  • If this video we fully explore the Dell Precision T7920 workstation. The T7920 we are demonstrating on has two Intel Xeon sockets but only one of them populated. We did this to allow for future expansion to protect our investment. We:
    Unbox
    Perform a basic disassembly
Install two sets of Dell Flexbay expansion drive bays at the rear of the machine
Install Windows 10 Enterprise and benchmark it with NovaBench

An unboxing of a product that hasn't been deliberately dragged out and is actually concise and to the point? Exceptionally rare on youtube! well done mate!

It was crazy opening the Rear Flexbay box and being like "Where do all these cables go". Thanks for saving a couple of hours figuring it out.

This is a solid machine! If I had enough for this model, would definitely pick it up. However, the T5820 I got is not too bad either.
    Thanks for this great video!

When you connect the hard drives, PCIE and NVME connections are supposed to go to the top. SATA is supposed to go to the bottom.

Great video tutorial ... persuaded me to attempt the upgrade, lacking a DELL equivalent. Thanks a bunch.
Storage kits difficult to source: mine came from eBay firm thinkpan in San Diego.
They will ship to the UK (for a price!).

Do those backplanes automatically connect to an onboard raid controller? Is there a way to pass them dirctly to the OS without any RAID? Say for a TrueNAS raid? Considering getting one of these for a TrueNAS raid along with esxi/proxmox, docker containers, homelab etc..

Hello, I'm looking to buy a T7920, but have an issue on backing up the data in a timely manner. My thought is using WD SATA drives at 20TB and 8 of them in either RAID 60 or 10. The issue is how to backup all this data in a reasonable time. I read in the T7920 manual about the 9440 and 9460 supporting an external enclosure storage. I forget the page number, but think it is 90 or so. Now for the question: What backup method on the T7920 do you recomend for large storages? Thank you.

This video was incredibly helpful in installing the rear flex bays, I have the same 7920 tower and flex bay parts. I was able to plug in the fan cables and other sockets. However, I don't have a power supply coming from my motherboard to actually power these bays (specifically where you plug in at 6:44). Is this a separate part I need to install to power the flex bays? Dell has NOT been helpful in this regard, they even sent a technician to try to install for me and they didn't know either.

I got the 575-BBSO kit and it came with a cable W8X9X. That split the power between flexbay 2 and rear bays 3 & 4.

I had to order them directly from Dell and I used my Dell rep to get the right parts... there were A LOT of options.

You can configure the T7920 with all options, including 3+TB of RAM and the price is close to 125K :)
