Brett Kenny is one of the most humble players in the game. I must admit when I was growing up all I focussed on was the Bulldogs beating Parramatta. I had my blinkers on with what Brett Kenny did in the game. But in 2021 (I’ve also read a lot of rugby league stories over the years) I’ve watched a lot of Brett Kenny highlights. In the books I’ve read both Mal Meninga and Peter Sterling both said he was one of the best finishes in the game. I personally would say after seeing what he did over the years, especially in Grand Finals he was the real deal. A player who when you needed someone to find something and get to the try line, Brett Kenny was your man. Absolute gun. One of the true champions of the game. But when he tells his story he downgrades his abilities and talks about everyone around him. He was better than he ever thought he was and deserved his spot for Parramatta, NSW and Australia. If I was building a dream team, he’d be in the team. My hero growing up was Terry Lamb. Lamb missed out on many a rep game because he had two champions vying for the five eighth position ahead of him, and they were Brett Kenny and Wally Lewis.
One of my hero's a kid. The Parramatta team of the early 80's was one of the best club sides of all time. I could never decide who was my favourite player, but it was always either Kenny, Sterling, Grothe, Ella, Cronin, Price or Taylor. I miss the 80's, Parramatta haven't been close to the same side since.
Brett Kenny, the Mighty, Magical, Mercurial, Maestro of Rugby League is without a doubt; In my mind anyway, the greatest player of all time. Every time I watch the Eels run out, I always have a second glance to see if Brett Kenny has decided to play again. How good was he? Wally Lewis always thought Brett was the best Five eight he ever played against, he should know.
Growing up I was a bulldogs supporter but always felt ‘Bert’ was the best player even better than ‘Baa Baa’. In ‘85 Brett came to my high school to present sports awards and I got an award and I’ll never forget shaking his hand and he congratulated me. He could play just about any position but showed his versatility going to centre while Wally was 5/8. Brett was the GOAT 5/8 of all time imo.
A rare world class talent. My favourite player as a young kid growing up. The swerve, the passing, the speed...he used to turn oppositions inside out when he had the ball. Two tries across three winning grand finals in a row, that says something too. He was simply breathtaking to watch.
Me too, my favorite player easily. Still yet to see a player who had it all like he did. I think the Immortals concept is bullshit - just creates arguments and why do we need it to appreciate players, but he should be one.
I find it interesting that Brett Kenny says Lewis was the greatest 5/8 but overwhelming the rest of the League community says he was. Gotta love his humility.
I think it comes down to the roll the 5/8 is playing. Lewis was a much better organizer than Kenny. Kenny had it all over Lewis in individual situations.
One of my all-time favourite players. Better than Wally, which he readily admits. Has to be an Immortal. For an Immortal to say there was a better player than him. Brett Kenny. I'm a Queenslander.
One of the best for Parra only wish that there is another Bret Kenny around who could do magic for the blue and gold. Anyway looking for a great season for Parra in 2014.
When Kenny talks about hand/eye co-ordination you listen, he might know a thing or two. Baseball - who knew! I`d say it`s fair to compare Jarryd Hayne with him, especially given how little support Hayne has had to play with. Qld must have danced for joy whenever Kenny`s name wasn`t read out for Origin.
As good as Wally was, Kenny literally dominated him in Origin. They faced off 12 times and Kenny won 8. Plus he won 4 comps with Parra in the tougher Winfield Cup. Certainly not denying Wally his immortal status, but if he and Mal are then I reckon Kenny should be too. Stan Jurd probably not.
Best player ever him or Wally imo. Didnt see the stats so...he it does seem to have a better track record but I think Wally was very dominant. Brett smoother, slick & speed? His passing game is the best ive seen I think.
an absolute brilliant player,Him and Lewis were not in the same class as everyone else..I wouldnt say Lewis was a better player than Kenny but i would say is that Lewis had a greater presence and was a great leader I think thats what gave him selection a lot of the time..watching kenny was like watching someone doing a card trick you think how the hell did he do that with all those guys arouhnd him..
Yeah for sure. And these guys ushered in the generation of big contracts without receiving them themselves. I’d be happy to see the NSWRL provide some financial support to these guys who made rugby league what it is.
Kenny, the greatest five eigth of all by a huge margin. how bozo and lewis are immortals ahead of kenny is one of the greatest jokes in rugby league history!!! absolutely batshit crazy
Parramatta & Canterbury were THE 2 dominant teams of the 80's without question. No one came close to either with the probable exception of Manly & Canberra at the end of the decade.
I like Brett Kenny but to say he was head and shoulders above Wally Lewis thats a load of crap and typical NSW bais bullshit even the GB and NZ players said that Lewis is far better then kenny and when Lewis was captain of Australia in 1984 you NSW and Sydney grubs showed your colours.
Some people you want them to live forever. Kenny is one for me. My all time rugby league hero
Such a humble player Brett Kenny 💙 💛 🐉
My all time rugby league hero. What a player - fast, clever, skilful and tough.

Thank you for your well constructed comment.

Such a humble man. A true champion.
Arguably the greatest Rugby league player of all time.
Always was Always will be
THE BEST.❤

If Steve Rogers played with Dragons, Manly of the 70s or Parramatta, Canterbury of the 80s. He would be called the greatest of all time. No argument.

great man, great athlete, and a supreme Rugby League player. One of the best players I have ever seen.
1985 the Brett Kenny challenge cup final, genius
LEGEND ♥️

I was just commenting on how great Brett Kenny was. What a gun.
Brett Kenny was a brilliant player and should be an Immortal , IMO.
not just your opinion!
Bloody legend....Lewis always praises Brett
A rugby league legend. So many great players for NSW in the 80s
one of the best if not the best

Parramatta 4ever 4ever Parramatta 💛💙💛💙
Sterlo not an immortal? he must definitely be up there as one of the best halfbacks ever
One of the best for Parra only wish that there is another Bret Kenny around who could do magic for the blue and gold. Anyway looking for a great season for Parra in 2014.
Those were the days of true footballers...not athletes like today...
Brett was both a footballer and an athlete that’s why he was so great.
Class.
Amazing era in RL. Eels vs Dogs were great clashes!
Immortal
What a Parramatta team in the 80's
Not getting my hopes up this year, these days they just can't finish off the job.
Love them just the same.
The greatest footballer to play the game
legend !!
Balance, pace and skilful ball player. Had it all.
Stan Jurd probably not.

great player, nice bloke
always had it over wally lewis.
Legend. Fav player of all time 🍒⚪️ Meninga a close second👍

Kenny was slick, fast and skilful. Wally didn’t have the finesse and fluidity but somehow made things happen.
Bert was the best.
its a shame that legends like kenny didnt get the contracts that the ungrateful attention seeking camera loving pretty boys of todays nrl get.
Yeah for sure. And these guys ushered in the generation of big contracts without receiving them themselves. I’d be happy to see the NSWRL provide some financial support to these guys who made rugby league what it is.
this is brilliant! Who was the interviewer? One of Australia`s best ever athletes in any sport.
Kenny, the greatest five eigth of all by a huge margin.
how bozo and lewis are immortals ahead of kenny is one of the greatest jokes in rugby league history!!! absolutely batshit crazy
The natural.
legend
Love ya Bert
My favourite 5/8 player
Followed by lewis, lamb,and lion
Its either him or wally as best player ever
Hendrix's left hand was another level though!
Parramatta & Canterbury were THE 2 dominant teams of the 80's without question. No one came close to either with the probable exception of Manly & Canberra at the end of the decade.
Something else
Great player talented
Head and shoulders above Wally Lewis, and he knows it.
Different. Id put king first. Super strong defence, kicking game, off-loads. Playmaking. Brett better faster runner, slicker.
Best five eighth of the '80s, better than that bloke from Qld.
Best runner of the ball of all time but that bloke from Queensland was best play maker.
Ronan Rogers Both not as good as that guy from Canterbury
