Hidden power which benefits special attackers and of course cutting some of the Pokemon from the game. It really helped it to the point it had high usage. Plus we cannot ignore what it did in early Sword and Shield VGC
And Rhydon with eviolite was way better than Rhyperior in gen 5 VGC, it had way more placements in 2013
I'm not sure about how it ran in singles, but at least in doubles Rhypherior was way stronger in Gen 8 because of the combination of weakness policy and dynamax. It was one of the best weakness policy users, and terrifying when you got it off under trick room even with a bulky water since so many bulky waters could be OHKOed by a dynamax move even after one intimidate.
Just wait till gen 8 Rhyperior, you'll finally shine.
He need some buffs though.

Redpika it was a joke
I heard that Rhydon was pretty vulnerable to Fire types as well. Because of its low SP. defense, many Fire types can finish it off with Fire Blast or Flamethrower.
This video desperately needs a remake. Rhydon still had a niche after Rhyperior, not going into detail on Rhyperior and Rhydon's UU and other tier runs, and Gen 8.
Didn't Rhydon see a lot of use when Eviolite was introduced? I know I've seen articles covering it.
This video needs a update, because in Gen 8 VGC first series, Rhyperior was one of the Trick Room Kings with Dynamax. Really hated to play vs it.
Great Video as always!!!
What about eveolite rhydon? Its bulkier that rhyperior and its busted in sand
That's true but unfortunately Rhydon is vulnerable to getting hit with Knock off and limit its use with Eviolite only. Rhyperior can utilize more items and be more offense heavy which Rhydon can't do anymore
@@Smart1529 Yeah but talking about him would be nice
@@thecriticalghost4626 that is true, it's just a matter of which play style you prefer, offense or defense. Rock Fighting or ground Fighting both could be pretty decent if you want to keep the duel type
Or pure rock/ground would do better then their combination. Out of the 2 I'd maybe go Rock so the electric immunity lightning rod gives you isn't entirely useless.
Lightning rod is still great for redirection

How good was Kabutops?
How good was Heracross?
Could you do the Porygons ?
Yay! More support for the Porygon line!
You know, I just had a random thought - an easy way to tell fans of the games from fans of the anime is to ask about Porygon. If they don't play the games, then they'll be unable to answer, but they'll probably know about Porygon if they play, especially if they're into competitive Pokémon; after all, Porygon2 is a monster.
but Porygon2/Porygon-Z are very different and occupy different roles; 2 is a bulky attacker and Z is a setup sweeper. in gen 5/6, they were even in the same tier. So, like scyther and scizor, he can't do both at once.
Fair enough. I still can't work out how to use Porygon-Z, to be honest. I mean, it could just be its design and how it looks like something Bethesda would program - fun but *really* buggy - but I always preferred Porygon2; it just looks, well, sleeker. Anyway, yeah, they're very different mons.
El Barno
Until Gen 7:
Scarfed/Specs/Life Orb
Gen 7: the mentioned above + Z-Conversion
PorygonZ is powerful, so you need to know how to use that on your advantage
Oh, thanks. Wasn't expecting that. I tried a few Scarf sets, but I couldn't figure out a good use for them at the time. I might try one later.
And now for something completely different.
I came up with a weird Aggron set a few months ago. Haven't tried it out yet, so I don't know how good it is - and it is rather experimental, so don't expect it to be amazing - but if anyone wants to use it, then go for it.

Just increase Solid Rock from 1/4 to 1/2 damage taken from super effective moves and you have a good Pokémon being only weak to x2 water and x2 grass type moves.
Good, this could be given to every rock/ground
So only 2 weaknesses basically cool
I would say thats too op, so 1/3 reduced from super effective
@@Squirtle_Squad_Supremacy I wouldn’t say OP, because Water is a common type and its Speed and Sp. Defense is horrendous. Its good things are its great HP, Attack, Defense and two STAB typings that hit everything for at least neutral damage.

Inklink it's okay. Of the line, I personally like Rhyhorn's the best. It's cool and rocky without overdoing it...like all the rocks on Rhyperior xD
I can imagine how many people are making rhydon deez nutz jokes lol
You know, when I knew that Rhydon got 50 points added to it's Base Stat when it evolved, but it evenly distributed to every stat except Speed, I felt cheated...
They should have just put all of that into Special Defense instead... and maybe even lowered it's Special Attack and put those points into Special Defense as well...
Maybe then, it'd be more viable... and you could still have boosted it's Attack and HP by 10 points...
I feel like Rhyperior wasn't given the boost it deserved...
I agree, Rhyperior deserve better stats (especially Special Defence)
He can sacrifice Special Attack for that.

Can we discuss about the slowpoke family next?
Not covering LC.
viorel weber slowpoke FAMILY
viorel weber I think they mean Slowbro and Slowking, as it says slowpoke family not slowpoke itself.
Slowbro is basically the asshole of bulky waters thanks to amazing coverage, bulk and the move Slack-Off. Whereas Slacking has almost always been a set-up mon in some regard either skill swapping onto slacking in gen III or setting trick room currently. Basically these guys are rough is what I'm saying.
Maybe Crobat next?
I'm voting for Nidoqueen or Heracross!
Keep up the informative content, man. Really saves people from reading up on Smogon for hours on end.

can you please do slowbro? you could even do slowking in the same vid if you want
Gimme a P!
Gimme an O!
Gimme a Porygon video already!
how would his evolutions be handled?
Likely the same way Chansey and Blissey were handled, only discussing the most used evolution.
problem is Porygon 2 and Porygon Z are completely different beasts who are both rather viable in their own right. It's more a Scyther Scizor thing.
The thing is, since Porygon-Z would only take up three generations of the video, it probably wouldn't make a very long vid on its own...
BUT, if you were to pair it with Porygon, it would be weird because original Porygon is most similar to Porygon2, so those two should be together.
So I vote for a whole Porygon mega video that encompasses all three.
It's true, Porygon 2 is one of those eviolite users everyone really seems to like. Porygon Z ran trick room set-up didn't he?

Rhydon with Eviolite is a solid pick in ORAS. It's physical defense stat is boosted significantly, tanking many physical attacks with easy, while striking back with STAB Earthquake or Stone Edge for crazy damage, or simply set up Stealth Rocks. Also, in Doubles, it redirects electric attacks to itself with Lightning Rod ability.

Yeah, pull an Aggron and change its type to something without the x4 weakness and and maybe keep Solid Rock and huge buffs to attack and defense. maybe even nerf its speed upon Mega Evolving so more points to other stats and so that its Trick Room usage becomes even better. It's not like its outspeeding anything as is so you might as well.

Hey my man. I'm a huge fan of your channel, been subbed since your 3rd analysis, and have always loved the videos. This time, however, it felt a little rushed. I noticed a few mistakes here and there, and while those things were nothing major, it still made the video seem unpolished.
