    Thanks for running the Browserbench 2 benchmark. Apart from the Linux command line, almost all my work is in the browser and so this one is relevant to me.

    Old computers are very useful. I purchased a foldable shopping cart, and I lined it with the equivalent to corrugated cardboard, but it was made of plastic instead. The side panels had to be folded inward to get them out of the way, before folding up the cart, but they also tended to flop around when the cart was open. So naturally, you remove the strong magnets from your old dead computer HDD, and use them to hold the side panels in place. The rest of the HDD becomes the base of your newly created DIY home made computer desk lamp. But many years later, two metal rods that are part of the cart frame, each broke into two pieces due to wear and tear. Naturally, you then use the old HDD case mounting adapters to clamp onto the broken rod pieces, all to hold the pieces back together as one, once again. Yep, very useful. LOL

    I have a small question. I'm planning to turn this into a pfsense machine. How was the fan noise after you fixed the ram issue and did you do any power draw tests?

    Good idea to replace the thermal paste. Buy the best quality thermal paste you can get. I found some paste with excellent thermal properties for only £5 at YFOS, Brand: BSFF. Remove the heatsink by unscrewing the 4 screws holding it in. Remove the existing paste by wiping it away with a tissue, or baby wipe. Clean the rest away with IPA. Allow any IPA to dry (a minute or two). Put on a tiny amount of paste on both the CPU top and heatsink. Wipe it on evenly with the plastic knife or applier (supplied). You only need a tiny bit of paste. I reckon less than 0.1g. Carefully put the heatsink back on.
    IPA = iso-propyl alcohol
    YFOS = Your favourite online store.
    W/m.k-2 = watts per square metre per kelvin; the stat your looking for. Higher the better. It's easy to find compounds with better than 11W/m.k-2. Get one of those.
    Get the smallest tube of paste they sell. 1g is plenty and will probably do ten applications or more if you only use the tinniest bit you can. The more paste you you use, the more will squeeze out sideways.

    My refurbished Lenovo computer did not work, but gave me plenty of error code beeps. It turned out that the BIOS was not adapting to the USB Keyboard that came with the computer. Instead, it was set for the wireless keyboard that was used during the testing of the computer as part of the refurbishing. The only way that the BIOS did an update to the present hardware, was to remove one of the RAM strips. That got everything up and going, and so I then reinstalled the second RAM strip, and all RAM was fully functional.

      @@jensdbe Very true, an older machine with just a RAM upgrade and adding an SSD to boot from makes them very usable for most tasks even today! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have a Think Centre m92p, and I've been trying to do a ram update from 4gb to 16gb. I purchased a 2x8gb kit. I put in two sticks. Got the memory error audio code. I then in just one of the 8gb sticks on the original slot where the original 4gb stick was. I tested both sticks in that slot, and both worked. Is there a setting that I'm missing so that both can be recognized and I have use of 16GB? Thank you.

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  Рік тому

      Make sure you are using the correct slots to insert the memory although using the wrong slot should get the machine to boot but with less good performance. I believe slots 2 and 4 should be used first on a M92p

    • @jensdbe

      As far as I can see, a s500 comes with 4th generation Intel Core CPUs. In general these would be faster, depending on the exact model, then the 2nd generation in the M91p.

    Do you think a Quadro 4000 with 80w will work with this PC

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  Рік тому

      Afaik a Quadro 4000 is pretty power hungry (around 140W). It's far from the fastest card so I wouldn't recommend it. A GTX 1050Ti for example uses a lot less power and is nearly 3x as fast.

      As far as I can find, it got released to the marked in August 2011. But they've been selling these for quite some time so it's not that surprising that in 2013 you could still buy it. I believe the M92p was introduced in the end of 2013.

    Do a video installing Linux (debian/Ubuntu or any) as these really support outdated models. After some setup Linux can do windows apps.

      @jensdbe  2 роки тому

      I did a few videos on Linux and use it on a daily basis. Just not as a desktop OS. It could indeed be a replacement for Windows on unsupported machines but I think that for the average user, it would cause a lot more adjustment and frustration that getting around the hardware checks :) Especially if they would expect to run their trusty Windows apps smoothless.
