Gibson was a great coach, but geez he coached some clubs with unbelievably good playing rosters. Those Eels sides were almost state of origin quality, and 74-75 Roosters weren’t too shabby either

@@Paininthrneckhis biggest asset was his ability as a people manager.
Ron Massey was his eyes and ears who helped with player selection, game plans and tactics .
Very good at copying American Gridiron coaches.

@@Steveaustin007 you know it was when he started the gridiron stuff that East's started going downhill. Something people were blaming was introducing the nautilus fitness machines claiming it made the players too tired. Remember these were the days when you trained twice a week then destroyed it all at the pub afterwards.

State of origin backline but certainly not the forwards at Parra with the exception of price and Peter Wynn on occasions. Some highly rated coaches have had potentially great teams with much less success like at Easts in the late 70’s early 80’s; the rosters assembled at Manly in the early 80’s (and they should have won more comps in the 90’s) Parra and Dragons in the early 2000’s.

It was revealed that it was actually Ron Massey who was the mastermind. Gibson just implemented Masseys plans. Nowadays that seems to be the way all head coaches operate.

@@Paininthrneck it sure is. The assistant coaches are so important but there is little external recognition

I always thought Gibson was overated and far from a master coach. Some of his "expert" insights during the mid 80s SOO telecasts were too simple for a master coach. He didn't really give much except stating the bloody obvious, i mean the 12th man made him into a parody because of this. I am sure he was a good manager of players, but master coach he was not. But the parra players of the time all laud Gibson, i am sure had they had much more insight back then they prob wouldn't laud him as much.
And why wasn't Massey ever a coach? Didn't want to take on the massive responsibility?

@@glencoe1266 yep. If he was a MASTER coach he would have had better success with souffs and Cronulla.

The thumbnail has Steve Sharp, the same Steve Sharp that fucked Parramatta in the 2010s?
