Best AR10 Option: S&W M&P10 OR 308 Review

- I am often asked to recommend which firearm of a certain category I would suggest and much of my answer depends on the intended use. When it come to semi-automatic large caliber rifles (traditionally chambered in 308 Winchester), I recommend Smith & Wesson M&P 10 Sport Optics Ready. The S&W M&P AR 10 is accurate, reliable, light weight, and low cost.

I never thought I would like a AR10 for accuracy when I have been shooting bolt rifles with my handloads for decades and use to sub 0.5 MOA groups. But I decided to try the S&W performance center AR10 in 6.5 CM that will shoot .75 - 1.0 MOA all day with factory Hornady match ammo. It came with a 2-stage precision match trigger and threaded muzzle, I added a muzzle brake and changed the stock to a Magpul PRS GEN3. I have stretched it out to 1200 meters with no issues.
This is a great rifle. Thanks for the video. I bought one of these in 2016. Got the 18” model. Started with the Magpul handguard for a few years and finally free floated it with an Aero Precision handguard. It’s pretty consistent with 1 MOA grouping. Have a LaRue trigger in it. A great choice for the money. Put Burris glass on it. 4 to 20x
The folks at S&W use a lot of proprietary designs in this so they are not like an AR15. Pic rail height is different than a DPMS design. Buffer tube is a little different etc. This rifle was $1,300 when I bought it. Have been very happy with the way it shoots. I use almost all hand loads. 168 gr SMKs. Found using ball ammo my groups went to about 3 to 4 MOA. It is a very capable rifle and shoots as good as rifles that are $1,000 more in cost.
Sent mine back due gas port missligned. Turned it around in a week. No stove pipes or misfeeds since. Accurate as can be, have a primary arms 5x prism with Magpul guard
I'm glad you had a good experience with your M&P-10. I had the Magpul version and it was a DOG! It was very inaccurate and the had ejection issues. It went back to S&W twice and the didn't fix it so it got to be someone else's problem.
Hate to here that your experience was like that with the S&W M&P 10. Glad you shared it in the comments so others have it as a data point.
My weapon of choice right there
Hell yeah, glad to see a good review video on this rifle. I purchased it and happy with my buy. I just need to buy a good optic. I was given a leapers scope for free as a gift for the rifle. Can't wait to shoot it
Are you on any other social platforms, would like to see more on the M&P10 to get some more ideas on this rifle. This goes for anyone else who owns the M&P 10 with 16"BARREL..
Maybe I’ll put out a second video on it
I just knew M&P would do this, considering the excitement following the Ruger SFAR. This is the first I am hearing about it. *Edit I see this came out long before the new Ruger 7.62* Maybe their platforms aren't so identical.
I have to stick with my Saint Victor 308 Light as h*** And takes all ammo no jams No problems yet cross my fingers Keep up the good work just wanted to throw my pain in there I think Hands down I have a sig
Smith and Wesson The ruger But at the end of the day The Saint Victor chambered in 308 Put them all to shame Keep up the good work thank you
I’m thinking of picking one up with the $100 rebate right now
I have the original 18 inch version. I am looking to free float the barrel. Other than that I really think it is a fantastic shooting rifle.
Got a 12.5 heavy barrel pinned. For 700$ not including red dot and flip ups. It works for bearing hunting. I shot it once in the blind with no ears on. I am a lefty so I like the ambi magazine releases. I found buying 2 safeties works for my south paw. So can get 2 stubby selectors and set the one on right side 180* out. I don't like the ergo grips. Rather have extra trigger finger reach for bolt catch and mag release.
I own the 18” version.
If you hand load…..
I got incredible accuracy (a penny covers the 5 shot group) with 130gr Barnes TTSX with Varget. Avg 2850fps.
Will be great on deer.
If you supress this rifle
You will likely need an adjustable gas block.
Thank you for making this video. Very enjoyable. Well done Sir.
Thanks much Milo. I also had the 18" version years ago and had the same experience. Smith & Wesson makes a great AR10 rifle.
Did I happen to miss you talking about that Leupold scope setup specs you have? I do have this S&W variant? I definitely need a scope on it
PSA PA10 for $570 for freedom week! Just shot mine and its awesome 👌
i Have the same rifle. You didn’t mention one of my favorite things about the rifle and that’s the two little anti woble Gaskets in between the upper and lower it’s a low cost feature that i think every ar should Have.
Do you remember the grain of bullet you were using to get your tighter groups? Nice upgrades and paint job!
165-175
Quick question. I’ve heard standard ar triggers work in the ar-10 is that true? Does the spring have enough force to strike the primer like it should.
Thank you for the awesome review. I'm looking to get one of these for hunting as well. The red dot at 45° is interesting, I really like it. I've never seen that (I'm new though, sorry). Your posture is way more upright for a quick pull. Also, the take can job looks really nice. What kind of environment are you looking to match? Is this still reliable after a yr +?
Thanks. I find the brown and tan pattern blends in with most environments, but my home environment is mainly woodland. Yes, I’ve taken 4 bucks with this gun over two deer seasons and have put a few hundred rounds through it total, it’s been 100% reliable with the the only exception being when I put a suppressor on it. For suppressed operations, it will likely need some modifications to perform 100%. Take care
I freakin love this gun.
Another great option is psa ar 10, with the gieselle trigger that comes with it, it shoot very impressive groups even with the cheap steel case ammo
Thanks for stopping by, I’ll have to check it out.
It's the picatinny rail on the front to mount a iron sight that makes it the optics ready model.
Thanks
Only bad thing is that Smith and Wesson AR10 has proprietary BCG which isn’t something you want in a SHTF scenario cause you’ll be SOL if that proprietary BCG goes out.
Good to know. Do you know if that’s for the VOLUNTEER X 308, the M&P 10 SPORT, or both?
I'll keep that in mind, I totally want to gut it out, got it cause it's ambidextrous
You’ll have to contact your manufacturer for specifics and know that rifles that have proprietary systems aren’t something I’d personally use for a shtf system no matter low cost they are cause in the long run you will NOT find replacement parts or be able to interchange parts especially since the left has added hidden bill’s attempting to stop online gun, parts and ammo. As a non proprietary 308 caliber I’d look at Aero M5’s and customize as you wish which parts are currently abundant. Good luck and God Bless….
Sweet! Thanks for the knowledge!
There is a solution to that problem get a spare complete bolt and carrier. I make it a priority to have spare parts for all ar. A specially AR10s if it is going to be a shtf gun.
Any issues installing the trigger due to the ambi controls?
An interesting point with your video is "how" your other one got stolen. For your viewers the ins and outs of protection in retention. Please share.
Hello,
Very good video, I have a question to ask you, in terms of ar15 the s&w are bad side, twist 1/9 etc.
But ar10 is what it is reliable robust and accurate, there are diamonback DB10 in 13 inch, fn10, Daniel defense the reference and many other brands?
Apart from the big brands because the prices are more expensive, the diamonback DB10 is also good for the interesting price?
Think you very much.
Best regards.
I haven’t had a chance to check out the DB10 yet, but maybe someone on the channel has. Thanks for the support Robert.
Can you get extra bolts for this rifle?
What scope is that?
I have the same weapon and it came with ammo. The ammo given worked really well but no box to identify what manufacturer. So I started using various ammo and it jammed every time. Can you tell me whats been working for you?
.
Federal gold match 175 grain and Sig Sauer elite series 165 grain
What ammo did you use? I used off the shelve 180 grain green box, not so great. Winchester 180 grain whitetail was about 2 in at 100 yards.
I don’t reload, so looking for great ammo that I can just buy
Federal gold metal match 175gr and Sig Elite Hunter 165gr
I'm getting a sw mp10 sport also, would you recommend a single or two sausage trigger?
I prefer two stage.
@@shootersresourcechannel642 sweet thanks!!
Where is your suppressor???
I bought my wife an mp15 sport 2 for about 500 when the market was good. I knew it wouldn't be used much so I wasn't going to buy her a kac.
She started to shoot it more and more and also became the neighborhood bicycle when friends came over. I started to change parts left and right upgrading it because everyone told me it wasn't fair that I was running a $3500 AR. Now, between sionics np3 bcg, A5 buffer system, barrel after about 15k rounds (maybe centurion, can't remember) and furniture, I have a $1500+ mp15.
What I'm trying to say is if everything works just upgrade the trigger or whatever parts you feel like need to be changed to better suit you. For this m&p10, seems like it's just the trigger
What are you using for a scope?
Leupold vx5 3x15
Any update on how it performs suppressed?
It performs ok.. I’m definitely going to have to explore an adjustable gas block when suppressed as it’s much more ammo sensitive. Im running the silencerco chimera, so it could be a different experience with a different suppressor.
1st gun I'm buying if Illinois lifts the ban
They won't.
@@bandjolyn they will
@@Alexanderofthe9th I hope so
Which optic is this?
Leupold vx5 3-15x44
Get rid of that crappy handguard w free floating barrel
It has 4140 barrel😢😢
Why are you holding your rifle that way ???
I have a Delta point mounted on a 45deg offset
It may be great, but why is the guy shooting it holding it like a ghetto gangster with the magazine off to the side?
:) look closely, I added a red dot on 45deg offset mount.. you have to hold the gun at 45 degrees to use the red dot. Plus I’m a ghetto gangsta :)
This is actually a technique. It helps with his head being straighter for CQC. My rifles have 45* flip up irons.
Had 1 and loved it to death. Got magpul mags and ruined the damn riffle. Every single time i pulled the trigger it jammed. I had 5 magpull mags. Each single one made the riffle jam up. Sent the riffle back got a psa and did the same with it. Then went with different mags. I will never never never ever again use plastic anything on my gear. Not even the connections on my straps I unfortunetly have a magpul butstock but it fits the role so i will let it be. I dislike it and it will probably end up in the trash soon.
