Praise God for his compassion and grace. Loving him more than he loves us is impossible. So let us enjoy the grace and love for him in our lives. Praise to God the most high above the stars. Bless him forever more.
Ah. I can feel my heart absolutely screaming out to God when the first verse starts. Truly Bach has captured the feeling of the words with his dark, aching music. The counterpoint is like the endless crying of a thousand souls on this heavy earth raising their voices to heaven. Ah God! from heaven see us below. See our suffering, hear our cry. We call out to you. This year has been a hard year for me and for many others. May we all cry out to God with a fuller realization of our need for him, falling on his everlasting love.
Thank you for sharing such priceless beauty. Even as a small child the hairs all over would stand and tingle! Yet I still listened mostly to Rock in those days. I do both now, but I'm totally captured by Bach! Praise God for his passion and unbelievable gifts!
In the first movement, the mournfully decending notes give such a strong impression of Gott looking down from holy Himmel upon man's dark and broken estate. Bach's cousin J.G. Walther (named after Martin Luther's musical partner!) called this technique catabasis or descensus in his priceless book "Musical Lexicon", which gives insight into Bach's techniques.
00:10 _1. Coro - Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein ( Oh God, look down from heaven ) 04:15 _2. Recitativo - ( tenor, bass) Sie lehren eitel falsche List 05:33 _3.
You can really hear those descending chromatic notes, Bach's plea of God to "look down from heaven" in the chorus, with the cantus firmus in the alto, doubled by the oboes.
This is one the first cantatas I heard in college and I was so transifixed that so many years later I can still 'see' how awed I was to hear something so elevated.
Same, I was immediately haunted and provoked to deep thought and emotion by the anxious, aching sound of the music, the creativity and newness, and the words.
Wolff (biographer) writes that the first cantata of this cycle, BWV 20, is in a more modern, French style; and the second one, BWV 2 "stresses the weight of tradition" [Christoph Wolff (2000), Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician]
rdubugnon I understand that the BWV is a thematic index rather than a chronological one, but how are works from the same theme arranged? I mean on what basis was one cantata given BWV 1 rather than 2?
Exactly! Not chronological, but grouped by genre, and the BWV is not complete yet. Scholars estimate that Bach wrote close to 300 cantatas of which only 224 have been identified so far. It's still possible that someone somewhere in a random German archive accidently stumbles across an unknown Bach cantata.

BWV 2: This one was pretty good. I won't do an in-depth analysis cause that's boring. I'd say it's not quite as good as BWV 1, but it holds up, and it definitely doesn't have any bad movements. However, nothing really sticks out, and as such, I can't give it a super high rating. I'm going to say 7.5/10.

Prayer is the sigh of an oppressed people.
Sometimes, yes. A sigh toward God.
That was beautiful. God have mercy on us sinners. For we don’t know anything.

Wow ~~ I love bach's music. thank you~~
Bach is something else entirely.
Thanks for this inspiring cantata.

do not get confused with the BWV number and the year they were composed...
Umm, maybe he traveled Bach in time.

@@jaikee9477 I didn’t know only 224 of his cantatas were catalogued! I guess that means I’ve listened to all of his available cantatas!
Very Very Beautiful JS. BACH (1685-1750)...
Love This...👍👍👍💯
Done...🙏🙏🙏
These early cantatas are especially inspired. 1,2,4,5,6!
They are not early cantatas. The BWV order is not chronological.
@@frenchimp And yet, they are--without a doubt--especially great!
Belíssimo!
IMMENSO BACH

CHRISTUS VINCIT,
CHRISTUS REGNAT,
CHRISTUS IMPERAT,AMEN.
That is his second composition. I will have the chance to listen more 1094 excellent pieces!
aroaldo paulino souza actually his initial were lost. The BWV is not thematic. Also it consists of 1080 works
This is by no means his second work just because its BWV #2. Composed when he was 39 years old.
Is that a lady singing the alto aria? Who are the other singers?

Get a REAL job
Which is about 7/10 more than I (and probably you) could manage.
@@malcolmdale If one is to judge intelligence by how little of what you say (or write) is understandable, then you're a veritable genius.
I'm pretty sure Bach would be very concerned by your appraisal.
Cringe
It sounds like a whiny polemic TBH. Like the 16-18th century equivalent of "the family is under attack"
How like an anti-family person to use the word "whiny" when commenting on Bach.
Es sollte Meer und nicht Bach heißen
