Thank you. To me, as a continental European, you represent the true character of the America I got to know when I lived over there for two years. Encouraging, forward looking, lovingly supportive and trusting in one's own uniqueness.
@@AF-xf5sy Agreed. There are still lots of good ones here! But darkness lies in the hearts of many. Winter is coming. (Ok, now I'm just being dramatic.)
I appreciate this. I just spoke to my wife about getting the recording equipment I've talked about for years. This was after I snuck her away from the kiddos long enough to hear another song I wrote today! It feels right to bring something into existence. But most of all, this is a reminder to just set up the phone and put another song on youtube. Don't wait on equipment. Work on your craft. Write. Create. Fight the resistance! Thanks man.
@Guitargate Hi Michael. Thank you. May I also suggest 'Art and Fear' by DavidBayles/Ted Orland as an, at least, equally inspiring read on the subject to all.
Last time I had said this, what I'm about to say right now, was when I had discovered Michael Jackson and his "Thriller" as a kid, for the first time ever! Today however I'm saying it to you: Love you, Michael! ♡ ^_^
Holy shit this hit hard right now. I’m currently laying on our guest bed where I’ve slept for the past week cuz my wife and I are working through things and I’m a few scotches deep. I’ve had a dream of having a woodworking shop for years. The pieces have slowly, very slowly, been falling into place. A few months ago I realized that no one else is gonna do the things for me. So I installed wood paneling, I hung shop lights, I scheduled the electrician, I installed the mini split. But it’s taken a backseat recently as I’ve tried to get my mind straight. Thanks for the video.
@Zeppelinfool as a fellow guitarist turned furniture builder, please allow me to tell a short story. 12 years ago I stopped touring and started building furniture. Really as a hobby. I had a dream of building interesting furniture pieces for the people who could afford upscale projects. I was told it was a bad idea and not to try. “Get a job installing cabinets, it’s good money”. Even loved ones had no faith. Today I am doing exactly what my “dream” was. You have to believe in yourself, work hard, be willing to learn from mistakes and be persistent. You’ve got it my friend. All you have to do is just do it!
I found you during covid and you revived for me a childlike love for music that I hadn't felt in a long time. And you've continued to foster that since then. Thank you for always pushing and inspiring Michael. Although it's not my career plan, and I'm in school for other things, I'm working full-time at a church as a worship leader. Playing music is a huge part of my life now and has been the ground for me to build so many friendships and mentoring relationships through the music. I didn't think I'd be where I am now if you'd asked me 5 years ago, and I couldn't be more grateful to do what I get to do right now. Thank you Michael
"When she was growing up in rural Virginia she would be out working in the fields and she said she would feel and hear a poem coming at her from over the landscape and she said it was like a thunderous train of air and it would come barrelling down at her over the landscape. And she said that when she felt it coming - because it would shake the earth under her feet - she knew that she had only one thing to do at that point and that was to, in her words, ‘run like hell’ and she would run like hell to the house, being chased by this poem. And the whole deal was that she had to get to a piece of paper and pencil fast enough so when it thundered through her she could collect it and grab it on the page." from Elizabeth Gilbert's TED talk on creativity, genius, and showing up to get the work done - I can't recommend it highly enough! On this same topic. You tapped into this same spirit, Michael! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you my dear friend.......this needed to be said. No-one needs to wait till the road behind is much longer than the road ahead.......the only viable excuse is always that life got in the way : but it truly doesn't have to.....ever!!! Thanks again good brother Palmesano , your wise beyond your yrs. Cheers , ron
I appreciate you, brotha. Thank you for the wisdom and inspiration. There is so much truth in this. I've lived on the other side and was constantly self-sabotaging. I'm 6 months sober and feeling renewed, and I can't wait to see what God has been doing while waiting for me.
Great video. Cover band guy. Spent my whole life playing other peoples songs. Finally writing a few of my own. I feel like I got a win with one the other day, hoping for more to come. Thanks for this video and the reminder.
Mr Michael Palmisano, I need you to know that a friend sent one of your videos several years ago because he knew I loved the artist (Sierra Ferrell, btw), I’ve never so much as played a single musical note on a guitar or any other instrument, but I’ve been religiously watching you since that day…. And like so so so many of us I needed this video! I needed your encouragement! I needed to hear of this book! Thank you & Namaste
Steven Pressfield's books made me fall in love with history all over again; I haven't read his non-fiction, but his novels set in ancient Greece and World War II are incredible. Thanks for mentioning him, and thanks for the reminder!
I just played Salmonfest up here in Alaska. Solo guitar w looping pedal. (Chris Needham) Its the biggest music festival in Alaska and I give you thanks brother for your lessons and music enthusiasm for helping me and increasing my confidence to push through the anxiety and try to dream big and follow through with the actions that will help achieve those dreams. I'm sure I'm not the only one that appreciates you. Thanks again Michael, have a good day.
Perfect video at thee most perfect time in my life.Im building a guitar right as I was watching this trying to fit the neck to the body. Needed to hear this.Great video, thanx!!!
Thank you very much for making this video. You described the exact person I am right now. Depressed, abusing drugs and alcohol because I haven’t yet figured out how to effectively fight the resistance. I’m so angry with myself for not living up to my full potential, and I just don’t get why I haven’t been able to push through. Just the fact that others experience the exact same thing and can overcome it gives me hope for the future. I definitely plan on reading The War of Art. Thank you for the suggestion, and thank you for being you, Michael. Your channel is special because while you’re an amazing musician and teacher, your sense of caring for fellow humans and general benevolence really shows through everything you do.
I always feel art or music in me, even when I didn't play any instrument or sing. Nowadays that I can sing and play instruments, learning on my own, that feeling, that you explain in the video and that I felt my whole life, it's in me almost everyday and in different specific situations. This video just show how music and art is in all of us, and is a way of self expression that we should share with others, something I have to learn and practice cos that's something I don't do, even thought I dont want to be famous or win a lot money with music. So, thank you very much for the video and the book recommendation, in some way you share with us your art and be sure you're helping a lot of people.
Love this, The War of Art is a favorite of mine!! For the past 10 years I've been in video production full time, and I've been a musician since I was a teenager. The idea of the muse and how it ebbs and flows has always fascinated me. I think of it as "at bats". If you are writing songs, it could take writing for 25 hours before the muse hits you. So if you only sit down once a month for an hour to write, it's going to take a long time for the muse to hit. The more 'at bats' you take, the closer you'll get to what you want. As the saying goes "Preparation + Opportunity = Luck". Make sure your skills are sharp for when the muse hits, or there's an agent interested etc.
I applaud you Michael for having the courage to get in front of the camera and talking about it - and even more in such an inspirational way. As the comments show, a lot of people can identify with it, me included and I will definitely check out the book. I just got myself "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius and "Soul Boom" by Rainn Wilson, when I'm through with those books, "The War of Art" will be the next one on my list. I wish you all the best, I love your channel, keep doing what you'r doing!
I'm watching this from Berlin, Germany, where I have been feeling beat down in the field of being creative in what I had done since i was 12 and i feel i will get back to it but i didnt know how for years now. Those are the thoughts exactly that i wished to hear from someone else. Thankyou
I've had this audio book in my que for a long time because you recommended it a while back in an email. After seeing your video last night, I finally started it while on a road trip today. I know it's going to be one of those works of wisdom that I'll read/listen/refer to for many years to come. Thanks for recommending it. One of my favorite quotes so far is: "The best and only thing that one artist can do for another is to serve as an example and an inspiration." You, Michael, my brother, have definitely and continue to succeed with doing this. Thought about you when I heard that. I look forward to continuing to listen and gleaning more wisdom from this book.
Thanks for the words of encouragement,Mr.Palmisano! I’ve learned meditation helps keep me centered and I only started it this year. I used to live in the past. No more. I learned to let go!
Thank you, i just snagged me a copy. Ive struggled with the fight within oneself over.expressing feelings through art/music and the shame and doubt that works against one's mission to conjur or document their journey through a medium such as sound. Depression is opportunistic and the clouds will roll in if things pivot away from you- because thats what it should be all about: yourself and your journey. Likewise, pride will bath over you if you take it and run with it. Love ya man, Long time viewer of yours
Excellent timing! It all happens for a reason, if you stick it out the pieces eventually fall into place. Thanks for the video and book recommendation, it's been a tough couple of years for us all, time to get back on the train!! Cheers!
thanks man. I needed to hear this. I've been stuck a long time doing a job I don't like. I know I want to use my creativity to do something I love. I'll check out the book.
Thank you Michael! I needed to hear this and just grabbed the audiobook to listen on my travels. I’ve been dealing with this with a lot of the things I want to do and have found a lot of success but have often plateaued at some point and wasted away the time that I could use to get better (guitar included). I need to get to that “pro” mindset to push through those plateaus. The timing on your video is perfect as for me that self sabotage has been at a recent all time high and I need to push past it. This is greatly appreciated 🙏
Rick Rubins book "The Creative ACT: A Way of Being" also does a great job explaining this. I'm not a musically inclined person however I felt the book was written in a way that I could easily relate to. Highly recommend.
Thanks man. I needed this pep talk. I finished my first novel earlier this year and it did absolutely nothing. I know now that I can write a full length narrative, however, so it's time to get up and start again. Thanks again :) you rock
Man you are one my biggest influences as a musician, largely because of the fact that you choose to post a video like this. Couldn’t have come at a better time as I have a huge gig to play tomorrow night. Thank you !
Love this. It's amazing what a shift of the mind can do. getting right with the creative flow of the universe is absolutely crucial to Chanel its offerings as you so eloquently pointed out. I would also recommend "The Artist''s Way" for a life changing way of living
I like this and appreciate it coming from a good stand up guy like you brother ! …. I am 58 and in the midst of restoring my 74 nova that i assumed would be done 2 years ago !!… im also allowing myself to pick up my acoustic guitar a little more that i used to play daily in my 20 s and 30 s
Thanks Michael, I am in my final push to complete my website. I have received my patent. A system that helps people learn and play guitar. I have always had positive feedback over the last couple of years. Some of your lessons, helped me get to where I’m at. Your book recommendation is perfect. I’m taking a risk with time and money. A lot of pressure to make my system generate revenue. I have been “out on a limb” for about 3 years and it’s not easy. Hearing your YT this am helped a lot! That I wasn’t crazy in pursuing my idea/invention. If people would have laughed at my product, I would have stopped along time ago. I do have that feeling, where I cant stop till I’ve shown it to other music nerds as myself. Thanks Michael, it means the world to me!
I am a serial procrastinator. I have a million excuses as to why I cannot do the things I want to do. You and this book is absolutely right. The people creating and doing DO NOT CARE what people think or their gear or equipment. They just DO.
This resonated with me BIG TIME! I trust your recommendation, so I just bought it. There's nothing wrong with having scaffolding up, but only if you're using it to fix or build something. Thanks Mike! 🤘😑🤘
Thanks for that Michael. I actually bought this book a long time ago on Hans Zimmer's recommendation on a Pro Film Composer Forum and never read it! Talk about resistance!! I'll read it.

Damn man…. I literally just had this conversation about creating with someone. When the messages come, they hit you like a baseball bat. I’m going to get this book. Right video, right time, right message. Thanks
Great video, Michael. This book came up a bunch among coworkers in the copywriting world. My problem (or blessing, I’m not sure) is that I have an interest in so many things. I’d love to “do the work,” but get overwhelmed by juggling so many hobbies/interests and not getting really good at just a few. Aviation is one thing I want to be the best at doing
Thank you. To me, as a continental European, you represent the true character of the America I got to know when I lived over there for two years. Encouraging, forward looking, lovingly supportive and trusting in one's own uniqueness.

Great book!
Amazing.
Couldn't agree more. An all-time book. John Mayer and Joe Rogan both say it's one of the most important books they found early on.
Another great video.
