Antonio sferlazzo: I'm not a great fan of Harnoncourt (his recordings of Bach's cantatas are overshadowed by those of his colleague Gustav Leonhardt ) but this performance of the Magnificat is really great. The soloists are magnificent.

In Bach's time, they didnt have holes in their natural trumpets. Also he certainly did not have access to so many singers and players and of course no female singers.

Sang this as a kid in the Vatican for Pope Paul with the Harvard Glee Club as a member of the Newark Boys Chorus in 73 under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Still brings tears to my eyes. We sang it with no music, I was 13yrs old then we had it all memorized along with 2 other scores

I am an accompanist for a wonderful choir that will be performing this in two months. The choir, orchestra and soloists are top notch and I appreciate the fact that the tempos are not so extreme (fast). The conductor really lets the listener appreciate the complexity of this wonderful work. Bravo to all involved!

Through the magic of the internet I continue to explore and discover the amazing music left for us to enjoy. Today I discovered this creation that pierced my heart with the glory and patience my Father has for me and testify that I know Bach's talent was guided throughout his life by GOD Almighty. What a gift to hear all these beautiful people assembled together in one purpose to bring to life a message from God through the mind and hands of Bach. My hope is that I will continue to receive these gifts as I search the internet.

John Dudek I am planning a biopic called the Passion of J.S. Bach. I believe what you say is correct about his relationship to God. He was a very humble, emotionally sensitive and deeply spiritual man. While his contemporaries busied themselves with currying court favor and accumulating wealthy patrons and fancy high-profile appointments, Bach contented himself with grinding out a new contata every week, in a church in a relatively provincial section of Bavaria where his grueling schedule included duties as choirmaster to a generation of likely unruly and lively youngsters and producing 13 children with his one wife. I find this deeply moving.

The use of soloists in the sicut locutus section differs from other performances in which groups of the choir perform this section.
Don't know what Bach himself meant, but this performance is superior to all others.

    Csodát művelt erős karjával:
    a kevélykedőket széjjelszórta,
    hatalmasokat elűzött trónjukról,
    kicsinyeket pedig felmagasztalt;
    az éhezőket minden jóval betölti,
    a gazdagokat elbocsátja üres kézzel.
    Gondjába vette gyermekét, Izraelt:
    megemlékezett irgalmáról,
    melyet atyáinknak hajdan megígért,
    Ábrahámnak és utódainak mindörökké.
    Dicsőség az Atyának, a Fiúnak
    és a Szentléleknek, miképpen kezdetben,
    most és mindörökké! Ámen.

My go to performance for this piece is the Bernstein with Tourel in the Mezzo, although Betty Allen was terrific as well. I recall being impressed with Madame Allen's live performance in the late 60's. Rest In Peace all...Bernstein...Tourel...and Allen.

English translation:My soul doth magnify the Lord.
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
Because He hath regarded the humility of His slave:
For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me; and holy is His name.
And His mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear Him.
He hath shewed might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away.
He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy:
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.
Glory be the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forever and ever, Amen.

The only minor flaw was the barritone's rushing the very last line of Sicut Locutus Est (number 11). Otherwise, a magnificent performance of the Magnificat! Bravo!

    BWV 243 - Magnificat
Tradução de João Ferreira de Almeida (Lucas I; 46-56)
    1. Coro
    Magnificat anima mea Dominum.
Engrandece a minha alma ao Senhor.
    2. Ária
Et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.
E o meu espírito se alegra em Deus, meu Salvador.
    3. Ária
    Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae;
ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent
    Porque atentou na humildade da sua serva;
    Pois eis que, desde agora,
    Me chamarão bem-aventurada
    4. Coro
    omnes generationes.
    todas as gerações.
    5. Ária
Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est, et sanctum nomen eius.
Porque me fez grandes coisas o Poderoso; e Santo é o seu nome.
    6. Ária
Et misericordia a progenie in progenies timentibus eum.
A sua misericórdia é de geração
Em geração sobre os que o temem.
    7. Coro
Fecit potentiam in brachio suo, dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.
Com o seu braço, dissipou os soberbos
    No pensamento de seu coração.
    8. Ária
Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles.
    Depôs dos tronos os poderosos
    E elevou os humildes.
    9. Ária
Esurientes implevit bonis et divites dimisit inanes.
    Encheu de bens os famintos,
    Despediu vazios os ricos.
    10. Ária
Suscepit Israel puerum suum recordatus misericordiae suae.
    Auxiliou a Israel, seu servo,
    Recordando-se da sua misericórdia.
    11. Coro
Sicut locutus est ad Patres nostros,
Abraham et semini eius in saecula.
    Como prometeu a nossos pais,
A Abraão e à sua posteridade, para sempre.
    12. Coro
    Gloria Patri, gloria Filio,
    gloria et Spiritui Sancto!
Sicut erat in principio et nunc et semperet in saecula saeculorum.
    Amen.
Glória ao Pai e ao Filho
    E ao Espírito Santo.
    Como era no princípio,
    E agora e sempre,
E pelos séculos dos séculos. Amén.
