    Those HDD-2 fan header ports don't put out power unless you turn them on in the BIOS config.

      Thanks for that tip. I saw the fans spin up, but I didn't know there was a setting for them in the BIOS config. I'll definitely check that out. Thanks Chris!

    This and your other T7910 videos "talked me into" buying a T7910. I got a basic one ($250USD for one processor, 16GB, 1TB HDD) and I'm going to upgrade to two CPU, 128GB to run VMs, and extra storage for 8 SAS3 SSD. Looking for that drive bay kit now. :)

      Let me know how it works.
      Today I should be receiving a T7910 2x 16C processors 192GB RAM, 12.96TB SAS storage. and installing a 8GB card. Hoping this should be everything I need with a workstation. School, video production and everything else.

    Do you think buying old workstations like this one is a good idea in 2021? For virtualization? For gaming? Is it easy to get spare parts?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 роки тому +5

      Yeah, I personally think so. As for parts availability, it depends on your local market. In the USA market, Dell and HP parts are easy to find. Other brands might be harder to find in USA but are more available in other markets.

      Intel Xeon E5-2696 V4 2.20GHz 22-Core LGA2011-3 are selling now on eBay for $177USD from China. DDR4 RDRAM is pretty low. So a $200-$400 workstation, two new 22c/44t processors with say 256GB of RAM, and some used enterprise-class SAS3 SSD or brand new retail level SSDs and a few big HDD, and for $1000USD to $1200USD you have a lot of VMs running on the 44c/88c using Proxmox or XCP-ng. Yes it takes some space and some power, so EU people cringe, but other than that, the price-performance as a server (not gaming system) is perfect. I keep finding them cheap in the USA.

    if you dont mind, when /if you install drives in the cages run a thermal test with the official way you install the fans and then try to reverse them both to blow through the front side. I bet that you ll have better temps. I have done that to every custom or not nas and had better results in every situation.

      @@ArtofServer Well it took some time until my 4 HGST (Dell labeled) 1.2Tb sas 6gps /10.000rpm arrive home but still the results once more proved me right. I have the sas drives installed on the icybox sas enclosure (pretty much like the model you used in the previous video with the unofficial way) . When I run a preclear script during the whole process, disks had an average temp between 47-50 celcius and they were idling at 44 which for me at least is to the hot side, I reverse both of the rear fans in order to blow air to the front of the tower. Now they are idling at 36 -38. During load goes to 44. Much if not just safer I think.

      @@dimitristsoutsouras2712 Drives and SSD and NVMe LOVE air flowing at a good rate over the unit. Pushing over them vs. pulling. I've always done this and found it helped a lot with temps.
