Ok. For now on, singing Vulgaris Magistralis dressed as a disco-themed dutch barbarian with a majestic mustache is the official ritual to reach manhood.

They are legends. They were the first to sing rock in dialect, and thus revigorated the culture of regions that the urban regions of the Netherlands considered to be just backward hicks. Many bands would follow their lead, and put their own provinces/regions in the spotlight.
What I find so pleasant, is that I read so many comments from English speaking people here, considering the fact that this Dutch dialect must be pretty inconcievable to them... Great!!
As a dutchie myself, if I didnt have the lyrics on paper I wouldnt have a clue what its about except a weird-named badass riding a mammoth (or on sundays his mastodont)
Awesome, thought it was a Heidevolk song. Actually like this one more than Heidevolks now. The Heidevolk version is a little too refined and clean sounding.
Escuchando esta versión original deje de ser Colombiana y me volví Germana, Wodin y Donar están sentados acá y mi café se convirtió en cerveza. Mi esposo se convirtió en un Mastodonte y ya no le enseño las vocales a mi hija sino manejar un arco y flecha :v

super song for growling, even better when your drunk. :D But difficult to learn the lyrics when you are not dutch. At Heidevolk gig in Germany I did my best. I will ask my metal clubs for playing this...
Ik denk niet dat je kunt zeggen dat het origineel beter is dan de cover van heidevolk Daarvoor zijn de stijlen te verschillend, maar het origineel vind ik ook erg leuk
Ken iemand mij wijzen naar de volledige uitzending waar dit vandaan kwam? Vind het erg interessant in een cultuurhistorisch perspectief. Naast dat Normaal gewoon totaal awesome is natuurlijk.
At the end of the video, in the interview, the singer is asked what is "Vulgaris Magistralis", and the singer answers something like "well, Vulgaris means 'normal',..." (maybe they are playing with the band's name) and that's all what I could understand (Dutch is not my native language, I speak a bit of German though). Besides the explanations given by many here about Vulgaris Magistralis meaning, can anybody translate those last words?
+Nacionarg vulgaris means common or normal , magistralis does not exist in Latin (at least in pons dictionary) what comes near is magistra which means teacher or magistratus which means department , intended could hqve been : arte magistra - with the help of art - beside that the latin grammar seems not to fit either . . .
+Nacionarg Rough translation of the interview: "Normaal with Vulgaris Magistralis. Oh, does it taste well?" "Just taking out my singing dentures" "Vulgaris magistralis, what does all that mean?" "Vulgaris Magistralis is an 'Achterhoekse' version of Latin, new old Latin, and it means, Vulgaris is normal, and magistralis sounds quite nice." "And you have this entire background, brought with you for the tv recording here in Volendam, does it have a specific meaning? "This is our stage setting, we try to take the people when they're going out for an evening to an atmosphere that is out of this world." "Out of this world? Out of this time I'd rather say? It's prehistoric isn't it?" "Yes, and futuristic at the same time. Do you still get it?" *ROAAAR*
I do :) It's just an odd presumption since it's not even slightly suggested, not even with a play on words. So I was wondering what made you presume it in the first place.
Belial1125 SOrry its latin it means Vulgaris means common or derived from the common people, Magistralis etymology is from the Latin word Magister witch is teacher or master, as an adjective it means teacher, expert, or master. SO common teacher.
Well this is certainly weird. On one hand this is so much cheesier compared to Heidevolk's version (especially the video itself). On the other hand the vocal is awesome.
Since I first saw this, I've been looking under the bed and in the closet as part of my daily evening routine before going to sleep, to make sure this guy (lead singer) isn't there ( 4:58 ) Do I regret watching it?? Still no.
Can somebody tell me what he says about the meaning of "vulgaris magistralis"? I don't speak Dutch but by that little I hear I understand that he explains the meaning... or at least I think he does...
MoonWrath88 Its a myth described here, a mad professor heard the tale of a nephew of Odin and Thor, he rides ona Mammoth trough the Dutch Forests, and they try to catch him basically
MoonWrath88 He says that Vulgaris means Ordinairy (Normal, as the meaning of the name of the band), and Magistralis means Nice. What Jesus Christ says is the overal meaning of the song itself. And that is what the band is about; act normal as that is crazy enough already. (Dutch saying)
Every man on earth should learn this song and sing it at least once a day.
They have to wear that outfit too.

I listen to this song while dinner and now Odin is at my table too
Agustin Alejo Gimenez Itd be Wodan or Wotan in this case. Not odin. Spelling wise
could be either, mythologically speaking though i think oding was wodan's son, could be wrong though.

Heidevolk plays this song very well too :)

This music is something above incredible.
Totally love it, Normaal is my new favorite band!
Too bad they just recently broke up :/
Don't think 'broke up' is the right way to describe it. They just called it quits after 40 years.
They are returning!
They are legends. They were the first to sing rock in dialect, and thus revigorated the culture of regions that the urban regions of the Netherlands considered to be just backward hicks. Many bands would follow their lead, and put their own provinces/regions in the spotlight.
@@GrouRocks That's interesting, this dialect sounds so much better to me than any normal Dutch that I find.
Are those two giant dog treats he's using as drumsticks?......awesome!
matheas debattista I wonder how big must be the dog that can bite those things... O_O
I don't know how I came here from listening emo music, but I don't regret it and I love this and Heidevoolk version
Sabertooth Nietzsche whacking the microphone with his dog treats then trying to fix it.... with his dog treats is pure gold.
What I find so pleasant, is that I read so many comments from English speaking people here, considering the fact that this Dutch

As an english speaker who knows a bit of german, it's actually not hard to understand around half of it. I think this dialect sounds really cool too!
As a dutchie myself, if I didnt have the lyrics on paper I wouldnt have a clue what its about except a weird-named badass riding a mammoth (or on sundays his mastodont)
Love this so much, I wish they did more songs in this style.
This song completes my life and it is the anthem of being a man on this world.
Buen rock de Holanda que me gusta escuchar desde México
Love him singing with these vampire teeth . True barbarian.
The internet dubbed him as Sabertooth Nietzsche... that’s too funny
I first found this song with a picture of a massive Viking looking guy. This is my favourite version now just because of these mad lads wardrobe.
This version is like 20 years older than the heidevolk version.
Can't get enough of this song ...or the mustache ! :D
So this is the original???
+Tomorer yep
+Tomorer those exact words came to mi mind when i saw it still not bad at all
there is a cover by heidvolk

a zillion times more entertaining than anything in german television
This is awesome in so many levels!
So this magnific song got me a pretty nickname for YT, greetings from Andorra beloved dutch folk!
I have loved this for years.
Judging by the quality, thick mustaches, and overall camp, I'm gonna assume this was from the 70's?
