...when you 'seal' off the cylinder (deactivating the intake and exhaust and keeping them closed) you essentially neutralize them. Yea I think you're forgetting that the government is using a 3 letter organization to futtbuck us by forcing us to have "economy cars" not sure how the big hemi and the hellcat can get away with it but a lot of it has to do with weight and wheelbase.
My 2011 Charger is intermittently blowing blue smoke on the highway. It occurs when MDS deactivates (ECO annunciator goes OFF). In autostick, MDS is not active, and no smoke. I am guessing that oil is making its way past the rings of the dead cylinders, and is clinging to the cylinder walls. So when they re-activate BOOM . . blue smoke from burning oil. I am undergoing an oil consumption test now with the dealer. If they tell me this is normal, no more Chryslers.
..the only way to duplicate a sealed cylinder would to have a port large enough to allow the air to escape without resistance...if there was no head over the 'dead' cylinder would achieve this for example...
I have a 2012 GC 5.7 Hemi. Haven't had any oil issues but the other day I did see some smoke come out the exhaust when I stomped it. Also I don't get any better MPG's when the ECO comes on the vehicle just vibrates. Feels like it looses power but when I accelerate and it goes off it smooths out. Do I just put it in 6th gear and it should stay off?
jasonneal it's not smoke it is fuel making it past the cats. Look at a high performance car ferrari, bmw m series, audi s or rs when you step on the gas they have this "black smoke or cloud come out" this is the same thing that happens with mds when you really get onto it. If you feel a vibration when mds turns on and off you can switch to synthetic oil or just live with it. I have a gc 6.4srt and 5.7 ram once i went to synthetic it went away. If you go into manual gear limiter and set it to top gear 8,6,5 whatever the maximum gear is it will disable mds the only way to permanently remove it is tune it with a programmer.
So turning the solenoid ON collapses the lifter? or turning it OFF collapses the lifter? I'm asking because I am in the process of putting an MDS Engine into a non MDS vehicle. and wondering if I should pull the solenoids out or just leave them disconnected?
I'm currently having a misfire on cylinder 2, did a compression check and its all over the place. Any idea what it could be? I've been told it could be to do with the MDS and perhaps a new set of lifters..why on earth add this kind of system to a performance engine :( its costing me a ton of money already to eliminate what the problem could be...
Are these engine pretty reliable. Got a super great deal on a low mileage ram 1500 sport. It's my first Chrysler product as far as a trucks concerned. I've always drove ford f150 and toyota tundras so I want to try something different got tired of spending 48 to 50k on a truck. I bought this used and it had 12k miles on it so I really dont know enough about these motors weather they are reliable or not. All my friends told me that these are great trucks!
what year. early models lifters were trash and caused failure. id do a delete with cam.and lifters if you want reliability. if you want mpg then stick with it
Super reliable engines, if you have a 2009-2024 Ram Truck with the 5.7L HEMI, I would highly recommend upgrading your oil pump to a Hellcat/TRX Oil Pump to prevent oil starvation on the MDS lifters along with the rest of the engine, that way your constantly getting pressurized oil on all of the internal components at all times while driving And make sure to NOT EVER idle your HEMI for very long periods of time, this is where your lifters can fail. And make sure to ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be on time with your oil changes, and never go past 3,000 Miles, or else you will accelerate the failure.
no wonder they wipe the cams all the time. I bet those things wig out when you start hammering on the throttle. lifter goes flat at high speed? wipes cam lobe?
Cuando se produce la falla usualmente es con los buzos, botadores o taquetes inteligentes, o también ocurre con los solidos? Es decir, solo debería cambiar los colapsables para ahorras costos? Y que marca de buzos recomienda?
Unfortunately I have to replace my cam and lifters on my 2014 300s at 171,000 miles. Started ticking at 100,000. I won’t be buying another dodge I was told go full non mds cam and lifters so I bought the whole set up with the tuner gaskets and all. 1300 just for that and caught a deal for 1600 in labor it sucks. I wanted a challenger Rt or scat but I’m going to just pass goodbye dodge. Luckily I have my Chevy Malibu as a back up with 250,000 miles never had no serious motor issues with it other than a regular tune up. As a matter of fact all the cars I’ve owned from mustang to my infamous 2004 Pontiac gtp got well over 360,000 miles never had to tear down the top of the motor
Minutley, but no different than the rest of the Drivelineand oil pump. The NONfiring cylinder is kept in a vacuum on the upstroke (power and compression stages) so parasitic load is on the down-stroke only (Exhaust and intake Stage) . Every moving part in an engine contributes to parasitic load.
Energy produced, is repetitious to energy absorbed. The compression that the deactivated pistons produce, is the same energy used to push them back down hence creating a cushion effect. No compression drag when deactivated. If if there was, it's too minimal to effect efficiency.
@@danielorsborn9464 yes obviously every friction point is power loss. This question was 3 years ago lol, its not a minute loss of power, its a lot. to conserve minimize fuel consumption while keeping your speed, losing 4 cylinders wont add a small amount of drag, its a lot. 4 cylinders pushing momentum through 4 dead cylinders and a drivetrain vs 8 barely pushing the drivetrain.
@ matt I own a 2010 ram and dodge took care of the recall on mine and I dnt have to put oil in mine every idk what was up with your buddies truck but I dnt think dodge had anything to do with that
About as usefull as ford using start stop "technology" or chevy shutting off injectors on the highway. It may prolong your fuel capabilities but causes hell on internals. They need to get rid of all pushrods and go with overhead cams. You can do so much more with variable timing when the cames are on top and theres less parts that need to move leaving much less parasitic loads

....that doesn't work...I see what you are getting at, but you loose a lot of 'resistance' or imbalance from the cylinders that are 'working' creating vibration..also you would get noise of the cylinders venting...
Too bad the VVT camshafts are cheap. Truly feel sorry for those shelling out thousands out of warranty to have the top end torn apart around 100k miles.
Brother 2010 RAM did the same thing and they said it was normal. After the rear diff locked up do to a recall they did not want to fix he got rid of it and got a 2014 silverado. You guys might like mopar but there vehicles are some of the most unreliable on the market. BTW he was putting a court of oil weekly.
It's useless I disabled with my tuner and it's didn't change MPG. Have a 2013 Ram Sport 4WD with 8 speed it's a 5000Ib truck it needs all cylinders working not shutting down. If I was worried about mileage I wouldn't of bought. From day one average 23 MPG with or without MDS
Haha! *knock knock* I have a Chrysler 300C in the shop right now with a failed lifter on #6... 93k on the odo.. I also have a GMC Tahoe with a #7 failed lifter. Trying to sell a cam with no DOD(GM) or MDS(Mopar) and a tune. The idea looks good on paper but isn't worth shit in the real world.
Around 210,000 on my 07 Ram 1500 trx4. The truck runs fine but MDS is causing a light vibration and bogging. I ignored it for along time but now it'll blow a small amount of smoke when they engage all cylinders. I'm going to take it down and have a tuner shut it off. By the way I don't think I have a lifter issue yet, I can let it idle for awhile with not smoke.
Im replace the whole engine at 108,XXX miles! Always ran full synthetic oil. Hemi is trash. Now i have to drive a truck i cant trust to justify the cost
this system kills off these Hemis prematurely how can anyone support this crap.. If you're on of those that bitch about fuel economy get a fucking honda or Tacoma leave the V8s alone!
This is a really dumb and uneducated statement. HAVE YOU NOT HEARD OF THE MOPAR 340!!! Hemi's have changed both the racing and automotive industry COMPLETLEY with large impact. The only difference between it and any other v8 engine (ford, chevy, whoever the fuck) in design is the shape of the combustion chamber in the cylinder head.....hence "HEMIsphercial" combustion chamber. For fucks sake it got banned from NASCAR! I think it is hilarious that you say its a shit engine yet in your list of negative aspects you do not list any parts of Rotating assembly, cylinder Head or Valve Train......you know THE ACTUAL HEART OF THE ENGINE. I am now going to pick apart what you listed as negatives and further demonstrate how stupid this comment was. Exhaust manifold:The stock versions are specifically tailored to individual vehicles for their performance as STOCK engines so yes the diameter and style is a little old school and small BUT I can replace this with any bolt on cheap ass set of headers(long tubes) and BOOM problem solved with under 200$ aftermarket shit, ALSO this is a part of the EXHAUST SYSTEM not engine and even though it impacts air flow and back pressure you dont need it to run the engine whatsoever. Bolts: On this you are straight up incorrect, Dodge has very well manufactured and engineered Rod/Head Bolts & fasteners. Anybody can mistreat an engine and make it fail. The only time STOCK Bolts and fasteners need to be truly replaced is on an engine overhaul and for a performance engine(forced induction and whatnot). AND SHOULD ANY BREAK UNEXPECTEDLY you can buy a FULL ENGINE and transmission set of high performance Bolts and Fasteners for around 100$ Gasket: Are you fucking joking? Which gasket are we talking about here? Head Gasket? Valve cover Gasket?Fuel pump Gasket? Crankcase? Crankshaft? Distributor? because what youre saying is that they are all shit and shit is what they came from......Even though the hemi 345 (5.7) has been in use for close to 20 years now with little to no changes in design....you get my point. Gasket composition(not design) doesn't change between different vehicles and manufactures all that much in normal Daily Driver vehicles..... So shut the fuck up and actually have a good(educated) opinion before you randomly word vomit on a youtube video... Edit : "Hemi 345(5.7) has been in use for close to "(20)" years. Not 30 typo
BUYER BEWARE: this engine will have major failure with cam and lifters because the bearings in the roller lifters are not hardened . they are gonna fail and cause the lifter to twist and wipe out the lobes on the cam.

Phil Harris. the 5.7 2500 has no MDS. now that's a True V8. but the 6.4 2500 is MDS.
I like the MDS on my 2014 RAM 1500, but I see your point and you're right. There should be an option where you can enable/disable it as one pleases.
I have 2018 5.7 hemi 8 speed, if you gointo the settings and limit it to only 6 and also drive in tow/haul full time it nver comes on, I didnt even want new truck but lady blrw a stop sign n wrecked my 03...
16 pushrods or what
Hi one of my lister is making a noise is that why one of my spur plugs get wet i have a 2005 hemi dodge ram 1500 5.7
Your dose’t have mds only 2008 plus
....that doesn't work...I see what you are getting at, but you loose a lot of 'resistance' or imbalance from the cylinders that are 'working' creating vibration..also you would get noise of the cylinders venting...
Мыыыыыы
Fuel savings wasn't worth the $5,500 to replace the engine because of this system.
please educate yourself. This was a flaw on the Hemi period... doesnt' matter if it was 5.7 or not. Doesn't matter if it was MDS-equipped or not.
@@LarryReynolds591 the flaw was the crappy lifters. period
@@LarryReynolds591 If it was a "flaw" every Hemi would be effected, when in reality, 99% of the time it is MDS 5.7s
only 2 valves per cylinder. this should have v-tec or vanos.
This system is what blew my friends Chrysler not once, but twice.
Too bad the VVT camshafts are cheap.
Truly feel sorry for those shelling out thousands out of warranty to have the top end torn apart around 100k miles.
Yep I’m in the process now of a new cam and lifters after 171,000 miles on my 300s. I’m going full non mds cam lifters
I won’t be buying another
Looks broken already
Brother 2010 RAM did the same thing and they said it was normal. After the rear diff locked up do to a recall they did not want to fix he got rid of it and got a 2014 silverado. You guys might like mopar but there vehicles are some of the most unreliable on the market. BTW he was putting a court of oil weekly.
a court of oil in the injun
Como instalar los botadores de un dodge charger Rt 2006
Having the same cylinders cut on and off will give uneven ware and eventually scare a lobe.
Try putting in heavy weight oil and see what happens..... click click click... ... ...
It causes failure
Is there a point to this vid!?
It's useless I disabled with my tuner and it's didn't change MPG. Have a 2013 Ram Sport 4WD with 8 speed it's a 5000Ib truck it needs all cylinders working not shutting down. If I was worried about mileage I wouldn't of bought. From day one average 23 MPG with or without MDS
Still has those crappy lifters. They should last longer though since they're not being used.
charlietow Very true they should but I have no issues as of yet knock on wood! !!
Haha! *knock knock*
I have a Chrysler 300C in the shop right now with a failed lifter on #6... 93k on the odo.. I also have a GMC Tahoe with a #7 failed lifter. Trying to sell a cam with no DOD(GM) or MDS(Mopar) and a tune. The idea looks good on paper but isn't worth shit in the real world.
charlietow Have no issues as of yet with my tune but rest assured if I do trade before it gets screwed lol
Doesn't have the best firing pattern
is that the FLEXFUEL System?
this system kills off these Hemis prematurely how can anyone support this crap.. If you're on of those that bitch about fuel economy get a fucking honda or Tacoma leave the V8s alone!
Worse idea EVER? And the reason my family stop buying Dodge crap. Who the fuck buys a V8 for good mileage?
So this is why I have to add 1 quart of oil every 1,500 miles. Maybe I should buy a programmer and deactivate this POS system.
MDS is junk, the hemis are junk too. too many problems. hemi tick bad exhaust manifold/bolts/gaskets/etc...
+Handsome B Wonderful The Hemi was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2003 through 2007, and again in 2009
+bigdanwess ive owned two. they are actually ok engines except for the ticking and MDS problems. the one in my 05 jeep has 190k
Handsome B Wonderful if you do t like hemi why watch this video and waste our times writing stupidity azzclown
AND SHOULD ANY BREAK UNEXPECTEDLY you can buy a FULL ENGINE and transmission set of high performance Bolts and Fasteners for around 100$
Gasket: Are you fucking joking?
Not 30 typo
MDS sucks,GMs version sucks also. today you either get this bullshit or auto stop start garbage,...CAFE LAWS !
Pure junk
BUYER BEWARE: this engine will have major failure with cam and lifters because the bearings in the roller lifters are not hardened . they are gonna fail and cause the lifter to twist and wipe out the lobes on the cam.
