I read a great comparison of the song which to me holds totally true: When Whitney sang the song, she was singing it to the entire world. When Dolly sang it, she was singing it to me. Two totally different interpretations of one amazing song.
that's because she specifically wrote it for Porter Wagner. she felt she needed to spread her wings, and fly; so, she wrote this song, before breaking their partnership
Dolly was on the Porter Wagner Show and did duets with him, also. She agreed to stay for five years. Porter was upset when she wanted to leave and go solo. She went home and wrote this in one night. After hearing the song, Porter understood and they remained close friends. Knowing this makes it so much more emotional. Dolly always appreciated Whitney’s cover and joked about how much money she took to the bank off it❤️
Dolly also bought Porter Wagoner's songs back for him when he fell on hard times later in his life. She bought them all and gave them to him with no strings attached.
@@mem1701movies He did understand. He didn't sue her until years later after he ran out of money. Dolly was always grateful to him and never resented him for his downfall. In fact, she went out of her way to make it easier on him even after he sued her. There was a really good Drunk History episode on it.
Dolly has said first time she heard whitney sing this song on radio. She had pull over and cryed because of how beautiful whitney sang it. Everytime Dolly rereleases this song it goes straight to number 1
Dolly's version will always be my favorite. Its so soft and genuine. I would never discredit WH version. Its pretty amazing but there's something so genuine about Dolly's version. WH sang it but it came from Dolly's heart.
I'm a big fan of Dolly, and this is my favourite song. But Whitney's rendition is awesome, and I'm not a fan of Whitney's, I like her, but nowhere near as much as I adore Miss Dolly.
Her duet with Kenny Rogers ( the Bee Gees written "Islands in the Stream" mega-hit) or her trio with Linda Rondstadt & Emmy Lou Harris singing a cover of Neil Young's "After the Goldrush"

The only time that use instruments is when you actually see them. If you don't see the instrument it is strictly their voices /beatboxing, harmonies and Bass
Dolly is a storyteller in the Smoky Mountain tradition. We Southerners call her Miss Dolly...always...because she is just one fine human being. She’s written thousands of songs and many of them were made huge by other people. Perhaps Carol King and Willie Nelson are the only ones as prolific. She has given away more books than anyone has, employs about 5K people with her company (most from the poor Appalachian area where she was raised), and genuinely cares for those who cross her path. Very humble despite her successes. I recommend Coat of Many Colors because that song embodies her values about more than any other. So good.
As extraordinary as Whitney was...her angelic voice....I will always choose Dolly's version. It was written and sung from the heart....simple melody no frills or fuss. Grew up listening to Dolly and definately a rabbit hole y'all should check out

I remember reading an article about this in Billboard magazine and they said Dolly’s origins version was a soft, sweet longing for a love that had to end. They said Whitney’s version was more of a cry of pain and anger for a love that couldn’t be. Sounds about right.
Dolly never takes herself too seriously. As she has said it takes a lot of money to look this cheap. Some others songs to show her range would be "9 to 5" (it was a great movie too), "Jolene", "Coat of many Colors" (about her growing up in poverty in the Smokies), "Here You Come Again", "Wildflowers". She has also dueted with numerous artists.

I struggle watching reactions to Dolly. Because when I watch a reaction video, I want to focus on the reactors facial expressions. I want to live vicariously through the reactors. I want to hear the song again for the 1st time through somebody else. But, when it's Dolly, I end up either watching her or just closing my eyes and singing along. But only in my head. Always in my head.
There's a reason Dolly is a LEGEND but probably the biggest is that no matter who you are when you are listening and watching her she WILL bring a smile to your face. I saw you guys both smile so many times, which happens to everyone. Just that is something very very special.
FINALLY a reaction channel that actually "reacts" and gives commentary and comments on the songs. Watching a video and going "ooo i like that" isn't commentary and fair use. Good job guys
Her singing voice and her personality has never changed since she entered the music scene. She always comes off as being caring, kind hearted, witty and off course talented.
The first time I saw Dolly Parton was when I was 13 years old and caught her on the Porter Wagoner show in the early 70s. I wasn't a country music fan, but it didn't matter, because being a young boy, I couldn't get past her beautiful appearance and that figure. Oh my! Since then, I've realized that Dolly is so much more than big hair and big other things. Song writer, performer, philanthropist and just a beautiful person inside and out. Love you Dolly.
Country music icon Dolly Parton has revealed that she used some of the royalties she earned from Whitney Houston's cover of her song "I Will Always Love You" to invest in an office complex in a Black neighborhood in Nashville, Tenn.
There's been times where this song, Dolly's version, has brought a tear to my eye. Not because I was sad or heartbroken, but because somehow, through her voice alone, Dolly can make you feel what she's felt. It's beautiful. 'Jolene' is another example of the ability Dolly has to allow you to feel her emotion through her voice. Hope you listen to it too.
Listening to to Dolly sing "I will always love you" is like listening to your lover whisper in your ear in the bedroom, while listening to Whitney Houston sing "I will always love you" is like hearing someone belt it out in the front yard so the whole neighborhood can hear. Both are great, but I prefer the former. Whitney is powerful and Dolly is intimate, authentic, and a joy to listen to.
I've always said that there's Dolly's original and then there are the karaoke efforts, including Whitney's. I don't know about the USA but in pub karaoke, in the UK, we get many a half cut females warbling the Whitney way. A bit like 'Hallelujah' which was ruined, by the warblers and shouters, who all missed the point of Leonard Cohen's excellence and meaning - although KD Lang and Rufus Wainwright did get the meaning, and the intention, of what Cohen wrote and sang.
If you felt like you had an instant best friend for life watching, listening to her sing that song, you're not wrong. Had the privilege of seeing her 2 years in a row in late 70s. She stayed for HOURS after shows meeting with fans, taking pics, etc. I know now as an adult there's no way she remembered me from one year to the next, but the 8 yr old me was on cloud 9 because Dolly said she did. She truly is a caring, generous, gracious and GENUINE woman.
Her early live version of “Coat of Many Colors,” where she’s playing the acoustic guitar using her crazy long finger nails as “guitar picks.” Coat of Many Colors, which she also wrote, was her most autobiographical song.
Willie Nelson wanted to sing this song but dolly wouldn’t let him. She let Whitney Houston song it because she knew she could do it justice. Good choice. I love willie but Whitney just had that timeless once in a lifetime voice.
Elvis wanted to sing it but when Col Parker told her she would have to give Elvis 50% of the rights to the song to Elvis, she said no. Dolly never gave up ownership of her work. She retained 100% of ownership in all her music. She was not only a great singer and songwriter, she was a great businesswoman.
Two of my favorites of Dolly's are Coat of Many Colors and He's Alive! She's just awesome. She also won a Grammy Award not long ago for her collaboration video of "Jolene" with the amazing a capella group, Pentatonix! They are amazing & together they were totally awesome! 💖
I didn't even know that was a Dolly song up until a few years ago. The Whitney version is just as good and it sounds like a completely different song. 2 incredibly awesome women singers with their own unique styles
Dolly has a way with words-Once when I was sick I listened to most of her audio book about her life. It was so real and sounded just like she was talking to me. It says a lot about a song that so many people want to sing it.
Dolly said in an interview that she knew this was her big song the best she'll ever Wright. ......... until she heard whitney sing it. She said I knew that was not my song anymore. Shes a great person
I love her version of "He's Alive", the power she puts in to that song!!! I am not a church going person but I listen to that song every Easter morning!!!
Dolly once said in an interview when asked about people not knowing she wrote or recorded that song. Her reply was “doesn’t bother me, I laugh all the way to the bank when Whitney sings it!”
I’m not a big country fan and Dolly isn’t my favorite musician. But I can’t think of a more admirable and fascinating person on the planet. She is amazing to do what she has done in so many industries at such a high level. She has never changed even though she has massive amounts of money.
Her Bluegrass cover of the song is amazing. She also covers Barry Saddler's 'Ballad of the Green Beret' and it gives it a complete makeover and brings a knot to your throat.
The talking to the people made it more sincere, personal, and touching; especially the way Dolly would do it....It makes for a more emotional and captivating performance
here is a little history info for for ya'll. Elvis Presley wanted to sing this song but Colonel Parker wanted to purchase the rights to the song and Dolly refused to sell it because it was her Baby. True Story
I grew up with the original but also appreciated Whitney's take on it. Dolly's version is a sweet & melancholy love song to bid farewell to someone special. Whitney turned it into a powerhouse love ballad that most modern listeners know. Please check out her duet with Kenny Rogers - Islands in the stream. Other Dolly hits - Two doors down, Here you come again, Coat of many colors, Me and Little Andy, Please don't stop loving me (duet with Porter Wagoner) among many other great songs she has written/performed. :-)
This was one of my favorite songs ever! The Whitney did it and I still prefer Dolly’s version but you know how that is. It’s very rare to prefer the cover.
There are SO many great Dolly songs.. Here's some others for you to consider: "Jolene," "Little Sparrow," "Silver Dagger," "Down from Dover" (be prepared to cry), "The Grass is Blue," "Light of a Clear Blue Morning," "Early Morning Breeze" (so slick), "Coat of Many Colors" (probably the song that defines her career), "Islands in the Stream," "My Blue Tears," "Tomorrow is Forever" (with Porter Wagoner)...the list goes on and on and on and on. She is the best songwriter working today.
When I see this video it takes me back in time to when she wrote it. She is singing that song to Porter Wagoner a huge country star at the time who introduced Miss Dolly Parton to the world and from their she took over her own destiny and has been a blessing to humanity in everyway. She wished him Love. Just so touching her words.
Finally someone listens to the original verson of this song. She wrote it to Porter Wagner who she was under contract with. This song was to let him know she was leaving his show to go out on her own. It took a law suit to get out. I guess nice didn't work. She sang it in the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. It's basically a musical comedy. Not for children. Try Islands in the Stream, a duet with Kenny Rogers.
Welcome to the women of Country in the 1970s. The higher the hair, the closer to God. 😊 Dolly did a great job on this, Whitney Houston took it to another level. I love both. Jolene and Coat of Many Colors are two of hers to hear.
Dolly Parton is a phenomenal songwriter. She wrote this song out of a special place in her heart for Porter Wagoner and his show. Her performance in this video is her Goodbye song to The Porter Wagoner show to embark on her solo career.
Dolly Parton also has just the tiniest bit of a yodel at times ~ I noticed this on the word "always,” I think. This is a country thing that some country singers (those who can do it) add to their singing ~ adding a quick jump up and then landing on the note they mean to sing.
A tale of two Queens, Ms. Dolly and Ms. Houston, fact! very good reaction, I enjoyed seeing you experience her for the first time. That's what's so great about music, its colorblind :)
I still like Dolly's soft, gentle version the best. She wrote it, and she SANG it.
Chris , I soooooooooo concur. I can’t stand Whitney’s version and I adore Whitney.
Dolly has such a PURE tone. I think my fav song is still coat of many colors
Dolly Parton version was full of emotion & I can relate to it
She sang the hell out of that, and meant it!
I read a great comparison of the song which to me holds totally true: When Whitney sang the song, she was singing it to the entire world. When Dolly sang it, she was singing it to me. Two totally different interpretations of one amazing song.
Not only did she write it, she took it to #1 twice!
Dolly sings it to you personally, while Whitney sang it to the whole world.
that's because she specifically wrote it for Porter Wagner. she felt she needed to spread her wings, and fly; so, she wrote this song, before breaking their partnership
Dolly once said “Whitney can take the credit as long as I take the money” lmao 😆
She calls the building her main office is in, 'The House That Whitney Built'

I was going to say this. Hearing how she loves knowing people sing her songs is very cool.
Me: “I don’t really care for country music”....
Also Me: *”I LOVE ANYTHING SUNG BY DOLLY!”* ❤️
haha exactly!
Country is my least favorite of the major genres but I still love Dolly, Loretta, Cash and Cline. Good is good.
Same here, girl!!!
That's because Dolly is real country.
The stuff they produce now isn't country. It's the new contemporary country, and it sucks.
you would love Townes van zandt

Dolly’s voice is so delicate and fragile on this. Completely different from the booming Ms Houston. Both great in their own way.
I much prefer Dolly's beautiful rendition.
Agree.
@@jeanettesmith765 Yes, because this was an intimate, beautiful song NOT MEANT to be belted out.

I've loved Dolly's version since the very first time I heard it, many years ago. As much as I love Whitney, this is Dolly's Jam! God bless'em both!💕🤗💕
Whitney had the better technique, Dolly had more emotions. And it's her song, Whitney just copied it.

Another amazing song y’all might dig: Willie Nelson and Ray Charles “Seven Spanish Angels.”
I just love how you both are so genuine, but even more, unlike so many other reviewers, you don't keep interrupting the song! Happy new sub!
Dolly does a phenomenal cover of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," by the way. No lie.
She also did a great cover of Collective Soul's "Shine". No lie. :)
Man im so glad you posted this
Just watched Dolly's Stairway to Heaven cover and omg it's fabulous
@@brigadierblue221 YW. Two iconic artists.
Islands in the Stream duet by Dolly and Kenny Rogers written by Barry Gibb of the BeeGee's, Highly recommend!!
I loved watching you watch Dolly!!! I'm glad you enjoyed
"Islands In The Stream" is a great song also. Keep up the great vids!
Yes Dolly was the yen to Kenny's yang
Absolutely!! Those two killed it when they did a duet. That is one of my favorites.
Barry Gibb wrote that song.
here is a little history info for for ya'll.
So effortless. She just climbs those octaves. Wonderful song and singer songwriter!
This was one of my favorite songs ever! The Whitney did it and I still prefer Dolly’s version but you know how that is. It’s very rare to prefer the cover.
Dolly Parton is beautiful person and very humble and sweet! She sings this song with all her heart. She’s a great artist!! 🙏❤️
"An Eagle When She Flies" is by far the best song she ever wrote and sang, it shows her real range!
Dolly is a GIANT of pop and country music. Thx for posting!
It is so so wonderful hearing you talk positively aboutDolly
Dolly has more talent in her pinky finger then most other artist’s have in their whole body!!!!!
Listen to her sing, "Coat if Many Colors". It's a true story if a coat her momma made her.
You wanna hear her belt out"Jolene"!!!
Voice of an angel. Whitney and Dolly are two songbirds that will never be duplicated.
Dolly made a bundle letting whitney cover her song.
Dolly has alot of power in her voice, which she uses to drive songs like this deep into your heart and soul.
Islands in the Stream. LOVE IT! Lady by Kenny Rogers is a great one too. THE BEST Kenny song to me.
Dolly wrote I will always love you and Jolene on the same day! Amazing woman, you will not be disappointed 💕
React to “9-5” and “Jolene” is a must! Also react to her with Kenny Rogers! Their chemistry was AMAZING!
Yeah, Dolly and Whitney are both beyond comparison. These two have great ranges and meanings, arrangements, etc. Beautiful!
Sometimes you feel like Dolly, sometimes you feel like Whitney. 🥰
Dolly Parton also has just the tiniest bit of a yodel at times ~ I noticed this on the word "always,” I think.
This is a country thing that some country singers (those who can do it) add to their singing ~ adding a quick jump up and then landing on the note they mean to sing.
Another rabbit hole is how many hits Willie Nelson wrote for others.
A tale of two Queens, Ms. Dolly and Ms. Houston, fact! very good reaction, I enjoyed seeing you experience her for the first time. That's what's so great about music, its colorblind :)
