Bro, replace fishing line with hair of fiber optic core ( glass ). Use two hair separated several milimeters. Glass hair will give you better and clean flares. Get abundant fiber optic core trash at nearest telco operators.
also, the actual lens is quite small (20mm / 3/4") but the cat eye you cut out was like 40mm tall. most of the oval shape won't come thru. a clean oval cut of 20mm tall by like 10-12mm wide will perhaps create more properly shaped bokeh.
@@otegadamagic there's tons out there already. just open up the aperture, cut ovals out, put them in front of the lens, look at the bokeh and see the ovals. all im sayin is, MJ didn't cut an oval, he cut like a cat-eye shape which goes outside the glass area and consequently makes a rounded rectangle instead of a 2:1 oval shape like cinemascope has.
i'm not MJ but yes it'd work on zooms, and the output aspect is surely just a crop. start with a wide lens, shoot with the highest horizontal resolution possible, and crop down to taste.
I recommend putting the shape in the speedbooster, so all your lenses don't need a treatment and you only need to align once. (and yes, do not exceed the size of the glass and make a nice oval)
Nice video! p.s. It is easier (and more correct) just to calculate the absolute aperture by dividing the focal length by F-stop number - this is ultimately the largest pupil size, not the size of rear lens. The oval size you've got is too big even for large aperture FF lens :)
Also for the opening shot of this video 0:04, what are the exact settings, lens and is there any colour grade or post fx. I need to nail some nights shots with the g7, what lens should I get?
@@Machycz7 Hey, Have some questions some pple here mentioned thst this is the wrong way. So should I cut the cardboard in the shape of the glass and not like u did it? And also did you shoot 16x9? Thanks!
@@agustawicaksono Was going to say the same thing. The oval is too big. It should be about half the size. The top and bottom of the oval should be the size of the rear element

i've tried out that filter today and it works with my 20mm 1.7 panasonic lens. But i had an issue in a low light situation where i used a flashlight, where there was that light pointing on the wall there was a glitch where we could see in that light infinite black bar going up. One of the BEST videos on UA-cam. Thanx
Hi, great video, i have two questions:
- This works with zoom lenses?
- How do you get that aspect ratio? With render or what?
i'm not MJ but yes it'd work on zooms, and the output aspect is surely just a crop. start with a wide lens, shoot with the highest horizontal resolution possible, and crop down to taste.
I always thought people were adding "black bars" to their videos for a cinematic look. I had no idea that they didn't have a choice lol
You can literally crop it..its not a necessity
most people do. even in cinema, the only time they don’t is cinematographers using expensive lenses and stretching it out after
You don’t add black bars. You crop up and down 😊
MJ productions are the best productions! Tu kamarad brouky z Polska, dobre
why mine does not work?? the final result is just a black oval on the side of the frame, not changing the bokeh. I have an EFS 18 - 135...
Wow!! Earned a Subscriber. Will do this on my Sigma 18-35 on Panasonic GH5 + Speedbooster Ultra.
Tarun Wadhwa, did you test it with your setup and what is your experience?
I recommend putting the shape in the speedbooster, so all your lenses don't need a treatment and you only need to align once. (and yes, do not exceed the size of the glass and make a nice oval)
Help me out..
Do the black bars show by themselves?
Cause of the ellipse cutout or what?
It's work
In which aspect ratio
Thanks. I guess it might work the best with full frame and wide lens?
Hi, six years too late, but how does this work on the 10mm without heavy vignetting?
thx going to try this big fan of anamorphic lenses especially lens flares
Did u try it ? Did it work ?
About the part where u have to stick it, where do i stick it in my canon 55mm ?

You had me at headlights.
I think it does not work with zoom lenses or lenses with IBS, since you cannot place the filter right?
Nice video! Which adaptator did you use please?
Do you need fishing line for this to work? Or is it ok if I ditch it and have no light flares?
you can ditch it and have no flair, but i find any thin piece of string works!
You can do without it and use davinci resolves light streaks effect to get the flares in post
Ty jo tohle zkusím ;) ty světla vypadají dobře (y)
Došlo na zkoušení, povedlo se?
Does this method also work if you are using the metabones speedbooster also?
Should be :)
Do you just get the flares or the stretch/crop factor as well?
Just flares and a bit of "anamorphic bokeh" :)
Can it works with smartphone ?
Hi, I think you got it wrong. The shape in the middle should be an oval shape.
Hi, thanks for comment. I know now.
Has anyone tried using the fishing line "anamorphic streak effect" on wide-angle lenses?
Avery Del Miller I used it on my sigma 16mm 1.4 works like a charm.
Also for the opening shot of this video 0:04, what are the exact settings, lens and is there any colour grade or post fx. I need to nail some nights shots with the g7, what lens should I get?

Mauro Scarone So, show to make it right? at 1:27 , should we make the oval shape only right behind the glass area?

What aspect ratio is this? 2,40?
Wider, something like 2.66 or 2.76
Holy moly haha
2.76x1 tarantino used this for the h8ful eight
Odise Tocka is there any way to make this into a 2.35:1 aspect ratio?
just render in 2.35:1, don't use bars!
Is that Cambridge?
yes :)
