This guy should be hired to make every how-to video ever. The descriptiveness is thorough without over-doing it, and the visuals and perfectly correlated. Exceptional work.
dude you made my day i used this video to do a correction problem as you explained it to us it was great video my mechanic two weeks ago told me that your lock hub is terminated sick proved wrong by your instruction great ❤🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much for this video. You're amazing! I can't believe the video was recorded 10 years ago! It answered all the questions I had while disassembling the hubs. My hub clutch was disconnected from the hub cover and I had no idea how to fox it, I thought i'd have to buy a new hub lock.
Just wanted to say this video saved me today. My truck was only getting drive to 3 wheels. After seeing that the shaft to the wheel was spinning in 4x4 I figured my hub dial was broken. I was able to take it apart, see that nothing was broken, clean and lubricate all parts, and reassemble. Now my '96 Tacoma is actually 4 wheel drive instead of 3. Thanks!
Hi Pete! Its me again..the clicking noise on my cruiser right front wheel. I used your video to strip the hub. I checked as i opened the hub...1st the connecting spring was wrongly fitted..2nd the clutch spring was also wrong..3rdly..the main problem..the lock washer was loose in front of the shaft..so it blocked the engagement!..the clicking noise was then from the driveshaft inside the diff?..the shaft was pushing backwards by the locking washer!..thanks again Pete for your video i clean , put new greese and assemble it according to your video. And Whala!! 100%...thanks Pete!!
Can't believe something that looks so simple could be so complex but so easy to fix. Thanks for the video. I thought my hub was broken when it went to install it and the spring came off, couldn't figure out how to fix it but this helped a lot!
It is Dec 2024 and this video from 9 years ago was a godsend!!! Someone had installed these completely wrong on a Samurai I purchased. The wheels were basically locked ON permanently… pushing the front differential while in 2H. I disassembled and reassembled correctly and now my Sammy is running so much better in 2H. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Dude you just saved me $100, the last I can do is tip you $5. When I took my hub assembly off, the clutch just fell out, after replacing my CV joint I knew something wasn't right because it wouldn't unlock after locking it, I figured it needed to be pulled back. Judging by the CV I replaced it was a rebuilt CV joint from NAPA and whoever did the job messed up the hub assembly. Thanks to this video I was able to take it all apart and rebuild it and now it works! Thanks for such a great how to video.
Thank you so much! I love seeing these kinds of comments where the video has really helped somebody save money. I also really appreciate the Superthanks!
God damn! I know this is a 6 year old video but it is one of the best DIY video I have ever seen. Now I can give maintenance to my Hilux's 4x4 locking hub dials, where I need a lot of force to move it. Thanks for the video.
Another thing that can make the dial hard to turn is a jammed up o-ring between the dial and the top cover. To get to that one you have to take the dial out of the top cover via the snap ring on the back of the dial cover. Be careful not to lose the detent ball and spring in the dial handle when you pull it out of the cover. I really need to sit down and do a video on that part also...
In Australia we call people who drive Landcruiser Troop Carriers, or Troopy’s...”Legends” Mate, you don’t need to drive one for me to call you that. In 5 mins you helped me fix something the service shop stuffed up. Thank You 🙏
I know it is five years old now, but this is one of the best if not the best tech videos I've watched. I was working on my Land Cruiser AISIN hubs and found it very helpfull
Thanks for watching! I figured when I made this that the information was stay relevant until there were no more of these hubs in use. It should be a useful video for a long time to come.
This is such a great how to. Couldn’t if anything clear on the web about how to rebuild these lock in hubs till I seen this. Definitely will be showing other people
I was doing my hubs and I thought they were permanently broken they were in bad shape but I watched this video and was able to put them back together and they work I'm so grateful to the algorithm gods for showing me your video thanks man
Thank you so much. Even when I compared the “broken” hub to the properly assembled one, I didn’t notice how the connecting spring held the pawl to the hub clutch. Lifting the spring over the tiny little tabs did the trick. I was ready to buy a new hub for big money, but only ended up spending about $4 for a new gasket. Makes me feel better, after reading some of the comments, that even some pro shops were assembling hubs improperly. I spent hours of frustration (intense swearing involved) trying to get the hub assembled, but after watching your video it took about 15 minutes to put it all back together and install. No swearing whatsoever.
I bought a really cheap 4runner and the guy told me on the test drive that he never tried 4x4. I found out the hard way 4x4 wasn’t working by getting stuck. I looked at service records from 2 years ago and the shop charged the owner at the time $520 to remove and replace both hubs - finding the right front hub needed to be replaced. Within 1 hour of watching this video, I had reassembled the hub that was improperly installed by procar and they had charged the previous owner $520 and made the 4x4 inoperable. Thank you!
I have serious doubts about the 59 people who down-voted this. How could you not like a video as informational and helpful as this? I've watched a LOT of instructional YT vids and this is right up there in the top 10. A most excellent tutorial. Today I had to disassemble, clean and re-assemble a set of these on a Hliux and I've never even touched one before. With the help from this tutorial I managed to do the whole job with both hubs and they work perfectly! Thank you indeed.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! After weeks of not being able to figure this out, you just made it simple for me. New skill learned. Please keep these videos up!
OMG, I just took apart my Suzuki hubs yesterday to clean them for the first time as one of them was so gunked up it didn't work. I was having trouble putting it back together and just watched this, the best how to vid ever! Going to put it back together tonight.
Top-tier tutorial. The circles and squares around the areas to focus on are a great idea, and the fact everything was clean and degreased was very helpful.
Wheelie Pete to the rescue! I recently purchased an ‘85 Toyota that had an immovable Aisin® hub on the right hand side. All fixed now and in short order too. Many thanks.
Just like all the other commenters have noted. This is one of, if not THE greatest how to video on UA-cam. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
First class video I have just fixed my ln106 it works a treat now. if you don't watch this intricate video step by step you will never get this right unreal thankyou so much
I just changed the left axle on my 75 series. Put it all together just as I found it (doing it all by youtube). Went for a 100 km drive to test it out. The hub became a bit warm, I wondered why. Got to review the freewheeling hub on youtube and saw that it had the bearing attached to the FW Hub. That wasn't the case when I pulled mine out and put it in. After taking off the other side I saw that the bearing was attached properly. Then I found your video. Just one of the best visual instruction videos I have ever seen. Thanks man. You probably saved me huge dollars.
I subscribed straight away and gave it a like. U just saved me 2 grand as a mechanic had told me my transfer case needed replacing. Watched your video and my drivers side was stuck and rusted and passenger side was engaged and would not dis engage. Did what ubsaid and all is smooth and perfect
Thanks mate, installed new disk rotors and brake pads today and couldnt get the hubs back on and somehow disassembled the whole thing. So glad I found your video
Thanks so much for the video. Just had to fix mine , and was struggling figuring out the springs. Your video was spot on and helped me get it back together correctly !! Thanks so much !
What an amazing video just got asin hubs cleaned it up and by accident every thing came apart and I had no idea how to put it back thank you so much !!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!! Thank you so much for a clear well explained video of how to fix these hubs. I can't believe the amount of videos that make this complicated or the one video where all it shows is the guys foot while he assembles the hub out of camera sight. Ugh. So thank you for a clear and well explained video. I'd give two thumbs up if I could.
Morry 2018 Brilliant, I removed one as it was not working (a cheap second hand Mitsubishi), stuffed around, read the manual but could not work it out, then your video came to the rescue , thank you.
I am overhauling my 95 Pickup and have watched what seems like a hundred videos on different things (many on the same thing). This video is what all technical videos aspire to be. Great job sir.
I just had the knuckles done on my 87 cruiser and when I first tried to lock my hubs they would not turn all the way to the lock position. Turns out the shop assembled the hubs incorrectly. This was the perfect video to show to to properly do this job. Thanks for a great video.
I spent hours and hours trying to get my fwh to work , I watched this video once and now the hub works wheelie pete you are a star. My 60 series land cruiser and I thank you!
+Sean Mccullough Glad I could help! It's just one of those things that's really easy to fix once you know what's going on, but not really intuitive if you're sitting there with it on the workbench in pieces.
Bought a 4 runner and this was a massive help in fixing the hubs. I would have never got my head around the still images on old forums. Thanks for vid!
Thankyou!! Wheeliepete, 2001 mk triton v6 first time up the beach, went to go turn the hub back after the beach run and it only turned halfway to "free"...drove it home thinkin "oh no..", found your video and bobs my uncle!, very well explained took me 25mins, 2 smoke breaks and a drive to supercheap for some lube, thanks mate!! Legend wheeliepete 🤗👍🏻👌🏼
WOW-Amazing video and super well done. The detail that goes into this demo is perfect and spot on. I jacked up all four corners and did locked and unlocked. Even turned hub dial from free to locked. Set the rig down to try on mud snow mix and it now seems to operate. Next week it’s going to woodys 4x4 to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Thanks for the info and the great videos.

Great video! Went to help a friend with this problem, and found it had been assembled incorrectly. It was missing the spring for the clutch...made us scratch our heads a bit, but easily found this excellent video and it all made sense. Thank you for posting this!
Man this is an awesome video - thanks a million ! I have a 60 series cruiser which I just bought and the right front hub lock wasnt working as it should - it would turn from free to lock but then it went beyond lock almost to free again, and the wheel stayed locked to the sideshaft all the time. Using this step by step video I was able to take it apart and reassembled it and its working again ! Disclaimer - I am NOT a mechanic and my friends start running when I approach a toolbox ;-) ;-)
Probably the most well explained and instructed video I have seen. I have had many yotas over the years all with aisin hubs, they have all worked great. But I bought a 85 axle for my 89 recently and the hubs wouldnt engage the axles. Thank you sir
Great video. Thank you for the clear and concise description of each part and the assembly. My Haynes manual had me scratching my head at how to put the thing back together.
This video was so user friendly and comprohensive that even a "girl" got it, and went out promptly to do it right. May have to replace the small spring,... Cos I stuffed up. Excellent learning experience though,... Thank you Wheely Pete! Please do a tutorial on the complete pull down of the 4x4 drive- Aisin.... And if possible a video on trouble shooting stuck front/rear breaks Isuzu [Holden Rodeo]....cause and effect....! Thank you again Pete, you rock! A cheers to logic!!!
Thank you very much. Just had to have a crash course in this reassembly, glad for your video! P.s. in my inattention and ignorance during removal, I thought that there was one spring, and that mine had broken - ha!
You just saved my ass ! i spent over an trying to figure it out. watching the video , i now know why the pawl wasn't attaching to the gear. Thank you !!
I've never had one come apart or come out wrong for me.....but it happened this weekend during swivel hub rebuild and I realized I had no fucking idea what the assembly looked like or how to re assemble it 😂😂😂😂👍 greatest video ever 🤘🤘🤘🚛💨👍
@WheeliePete THANK YOU!!! Getting ready to install some CV axles on a '98 Tacoma. Hopefully my OEM axles are not "damaged"... inner boots are broken and I don't know how long they have been? Not too long I know that much, but still. Anyways, I really like the parts layout and just EXCELLENT teaching on how to reassemble and test. Subscribed to your channel and keep up on the excellent work. I've never worked on manual locking hubs before and this video is just superb!!!
Excellent video... very professional, clear, precise and easy to understand. No pressure, but, looking forward to the whole hub disassemble/reassemble video... my bearings are shot and I need to rebuild them both. Thank you for posting!
This guy should be hired to make every how-to video ever. The descriptiveness is thorough without over-doing it, and the visuals and perfectly correlated. Exceptional work.
I agree...
Agree as well!
Yes yes
Best video for Aisin hubs. This video should be included when you buy a set of these hubs.
Thank you! 9 years later and this video is still helping people :)
bahahahah me too
I have came back to this video every time i have disassembled aisin hub. I hope this video will never dissapear from youtube.

You have covered the Asian hubs perfectly. there are a few videos that completely miss the crucial steps.
Thanks you.

Can't believe something that looks so simple could be so complex but so easy to fix. Thanks for the video. I thought my hub was broken when it went to install it and the spring came off, couldn't figure out how to fix it but this helped a lot!
It's amazing how simple, yet non-intuitive, that assembly is. You wouldn't believe how many shops get it wrong too. Glad I could help!

ever
Mate you made that so bloody easy to do cheers bud 👍
Thank you, Professor. You're the best: you made it clear and simple, you provided for the success of my project.

Those are likely all peeps with competing vids that don’t know their ass from their elbow. This guy is a gem.
Hands down the best tutorial I've ever watched on youtube.
Watched this for 5 minutes, took my hub off, fiddled with it, FIXED. Thanks a lot for this vid, much appreciation.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! After weeks of not being able to figure this out, you just made it simple for me. New skill learned. Please keep these videos up!

Thank you for the great explanation on this it has help me as a young mechanic to figure it out.

Sheer genius here. Absolutely saved my butt. Thank you sir!
First class video I have just fixed my ln106 it works a treat now. if you don't watch this intricate video step by step you will never get this right unreal thankyou so much

This litereally described exactly what my problem was after reassembling after some new wheel bearings. Thank you!
Thanks sir I did it myself getting help from your video on fj62 it’s 4wd works perfect engage and disengage 👍💕
Thank you so much for this great instructional video.
I fixed my hub today which was screwed by my mechanic.
wow, most professional video I have seen on youtube all day
THANK YOU!!!!!
Reminds me of Project Farm, very good video. Saved me when I couldn’t get my hub reinstalled. Thanks!
Amazing video brother, very very very useful.
I was about to buy new hubs because I thought mine were broken! Big hug
Morry 2018
Brilliant, I removed one as it was not working (a cheap second hand Mitsubishi), stuffed around, read the manual but could not work it out, then your video came to the rescue , thank you.
This is the greatest video for the hubs. i repaired them thanks to that and understand the insides fully now.
I am overhauling my 95 Pickup and have watched what seems like a hundred videos on different things (many on the same thing). This video is what all technical videos aspire to be. Great job sir.
this must be one of the most informative videos on youtube .... very good
Thanks. I got new manual hubs to replace my broken auto hubs on my 1994 Tracker. They came with no screws and ungreased. This was very helpful.
I just had the knuckles done on my 87 cruiser and when I first tried to lock my hubs they would not turn all the way to the lock position. Turns out the shop assembled the hubs incorrectly. This was the perfect video to show to to properly do this job. Thanks for a great video.
Maaaaaan, here I am looking for new hubs when all I needed is to reassemble mine properly. Awesome vid!
Great video, literaly spent 15min fixing my hubs.
best tutorial video, I hope this video never dissapears
That was the most thorough fact-filled comprehensive entertaining succinct video presentation I've ever seen.
(This video is a great example as to why sites like You Tube are such a benefit to people in their everyday lives.)
BTW I have both Asco and Aisin hubs for my FJ55 that I keep ready to rotate after a particular wet trip. I never really new what the difference was and thanks to this video, now I know! AND I am going to rebuild both hubs again via this video to make sure I am 100% correct.
Again-Great Video!!!!
Glad to hear it's freed up. Sometimes weird stuff just happens. That rig doesn't have any kind of electric or vacuum actuated parts in the 4x4 system, correct? Stuff like that causes random weird issues sometimes.
I have a 1990 Toyota and I saved this video for a very long time because I knew one day I would use this
and I was right. I couldn't lock my 4x4
and I followed this video and it literally saved my day! Thank you so much for this great video. It helped me so much!
wow, last day of 2024 and just used this vid again to solve my hubs. Thank you
This is the best video ever created in the history of the moving image lol I've been scratching my head with my hubs for 2 weeks, thank you
Appreciate you passing on your knowledge. Often times people are afraid to tackle issues on their vehicles cause they don't know what or how to do. Thank you.
Great video! Went to help a friend with this problem, and found it had been assembled incorrectly. It was missing the spring for the clutch...made us scratch our heads a bit, but easily found this excellent video and it all made sense. Thank you for posting this!
I've driving around with locked hubs for God-knows-how-long until today. Thanks for the video.
Same as everyone else. A proper, concise well illustrated instructional video. Great work Pete. Just subscribed.
As previously said this is the best instructional video or seen on UA-cam😀👍
This is still best illustration of Aisin hub assembly. Many thanks Pete
absolutely perfect tutorial mate ! basic , thorough and easy to follow . you just made my day a lot easier . thank you .
Probably the most well explained and instructed video I have seen. I have had many yotas over the years all with aisin hubs, they have all worked great. But I bought a 85 axle for my 89 recently and the hubs wouldnt engage the axles. Thank you sir
this fix it?
Thank you. I dropped the hub and it came apart. Had trouble figuring it out even though ive done it before. Probably with help from this video!
Great video. Thank you for the clear and concise description of each part and the assembly. My Haynes manual had me scratching my head at how to put the thing back together.
Thank you i was trying about an hour to fix it .....after your video the second wheel i did it in 10 minutes. Thank you again.
This video was so user friendly and comprohensive that even a "girl" got it, and went out promptly to do it right. May have to replace the small spring,... Cos I stuffed up. Thank you very much. Just had to have a crash course in this reassembly, glad for your video! P.s. in my inattention and ignorance during removal, I thought that there was one spring, and that mine had broken - ha!
this guy know 100% what he is doing and what he is saying
Hey Wheelie Pete, just used this video to do my Toyota LC series 70 front hubs. You are great at explaining.

Easily the best rebuild/how to video out there. Fantastic job mate.
Excellent video... very professional, clear, precise and easy to understand. No pressure, but, looking forward to the whole hub disassemble/reassemble video... my bearings are shot and I need to rebuild them both. Thank you for posting!
Thank you for the careful description and for showing a close up of each detail to look for. What a fantastic video.
