  • Bowiea volubilis, otherwise known as the climbing onion, is a caudiciform plant/succulent plant from Kenya and Cape Province. True to its name, the adult form of these guys look like onions!
    I have seen photos and videos of these weirdos, but I haven't seen a bowiea volubilis in the flesh, so I decided to plant some seeds to see if I could grow my own. They germinated easily enough, and now I have a full tray of climbing onions.

    Great video! I have been growing B. Volubilis from seed for a number of years and have sowed the seed under the potting mix, always get good germination success. I also have been germinating B. Gariepensis the same way, the seeds of this species is larger than B. Volubilis and also has good germination rates. I have sown a new batch of seeds and in some trays the seeds are on top and other tray I covered the seeds, will be an interesting experiment to see the germination rates. I noticed that B. Gariepensis is a larger and more robust bulb than B. Volubilis and is a winter growing variety, fascinating plants!

      thanks so much for watching! I haven't seen seeds for B. Gariepensis online, do you live in a location where you can get them easily? Jealous if you do. And yeah, I made the mistake of using cactus soil for the first time sowing these...I find cactus soil very rarely works for desert plants??

    Yooo these guys are so funky and all around interesting! I was introduced to them from the Summer Rayne Oakes video haha, you have a really good germination rate!! They almost kind of remind me of the corkscrew plant when they're young

    Nice video.
    So i am in the same step you show them in the video and wondering when should i remove them from the humidity glass(in my case) ? Now i am spraying each day and open the cover for a bit during the day and close it . Will be glad to know when to move them out from the glass :).

      hi there! I'd say when the little grass leaves are about 3 in /6 cm. They should be hearty enough at that point. you'll see the first leaves die and more will grow back. I'm still watering mine regularly when the dirt gets dry, usually once a week

    Now you have to wait a few years for them too start climbing and another few year for the too flower .... I'll have to wait for my plant to go dormant so i can collect the seeds and try your method as i wasn't getting a good germination rate like you are getting there .. By the way Haniya i left a message on he other video about some seeds that i've got if you want them ...

    I wish I started from seed… I just got two of these a month ago from a mature plant (hope that makes sense) and I think they’re doing okay because I have new growth on one. Both are just tiny 3/8 “ - Don’t know about seedling but mine and more mature ones like things on the drier side.

      @HaniyaRae  3 роки тому

      oh interesting about drier older plants. and yeah i understand you got some pups :) I did take th lid off today for the seedlings, so we'll see! I just know my first batch dried out quickly but i'm not sure if it was the soil or not

      @@HaniyaRae The leaves look like very small onions, right? When they turn yellow keep the plants dry for some month. The new grow will climb and form an onion.
