  • The Smith & Wesson M&P10 is one of the lightest semi-automatic .308 rifles on the market. However, it is not free-floated and the factory handguards leave much to be desired for precision shooting. We set out to see if the M&P10 can be free-floated and modernized without compromising how light it is.

    That weight is pretty impressive. My PWS MK216(piston) comes in at 8.5lbs. Personally im more than happy to take that extra weight for the benefits as i run suppressed 98% of the time. Still would like to try one of these out some day. Absolutely love the PWS though.

    I appreciate your information. I plan on buying a M&P optics ready carbine shortly. I prefer the 16" barrel . Previous rifles with the same length barrel have preformed well for me at 600 meters. It won't be long before I will want to attach a bipod so a free float will be necessary. Thanks.

    Interesting. I made the exact same mods (brands and models) to my M&P 10's break, forgrip and charging handle. However, I went with the Gen 3 PRS and an off brand ergo grip (which I love). And I added a harris style (off brand) bipod. The rifle is heavy but, I don't mind. I use it for hunting in the winter and long range, precision target shooting in the off season. People think I'm an idiot for setting up a semi (instead of a bolt action) for precision shooting. That is until they hear me consistently clanging steel a half mile down range. :-) Thanks for the vid.

    I looked into the ODIN works. There is some negative commentary I am concerned on with the installation. Some of the comments I have read include wording that has "The barrel nut (gas tube) aligning tool gets pinched in the gas tube hole in the upper. Removing it means you have to unloosen the nut your trying to tighten", the set screws strip and the handguards is not tight enough. I wanted to see if that was just a quark, or if Odin Works is solid. I am also considering diamonhead from its reviews. Thanks! Great video

    Great video!! Thx!! I love my M&P10. Rather than modifying my upper, I'd like to buy a complete and fully assembled free float upper. I heard it is difficult to find a complete upper for the M&P10, as all other brands just won't fit correctly. Additionally I heard S&W won't sell an upper for this rifle. Any suggestions? Very much appreciated!!

    • @TacticalAccountants
      @TacticalAccountants  5 років тому +1

      Unfortunately what you said is accurate. If you want the 308 M&P10 specifically, you would need to free float it yourself. The M&P10 Performance Center in 6.5 Creedmoor is free floated from the factory.

    • @TacticalAccountants

      Easiest way is to remove the rail if you won't be doing it often. Otherwise Wojtek Weaponry offers a long allen key just for this reason and also has newer gas block with more tactile adjustments.

    The M&P 10 Sport is now available. Any thoughts on the new Sport 16 inch barrel version in comparison to the original in the 18 inch barrel?

    • @TacticalAccountants
      @TacticalAccountants  5 років тому +2

      I'm intrigued by the Sport because MSRP is like $400 less than the 18 inch. Hard to believe that is all due to the barrel and nothing else. You can pick up a Faxon AR10 barrel for much less than that and I doubt the 18 inch S&W barrel s any better than that. With that said, I have not tried the 16 inch but would not mind one for street price of $799 or so. If it is as reliable as my 18 has been, the ambi features alone make a strong argument for that price.

    • @mrgauges9065
      @mrgauges9065 5 років тому

      I’ve had the Sport 16” for a few weeks, only have 120 rounds through it so far. The 16” barrel is, or appears much hardier than the 18”. I could only get it out to 100 yards from my backstop, but couldn’t ask for more on accuracy. Federal soft tip 150 and 180 grain cycled smooth. But had issues with Federal 168 GM match not cycling, weak ejection. When I got home, the gas block was not fully tight. It’s a heavy hitter so must have come loose, loosing pressure. Scope rings kept coming loose too. Bring along some tools. I have high hopes now that everything’s tightened up

    • @TacticalAccountants

      srfbig I have the wheeler upper vice block. It doesn’t fit perfectly on the bigger receiver but it’s close enough to work. It’s been a while so I don’t recall exactly what compound I used but there was definitely something recommended by Odin when installing their handguard nut. I’m sure it’s in their instructions. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

      The worst part of the entire thing, for me, was removing the roll pin from the factory gas block to get the gas tube out. Apparently a special tapered punch makes this a lot easier. Other than that, you will need barrel nut wrench, torque wrench, upper or barrel vise, and in the case of this particular handguard, a crowfoot wrench it did not come with but that I got on amazon for like $12.

    • @dukebeach1
      @dukebeach1 6 років тому

      Thanks for the tips, especially the tapered punch. You wouldn't happened to know the diameter off the top of your head?? I've got plenty of punches, but don't even know what a tapered one is for (well, I do now).
      I think I've got everything else, or at least access to everything else via a friend who has done some AR pattern builds.
      Thanks again for responding. Appreciate the info and insight.

  • @RanchoFiascoMike

    Decided to go ahead and run with the free float idea. What a headache! Went with the Odin Works tunable gas block as the adjustable gas block will not clear the Aero Precision Atlas M5 R1 handguard. The gas block will not fit on the barrel. Can’t manage to punch the roll pin out of the factory gas block either. Smith said they push that pin into place with a 20 ton press. The complications go on and on. If you booger up the factory gas tube Smith will NOT sell you another replacement.

Any specific recommendations on this tool and where to purchase it? . If you had it to do all over, how would you approach the gas block removal? Would you just have it drilled out again and not even attempt its removal on you own? This is the best video I have found on the topic. Please keep uploading.

      TA-Just as an afterthought, wouldn't sinking an extra 10 bucks into a new gas tube be the easiest fix? You wouldn't have to worry about deforming the factory tube with all the heavy hammer work and you could just trash the entire factory block/tube assembly.

      Robert Entrekin I did, actually. Gas block itself easier than expected. Flash hider easier than expected. Barrel nut easier than expected. But gas tube roll pin was a PITA. I broke a punch trying. Roll pin punches are a good investment apparently. Local gun shop drilled it out for free, gas tube was fine.
      All in I spent $1330 as you see it. Got the rifle for $999 and the rail for $130 from primary arms on Black Friday.

      Thank you for the reply. I'v been thinking about free floating my MP10 but not sure if it is of any benefit sense I don't shoot that much. If Nut-n-fancy can hit 707 yd's without free float I'm not sure I need to.

    • @TacticalAccountants
      @TacticalAccountants  6 років тому +2

      Robert Entrekin That is a fair point. The problem with factory handguard as I see it is if you do mount a bipod to it and brace the legs hard against shooting mat loops, as I shoot when I'm going for precision, that is a lot of force acting on the barrel. I don't want that as a variable. But I'm 100% with you on nutnfancy's results piquing my interest on this rifle.
